Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Out of the Shadows

(This review may contain spoilers).

Although it didn’t really stick well in my mind, I did actually quite enjoy the first film and I was quite eager to see this one… even though, while watching, I felt that a lot of the conflicts from the first movie were recycled.

While I did watch the cartoon series of TMNT as a child, I only really remember bits and pieces of it and the original movies. I do like the look of the turtles and it was cool to see that each of their different personalities came through well.

I enjoyed seeing Casey Jones, even though I wasn’t sure whether I should be taking his character seriously or not. The use of the hockey stick/mask was pretty cool… and I did have a bit of a fangirl moment of, ‘I’ve met him!’ about the actor, Stephen Amell.

In this movie, I didn’t find Shredder quite as creepy, as he spent most of the movie unmasked. I would have liked to see a bit more about how the ooze worked… and while I’m sure that wasn’t its official name, it was kind of funny to hear the characters all refer to it the same way.

Despite the arrangement the turtles had with Vernon, I really didn’t like him through most of the movie and I especially felt sorry for Mike, as he came across as the youngest and the one who most wanted to fit in. Out of all of the turtles, I felt that he (and Raph, to a certain extent) was the one who didn’t feel like he fit in.

There was a lot of humour in this movie and I also liked that there was a lot of tension. I would have perhaps wanted to see more of the turtles’ relationship with Splinter, but it was good to see him appear, however briefly.

I did kind of see some of the things happening towards the end, especially given what the bad guys are usually like. And there was little to no depth to the villains… even though Rocksteady and Bebop did provide some elements of comic relief.

I’m not sure I’d buy this movie on DVD, even though I did enjoy watching it. If there’s another movie in the series, though, I probably will see it.

COL_BILL_TEMPLATE_21

(This review may contain spoilers).

When I saw this movie advertised, I was immediately interested in watching it. While I don’t really understand much about stocks and stock prices, I did find this movie to be really entertaining to watch.

It was good to see there was a stark contrast between the feel of the show at the beginning of the movie and how the show had developed by the end of the movie.

Even though Kyle made some appallingly bad choices, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him and it was good to see how he and Lee connected through the course of the movie.

I did find myself rolling my eyes a bit at how Patty seemed much more concerned about the ratings and less so about the safety of the people working in the studio, at least at first.

I found myself on the edge of my seat for most of the movie and it was good there was so much tension in the movie.

It was good to learn more about both Lee and Kyle, along with the action going on. It was also interesting to see the reactions of other people watching what was happening in cafes and bars around the town.

I didn’t like Diane’s character very much at first to begin with, but as the movie went on, she did grow on me quite a bit and I thought it was good to see how she was working to find out what was really happening as well.

While there wasn’t a lot of background on some of the more minor characters, I did find that the main ones were developed enough to make me care about what was going to happen to them. I didn’t think much of Arlene, even though she did give Lee and Kyle something to bond over.

The ending of the movie wasn’t a surprise, but I was still on the edge of my seat watching and this movie is probably one I’d want to watch again in the future.

Renegade

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

It was good to see this book picked up where the previous one left off. I liked seeing the effects that Silver’s actions had on the outside world, but also more of the characters with her. Faith, in particular, came across as really strong… though I felt she had a lot of human qualities to her. I actually liked her a lot more than Silver and the others… although the rest of the group were intriguing characters as well.

I really didn’t like the hints of a love triangle that turned into a full-fledged one by the end of the book and I did feel like it was in danger of taking over the storyline. At the same time, even though it was good to see something more of the surrounding area and what was going on there, I did feel that the Kingsmen just kept cropping up in large numbers. I wasn’t sure how many of them there were in total, but they weren’t really individual and kind of put me in mind of a hive mind.

It was good that there was a lot of tension in this book and it didn’t really let up. I did feel that a lot of the secondary characters in Silver’s group, particularly the boys, weren’t really well-developed. While I could differentiate between most of the girls (and it was nice to see Pietra a bit more), I didn’t feel like enough time was spent on allowing me to get to know the secondary male characters.

