The Shannara Chronicles

(This review may contain spoilers).

Although I haven’t actually read any of the books in this series (though I have read other books by the same author), I was quite excited about seeing this television series when I originally saw it advertised.

I was quite disappointed that this series was only ten episodes long, but I really liked the fantasy elements that also held a little bit of an apocalyptic feel. It was interesting to see old, ruined buildings from the Age of Man and there was one particularly moving episode that showed an old, preserved high school.

I couldn’t really say who my favourite character in this series was, since I actually liked quite a few of them. I would have liked a bit more background on characters like Allannon, for instance, but it was really good to see how he interacted with the other characters like Will and Bandon.

I thought it was good to see so much of the world and the atmosphere of the series was really engaging.

I really didn’t like the love triangle in the series, but I did like Wil, Amberle and Eretria. I thought Eretria especially was a really complex character and although she was tough, I did feel quite a bit of sympathy for her.

It was good to be able to see the different types of beings and cultures in this series, although I was completely confused about how three different races had evolved and what the real history was of the Four Lands.

I would have liked a bit more detail about the history of the demons and how they came about. The Dagda Mor was extremely creepy, but apart from the Changeling, he was the only one who had any real development in the demon army.

I especially enjoyed seeing Arion and Ander and their conflicted relationship with their father. I felt that Ander was forced to grow up… but I did really feel that he was an interesting character and it was good to have some mystery surrounding his past… although I have to say, I wouldn’t have trusted the gnomes.

There were some really quite emotional scenes, even some regarding characters I really hated at first, such as Cephelo. I still strongly disliked him by the end of the series, though.

I liked that Wil grew and matured by the end of season one, even though he still kept his sweet nature.

I definitely plan to watch season two of this and I want to see the next season when it comes out. I will probably also buy this on DVD in the near future.

Title: Sleeper
Author: E.L. Loraine
Genre: Mystery, Urban, Contemporary Romance
Hosted by: Lady Amber’s PR
Blurb:

Jeremy is the guy Jillian thought didn’t exist. He’s smart, fun, handsome and employed. He has nightmares, but so does she. When Jeremy’s nightmare comes to Washington DC, he has to tell Jillian the truth; he’s spent his entire adult life looking for the homegrown terrorists hidden among us.

You’ll be on the edge of your seat as Jillian, Olivia and their friends frantically join to help him solve the mystery: what are the Sleepers planning and how can they stop them from destroying the country.

Interview

1) What originally inspired you to get into writing?

I always have loved to read fantasy, but I couldn’t find anything at the time that was different, not a knock off of something else that was popular. So I decided to try to write something. Now I write in several different genres.

2) Where did the idea for Sleeper come from?

I have had the idea in my head for several years, so when I started writing suspense it seemed the perfect fit for this story. It came from a combination of things. The news, history and my imagination.

3) Was there any particular character that you liked or felt able to relate to?

Jeremy comes from a friend I had growing up, so I kinda knew this guy and his family.

4) Was there any particular character that you disliked?

OH I hate the bad guys.

5) Were there any scenes in particular that were particularly challenging or easy to write?

It was a complicated plot to write and I had so many ends to tie up, but I love the challenge of that with these kinds of books. I don’t want the reader to know what’s going to happen. Who really is good or bad. Not for sure.

6) Have any of your characters been inspired by real people?

Yes often it’s parts of different people I have known in my life or family members, traits, things like that. It makes the characters more real and relatable I think.

7) Are there any particular authors or books that have inspired you?

I love the classics, and Anne Rice inspired me to write about vampires, which I have a passion for.

8) Do you have any advice/pearls of wisdom for budding writers?

If you want to write, you have to write. Even if it’s just a little every day. Be consistent with it and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

I grew up in a small northern Minnesotan town married my high school sweetheart, had two beautiful children and as soon as we could we moved to a warmer climate. I have worked with my husband building and decorating custom homes for years. After loving every kind of vampire book, movie and series I decided that I wanted to know more. I can write a book I thought, how hard can that be? Well…. But I stuck to it and finished my first book Royal Blood Chronicles Book One in August 2009. I now have six books in the series and am about to release book two of my new series Phantom Lives. My parents always told me that I could do anything that I wanted, work hard, study and do it right. I believe that and live that way every day.

The good Senator focused more attention to Jillian’s breasts than her face and Jeremy found his cavalier treatment of her angered him more than he wanted to admit.
It was obvious to Jeremy that Jillian had also noticed the Senator’s roving eyes, because her eyes narrowed fractionally, but she only smiled.
“I look forward to it.”
They watched him stride away to engage yet another young woman.
“How can you stand this?” Jeremy whispered and then took a large drink of champagne.
Jillian scanned the room. “It’s all part of the game.”
“Well then I officially hate this game. Think you’ll have to sleep with him to get what you want?” he said with a side glance.
Jillian grinned. “Probably,” she said and took a sip of her drink.
“If you do, you better get things in writing first. You’d most likely kill him in the process.”

Saltlands

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Having read the previous book in this series, I was glad to see that this one picked straight up where the previous one left off.

I liked learning a bit more about how the blood bond worked between Abel and Kane, but I was less than thrilled with the potential love triangle between her, Mikey and Kane. There were some things that made me cringe a bit while reading this book… in particular those scenes that seemed, to me, to be assault at the very least.

It was interesting to see more of Kane’s kind and I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the members Crestor had taken. I really didn’t like him at all and he gave me the creeps all through his scenes with Abel and Mikey.

I also liked learning more about the culture generally and even though I didn’t like the love triangle, it was good to learn more about Mikey’s character. I especially liked being able to see that he had a lot of depth to him… and that the problems with addiction were handled and dealt with quite well, even though I wasn’t sure exactly what drove him to drink alcohol.

I did find some of the scenes in this book hard to read and it definitely came across well that Abel was a survivor. I felt that she had as much depth in this book as the first one, even though I didn’t necessarily feel that she should have survived everything she was able to.

I would have liked to be able to see more of the relationship between Kane and Mikey, as all I saw was them being rivals for the same girl. I did also like seeing Ashlynn towards the end of the book and it was nice to see how she was coming more into her own.

Kane was a little scary at certain points in this book, but I did feel a lot of sympathy for him. I really didn’t like Elise… but I thought it was interesting to see how one of their kind was treated and there was a lot of tension at the beginning and towards the end of the book, even though the middle did drag a little.

I definitely intend to read the next book/s in this series at some point in the future.

X-Men: Apocalypse

X-Men Apocalypse

(This review may contain spoilers).

I went to see the triple showing of the X-Men movies with my sister… but having watched the previous two before, I was especially excited about this one.

I really enjoyed the opportunity to see many of the students as their younger selves and to get a bit of a glimpse of their lives outside of being part of the X-Men. While I did like most of the characters… I have to say, Kurt (Nightcrawler) was probably my favourite. He was from the cartoon I saw him in and being able to see him in this movie was just awesome.

While there was a lot of tension in this movie and I was very much on the edge of my seat for most of it, there was some really good balance with humour. It was cool to see the tie-ins with the other movies… but I did find it especially frustrating that there was a lot of contradiction, even though there was an amusing comment about the third film in a series being bad.

It did take me a while to realise just how much time had passed for the characters… but there were some intensely distressing scenes in this. It was particularly good to see the interactions between Charles and Erik… but while she wasn’t my favourite character, I did like seeing Raven more and the fact that, although morally ambiguous, she was still trying to do the right thing.

I liked Storm’s character and I think I would have liked to see a bit more of her history, though there were some quite good elements of foreshadowing. The first mutant was dangerously charismatic, though I wasn’t sure exactly why his four ‘disciples’ were so loyal to him.

It was really good to see Logan make an appearance, even knowing that he’d probably crop up again later. And there were a few link-ins to the original X-Men trilogy, even despite the contradictions.

There was a scene right after the end characters, so if you decide to go and watch it (and I recommend you do if you enjoy the X-Men in particular), make sure you stay for that. I definitely intend to buy this movie on DVD when it comes out.

Conjuror

(This review may contain spoilers).

This is the first time I’ve read a book by John and Carole Barrowman (or even by just one of them) and I have to say, I wasn’t disappointed.

The idea of being able to control things/do something through singing isn’t a new idea (I’m thinking primarily of Sirens), but I thought this was a very unique twist on the older idea. While I haven’t read the other books set in this world, I found this fairly easy to follow, but I was a bit confused about whether I was in the present or in Remy’s past towards the start of the book.

I did think that the opening scene did a good job of drawing me into the mystery surrounding the Conjurors, even though the bluebottles gave me mental images that left me shuddering.

I did find the main characters to be interesting and that they had a lot of depth… but I would have liked to see more of the background of the Grand Inquisitor and Don Grigori. In this first book in the series, I didn’t feel that they had a lot of depth past being bad guys. I was intrigued by the mention of Don Grigori having possibly have been human once.

I thought it was good to see so much tension throughout the book and it was especially good to have the opportunity to get to know Remy’s aunt and mother and something of their lineage. I was especially curious about Remy’s power to create food and the like and I wondered if it was creating something from nothing… or if the rules worked in a different way than what was immediately obvious.

It was also good to see some of the other abilities come into play, such as Matt and Em being able to travel using paintings, though I would have liked a bit more detail about how their abilities worked. I especially liked it when Em created a car for them to use… and the reaction when it was taken later on.