While I did see one of the things coming, it was still pretty awful to read about and I ended up feeling a lot more sympathy for the person involved. While I wasn’t sure that, realistically, Silver should have been able to get away with everything she did, it was good to see that she was resourceful and kept on fighting, even though I thought the rebels were taking the easy way out. While it made sense that they weren’t talking to each other and weren’t using their full/real names… I did question what exactly they were doing, considering Silver was more active than they proved to be.

I did think it was good to see the group forced to live off the land, even though I would have liked to see them face more problems (such as toilets… and the girls’ time of the month). On a normal level, I could relate to the choices Silver made… but I did feel that she didn’t necessarily act in anyone’s best interest and there was a scene towards the end of the book that really jarred me.

Having the third and final book on my Kindle, I am looking forward to reading it, as I do want to find out what will happen to the characters next, even though I’m much less curious about the love triangle.

Alice Through The Looking Glass

Alice Through The Looking Glass

(This review may contain spoilers).

In the first Tim Burton movie, Alice didn’t really stick strongly in my mind as a character, but it was nice to see a return to Wonderland and the other characters from the first movie… even though this film bore very little resemblance to what I remembered of the book.

I particularly liked being able to see more of the pasts of the different characters. There were some quite obvious problems in Wonderland, but I found it really easy to empathise with Alice and her trying to be independent at a time when women weren’t able to take on the same jobs as men… even though I didn’t realise, at first, that the opening scene wasn’t a fantasy.

I really didn’t like Hamish. His attitude really set me on edge and I thought Alice showed a great deal of resentment dealing with him.

There were a couple of instances of vertigo that I felt were quite effective and I was on the edge of my seat a bit during some of the movie.

I really liked the Dormouse, who was probably my favourite. But I really did like the scene when the Mad Hatter and the others at the tea party were making all of the puns about Time.

I did find Time to be a really intriguing character and it was interesting to see what his home was like. I found him a lot more sympathetic than I was expecting… and Alice a lot more headstrong, even though there wouldn’t have been much of a movie if she hadn’t been.

I didn’t really feel there was a lot in the way of fantastical nonsense, but the serious parts of the movie did work particularly well… and there were times I really felt sorry for the Mad Hatter. And I did feel some sympathy for the Queen of Hearts, even though I really didn’t want to.

I don’t think I’d watch this movie again in the near future, but I did enjoy seeing it today. And it was cool to see Richard Armitage have a couple of cameos.

Golem

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

While I was originally drawn to this comic book because of the cover and the blurb, I did actually find this quite hard to follow. I felt that I was only seeing part of the story and that I’d missed the whole world before the events of the plot took place.

While there were some good moments of tension in this comic book, I found there was a lack of emotional connection to any of the characters. I had, in fact, missed quite a few of the apparent twists, due to a lack of different characters being shown enough that I could differentiate them from each other.

I thought that the pain ray was an interesting idea, but I really had no idea of how it worked, or how one character seemed immune to it. According to the explanation at the end, there were characters whose roles corresponded to the zodiac signs… but I think that would have been better shown by expanding the world and the characters and making more than just one comic book. When I had to leave off reading, I wasn’t able to seamlessly slip back into the world and it was harder to pick up.

There were some nice artistic styles, though I felt there were a few random portraits that could have been placed in at the end, rather than having the more Gothic feel slap in the middle of the storyline.

I didn’t feel there was much in the way of foreshadowing and by the end of the book, I really didn’t understand what had happened. The storyline had had a lot of potential, but I felt that all fell by the wayside. While I do think there should be a sequel to this comic book, I don’t think it would be one I personally would read unless it was expanded upon. Even when the characters were hurt, I didn’t know enough about them to care… and I honestly felt that the profiles at the end shouldn’t have been necessary if the characters themselves had been developed better. In this instance, I felt the comic book suffered from too many characters.

Reckoning

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I did find this book to be quite an intriguing read. Although I wasn’t especially keen on Silver having something that made her stand out so much, since it raised something of a red flag to me, I was able to connect emotionally to her as a character and I did care about what was happening to her.