There were a few humorous moments that worked really well to lighten the story a bit and I especially liked seeing Matt’s interactions with Caravaggio. I was a bit confused about Zach and if he was signing because he was deaf (which was my original assumption), but I liked the glimpses I saw of his relationship with Em. However, I also liked that the sibling relationship was a really important aspect.

When I have more time and money, I definitely intend to read more books in this series and hopefully other books by these authors. This book was fast and easy to read and I’d like to see more of the characters in the future.

White Chicks

(This review may contain spoilers).

I have watched this film before, but it never fails to amuse me; and this time was no exception.

While there was a serious lack of observation on many of the characters’ parts in this movie, it was an entertaining one to watch. The two main characters were humorous and easily relate-able and I enjoyed seeing their interactions as well as the conflicts between them and the other agents.

While the very first scene was a bit over the top, it did do a good job of setting the tone for the rest of the movie. It was good to see Marcus’ relationship with his wife, although I did feel she came across as very high-maintenance.

While some of the jokes were crude and also a little much, it was amusing to see two grown men trying to pretend to be young women. I found it especially funny seeing them trying to act like they knew people Brittany and Tiffany did. At the same time, it was cool to see that they did form friendships and there were some really sweet moments between them and the three girls.

I did have a lot of sympathy for Marcus, as I felt he was not only dragged into bad situations by Kevin, but he was also left to deal with Latrell on his own. Kevin really should have been a better brother/partner to him.

It was good to see that there was quite a bit of focus on Marcus and Kevin trying to solve the case and I thought, even with the humour, at least Marcus was trying to stay on track. There were quite a few moments where I cringed in sympathy with him.

I did think there were some good elements of foreshadowing, in particular with Marcus being lactose-intolerant. And the fashion show towards the end of the movie was especially amusing.

All in all, this film was one I would definitely watch again, having already watched it several times through. It is rude in places, but if you like crude humour and an involving storyline, I would recommend giving this a try.

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

This was, I have to say, a book I had high expectations of that turned out to be a disappointment.

The very first scene was one that started out with a lot of potential, but even by the last quarter of the book, I still had no real idea what the main plot was supposed to be. And the last quarter culminated in an ending that left a very bad taste in my mouth.

I really struggled to form any kind of emotional connection to Jacob. I felt that there was far too much telling rather than showing going on, particularly when it came to his wife and son. They were bland and literally only seemed to appear when they were relevant to Jacob at the time. I had no idea what he thought of them and even when they died, I couldn’t believe that Jacob really grieved for them.

Jacob’s character seemed to go through no real change or evolution. Joseph ben Matthias was actually someone who seemed to go on a better journey than Jacob. I would have preferred seeing him as the main character, as his own struggles made him a more interesting person.

This book read very much like a book of facts, rather than an intriguing historical fiction book. There was too much in the way of information dumping and I lost a lot of my sympathy for Jacob with certain actions he took. What did he care about? Who did he care about? By the end of the book, he’d supposedly lost his faith, but I didn’t feel he really had any to begin with.

I felt this novel suffered from too much exposition and lack of character development. While there was obvious research put into this book, I could have done without having every little bit clubbed over my head.

While the ending could have been an interesting theory, I felt the cat had been let out of the bag far too early on and that it really didn’t add anything to a book I struggled to get through. I feel it might be of interest to conspiracy theorists… but on a personal level, as a reader, it didn’t live up to my expectations and fell very short.

Eurovision 2016

Eurovision2016

Although I was quite tired the day this was showing, I did manage to focus on actually watching it. While I didn’t think Australia should have been the only non-European country able to enter (I feel other countries should be invited as well), the program was still entertaining to watch.

I didn’t really have any favourite songs in this Eurovision. Quite a lot of the songs made me think of others I’d heard… I felt some of the melodies weren’t very unique and a lot of them didn’t really stick in my mind. I probably wouldn’t listen to them again.

There were some songs that made good use of the screens, in particular Russia’s. There were some really beautiful images on the screens, as well as really cool effects… such as water rippling.

Although I didn’t think the United Kingdom’s song was terribly unique, I was impressed by the fact there were more points awarded than the UK’s got in previous years. However, I do feel it’s unfair that certain countries (and, yes, including mine) get automatic placements in the song contest.

I was quite impressed with how short the Eurovision was this year, considering how long the start can go on for. The voting from the jurors worked well… but I thought the telephone voting was handled really poorly. While I could understand wanting to extend the suspense, I think it could have been done without picking on the countries with the least amounts of votes.

While I did appreciate the emotion in Ukraine’s song, I couldn’t really say I thought they deserved to win. While they weren’t bad, I found the song didn’t have anything to make it stand out to me personally.

It was good to see the previous year’s winner perform, but I don’t like the new combination of songs. I would have much preferred to have the whole song performed.

Despite the somewhat bland nature of many of the songs, I did enjoy watching the Eurovision and intend to watch it again next year… but I honestly feel it shouldn’t just be open to one country outside of Europe. Every country should be able to compete and it should be a Worldvision.

“Do you want to grab a seat for a few minutes?” he asked.
I looked around and the place was mostly deserted. “Sure.” We settled in two comfortable padded chairs. “For the record, I don’t want to do any of the things Jillian has planned.”
He smiled. “How else do you plan to prove your point?”
“My point will be easily proven. Love doesn’t exist.” I stared at his lips. The bottom was slightly plumper than the top. His blue dress shirt was rolled to the elbows. And his forearms were toned. Damn it. Why should men have forearms like that? Why? They flexed when he raised his cup to his lips, and then flexed again when he sat it back onto the table.
“Why would any woman want that to be true?” he challenged, one brow arching up.
“I don’t want it to be true, it just is.”
His eyes narrowed and he crossed his arms over his chest. “How do you know? Forget the assignment, forget proving a hypothesis and this damn paper. How do you know? Why do you think that?”
I swallowed. “Because if I’ve ever felt it, I don’t remember it.” His brows furrowed and he parted his lips to say something, but never did. What could anyone say to that?

Spark

by Holly Schindler

Publisher: HarperTeen

Release Date: May 17th 2016

Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Fantasy, Magic, Realism

Rate: 4 out of 5 stars

Synopsis:

The local Avery Theater was just a run-down building to Quin—until her mother told her the tragic love story of Nick and Emma that played out on the theater’s stage all those years ago. Quin is convinced it’s the perfect story to rewrite for her drama class, but when she goes searching for more information, she makes a startling discovery—the Avery is rapidly regaining its former splendor and setting the stage for her classmates Dylan and Cass to relive Nick and Emma’s romance. Quin can see the spark between them, but it’s up to her to make sure her friends—and the Avery—can both be saved this time around.

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).
I found this book really quick and easy to read. It was a fairly original idea and I found Quin to be a character I could easily relate to and empathise with, especially due to her love of reading and her writing ability.

I thought it was good to see the very first scene in the Avery at the beginning, which gave me some insight into the history of the theatre… while also leaving me with a lot of questions to be answered through the course of the book.

While some of the secondary characters weren’t as well-developed as they could have been, I did like Cass and Dylan. It was interesting to see that, although Quin was an important character in the book, she wasn’t actually a part of the star-crossed lovers story.

I did think that it was good to see the parallels between Emma and Nick in the past and Cass and Dylan in the present, though I couldn’t have said that the two couples shared much in the way of similarity. It was good to see elements of magic in the Avery… and I liked seeing how the Avery had once been considered a living thing.

I especially liked seeing the comparisons between Trouble and Mrs. Drewery. I liked the child and it was good to know how Quin’s mother had told her the story of the history of the Avery.

I did feel that there were a lot more parts of the story that could have been told, since there were a lot of other characters rather than just the main ones. It was interesting to see how the journal played a big part in it all… but I would have really liked to see Cass and Quin talk more to each other about what was going on. It would have been good to see them sharing a bit more and seeing more of the romance developing, not just in sneaky moments Quin observed the two of them in.

I’d be interested in reading more books by this author in the future. I did enjoy this and I liked the storyline and the main characters. I would recommend this as a book that was sweet and entertaining to read.

Character Interview With Quin

1) What is your biggest dream?

To be a writer. It’s a secret dream, though. I write stories and hide them away in the closet in my room. The only person who’s ever seen something I’ve written is my mom—who’s also the drama teacher at my high school.

2) What is your greatest fear?

To share my work with someone. No—actually, it’s that I’d show my writing to someone, and they’d laugh. Or not like it. I mean, that’s far worse than being teased because of what you look like, isn’t it? To invite someone into your innermost thoughts, and have someone roll their eyes? I don’t know if I’d be able to take that.

3) Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time?

You know, at the beginning of my story, I just thought I was one of the bland crayons in the box. And that I’d probably go on that way. At the end of my story, though, I had acquired some pretty big plans for myself. I see myself putting my work out there under spotlights.

4) What do you personally believe?

I believe in things that can’t be logically explained. I believe in magic. I believe that the final sentence of a sad story can still be rewritten. And I’ve even come to believe that I have the power—and the talent—to do the rewriting.

5) What’s your favourite pastime?

Writing. Reading. I have so many books—and I just can’t bring myself to throw them away. I’ve actually stacked them to create furniture in my room!

6) What’s your favourite place to go when you’re happy, sad, overwhelmed, etc.?

The Avery Theater. It’s right across the street from where I live on the square of Verona, Missouri. It’s been closed since the ‘40s. But something’s happening there. The theater’s magical. It’s coming back to life. I know it is. And I can’t stay away. I go there at night—sneak right inside, and I see things there. Wild things. Magical things.