While it was good to get bits and pieces of the world Silver and the other characters were a part of, I felt that many of the secondary characters… in particular quite a few of the fellow Offerings… weren’t really expanded or developed. I would have liked to know more than just a few of them, as I didn’t actually care about some of them enough that, when something happened, it didn’t affect me emotionally.

It was interesting to get some details of life in the castle and how everyone had to keep their heads down. The entire time in the castle put me completely on edge… but given there was very little detail about the King before Silver and the other characters went to the castle, I didn’t find his behaviour as a shock due to having envisioned him as a completely different person to who it turned out he was.

I actually found Rush to be quite an interesting character and I would have liked to see more of him… as well as the other Offerings. I was a bit disappointed that so much time was glossed over, as I didn’t get a chance to learn all that much about Imrin… or believe in the feelings the two of them apparently had for each other.

There were a lot of good elements of tension and I did feel a lot of sympathy for the Offerings. I did feel there were some links to the Hunger Games… but although there were scenes that reminded me of those books, I thought that the storyline was unique enough to keep me reading throughout and although I couldn’t form emotional connections to most of the secondary characters, it was easy to care about Silver… and what might happen to her family while she’s forced to live in the castle.

I do have the second and third books on my Kindle… which is good, because I’m looking forward to reading to the end and finding out what will happen to the characters.

Cargo (The Reservation Trilogy, #1)

by Jen Castleberry

Release Date: January 17th 2016

Genre: Young Adult

Rate: 3 out of 5 stars

Synopsis:
The earth has been reduced to a singular continent, governed by extra-terrestrials, collapsed by nuclear weapons residue and wracked with radiation sickness. Only one viable territory remains, and access there is restricted by a mysterious selection process. Everyone hopes to be chosen for transport. Everyone but Cass.
Seventeen year old Cassidy Hartinger has spent the past eleven years living in a government-maintained bunker. She should be thrilled when a handsome transporter arrives to take her to the Reservation. So why does she feel like he’s dragging her, kicking and screaming, straight into the anti-paradise?
Faced with gun-wielding survivalists and elemental catastrophes, will Cass make it more than two steps out of the bunker? Will her journey to peace and safety in the Reservation turn out to be the most perilous thing she’s encountered so far?

Fast-paced action and a tumultuous teenage romance will keep readers begging for more installments of The Reservation Trilogy!

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

When I saw the blurb for this book originally, I found myself quite intrigued… but I did find it a bit hard to get through the prologue. I felt it could have been expanded upon, to give me a better idea of what the world was like.

Once Cassidy left the bunker with Nathan, there was more in the way of tension. While I was kind of confused about why Nars was following them, due to his actions later on, it was good to see some elements of tension… and I especially liked the fact that Cassidy didn’t forget about her home and her friends, even though I did think that Nars seemed to forget about it all very quickly… and I found him much harder to understand than Cassidy.

I thought it was interesting to see a character who didn’t want to go to the Reservation as the main character in the book and to see that the life she led was a bit more sheltered… even though I wondered if she’d ever actually seen the church itself. I thought it was good to see how little she wanted to go to the Reservation… though I was confused about why it was such a big deal. I didn’t actually get to read much about what the Reservation seemed to be… and although Cassidy talked about others in the convent wanting to go there, I saw very little evidence of that.

I did like that, although she was stubborn and a bit of a spitfire, Cassidy wasn’t protected from the consequences of her actions, although I was a bit surprised that there was no attempt made to clean her infected hands. There were some good elements of tension in this book and I did like some of the descriptions, especially the ones set in the desert. It was interesting to see the differences in the place they ended up in… but I would have liked to see a bit more depth surrounding the secondary characters who lived there. And just what the society/culture was like.

I wasn’t especially keen on the budding relationship between Cassidy and Nathan, especially since I felt that Nathan didn’t really seem to care about Cassidy and I didn’t get the impression she really liked him. I didn’t think the epilogue fit… even though it did end on something of an intriguing cliffhanger.

I’m torn about whether I’d read the next books in this trilogy, since there was a lot that was intriguing about the world and the characters… I just felt that it was far too short and could have done with being expanded upon and allowing me to see more of the world and get to know more of the characters.
