Captive's Kiss

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I was really happy to get the opportunity to read this novella and have the chance to see the world and the characters again… though I particularly liked being able to see another group of Watchers.

I thought it was particularly interesting to see something of the culture of the Lash demons, though I was a bit confused about how everything worked with them going into heat… or that’s what it seemed like, anyway. While there was an element of love at first sight, I really liked the relationship that grew between Saige and Tanner and it was good to learn bits and pieces of Saige’s past… though I was a bit disappointed not to learn very much of Tanner’s past.

While this book was a novella, I did like being able to see some of the interactions between Tanner and his fellow Watchers. I would have liked to see a bit more of Arawn and his team of Watchers, as well as the Solsti, but I did especially like being able to see more and different demons.

I found Saige really easy to empathise with and I felt a lot of sympathy for her as I got to know more about her history and what she was forced to do. While I would have liked to see more depth to the villains, instead of a group of bad guys, I thought that the hints of mystery with the disappeared demons a really interesting one. It was really good to see that Tanner wasn’t willing to let things go and just assume that Saige was acting of her own volition.

I liked seeing Saige’s relationship with her brother and I would have liked to see more of their interactions. It was good to know what the limitations to Saige’s abilities were… and I also especially liked the fact that Tanner didn’t try to push her into anything, even though they had had some erotic interactions at the beginning.

While the threat in this book wasn’t as worldwide as some of the others, there was real danger that made me care about the characters and the situation. I’d definitely like to see more of the world and the characters in the future.

Thor Dueling With Giants

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

While Thor has been a long-time favourite of mine since the movie, I didn’t feel that this book was as good as the blurb had implied.

I liked the opportunity to see something of Thor and Loki as children, though it was a bit sad to see how early on Loki’s resentment of Thor began… though to be honest, I didn’t feel that Thor acted very brotherly towards Loki. While they referred to each other as such, I didn’t feel that there was much sincerity on either side.

While it was good to have the opportunity to learn more about Frigga’s background, I felt there was too much summarising of the history between the characters. Volstagg’s defeat of the trolls towards the beginning made me laugh… and it provided some good relieving of tension.

I really liked the fact that, although the book was based on Marvel’s Thor, there was a lot involving the world tree and different Norse myths, though I didn’t really feel like Loki came across as a very complex villain. I was a bit disappointed not to see more of his plans and that he only played a very small part in the whole thing. Plus, I felt that his resentment of Thor was just that… without any of the complexities in being raised as a brother to someone. I did feel the movies did a good job in showing that complicated relationship between them.

I did really like seeing Frigga acting capably and being able to defend herself. I enjoyed seeing her work her magic in an offensive way… but I was disappointed that Gudrun didn’t play a big part in that, either, and there seemed to be an element of ‘the woman stays at home with the children’ in the narration.

I did especially like seeing the final short story and something of how Sif began training to be a warrior. I liked that Thor was one of the only ones who wanted to accept her… and I especially liked how gracious Fandral ended up being. I would have liked to see this book expanded upon and less information dumping, but it was entertaining to read.

Guardians of the Galaxy Castaways

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I found this book a really entertaining one to read. While it seemed to start partway through a plot, I thought that the opening scene did a good job of establishing the characters and something of the relationships between them. It was good to see the tensions between the group… and the fact that, even though they were allies (and even friends), there were still some very real conflicts between them. While it was disheartening to see the group split up, there didn’t seem any other way to resolve things.

I particularly liked seeing the friendship between Rocket and Groot and how it was easy to see what Groot was really saying, beneath the only three words he could actually say.

While it was easy to see that Quill regretted what had happened, I found it difficult to see what was so different about this time… while it might have been one of the only times they’d been stranded on a planet, I couldn’t imagine it was the first time Quill had got them into awkward situations.

I did really like the fact that I could tell the Guardians were all conflicted characters… even Quill, beneath the exterior of a rogue. While I would have liked to see something of how Quill fought his way to become the Duke’s righthand man, it was good to see that his skills didn’t make him perfect… and I did care about his safety while he was battling. And the first scene was difficult to read, with how alone he seemed to feel.

I liked the opportunity to see more of the planet and the different races that peopled it. It was also good to see how the different crew members found temporary places… but I especially liked that the call of friendship was still strong enough to bring them all together.

I did think there was a lot of buildup and there was a lot of tension during the battle, but it was good to see more of the natives able to stand up for themselves. And I liked being able to get some answers about the history of the planet and seeing the Guardians work together.

I probably would read more book/s about the Guardians of the Galaxy in the future, whether comics or novels.

Aliens Vs. Vampirella

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

While I haven’t heard of Vampirella, I have seen most of the movies in the Alien franchise. It was an interesting take, to see a vampire having to deal with the devastation caused by the aliens.

I would have liked to see a bit more background to Vampirella and perhaps something of the background of the characters on Mars. I would have liked to see a bit more in the way of character interactions, since even though the horror elements were good, there was too much in the way of characters I didn’t really care about getting hurt or killed.

It was interesting to see the prejudices people had towards Vampirella’s kind. I was also intrigued by the ancient civilisation that was found… and it was even more interesting that they had the chance to meet one of the members; though I didn’t really much like him at first. I was a bit thrown by how he kept on referring to humans as cattle… but that did make sense, as the attitudes of his kind were clearly very different to how Vampirella viewed humans.

I was a bit confused by the random garden area that the aliens were able to attack and the characters who had been killed. It was good to see Vampirella able to grow her own wings and I thought they looked really pretty. I also thought that it was good she had weaknesses and that she couldn’t just fight; she had to run and shelter. Even though it might have been cool to see an alien and a vampire battle it out, I appreciated the fact that it was as realistic as it could be, considering the supernatural/science fiction elements.

I liked the artwork and I felt the aliens’ scary appearance were portrayed particularly well. I knew what was coming several times, which made me tense up… especially in the scene with the face-huggers.

There were some nice human elements and while I didn’t get to know the secondary characters well, I had little trouble with the main characters. I’d be interested in seeing more of Vampirella in other comics.

Black Magick

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

When I saw the cover and blurb for this comic book, I was immediately intrigued, considering I enjoy reading books with modern-day paranormal aspects to them. And I like comic books, too, so this was particularly good.

Although the plot of having a police officer involved in paranormal crimes wasn’t a unique one, I did think that having a witch as the police officer was an intriguing idea. And although I would have liked to know a bit more of Rowan’s background, I did like the fact she was a tough person and I had the impression she could take care of herself.

I was a bit confused about what the rules of the world were and I would have liked some more detail about who knew about Rowan’s ‘other’ life and who didn’t. For instance, it seemed like at least one of her fellow officers knew… but her partner didn’t.

I thought it was interesting to see something of Rowan’s friendship with the leader (priestess?) of her coven, but I didn’t see much in the way of conflict between her two lives. I did find it interesting to see something of how her magic worked, but I would have liked to get a bit more detail about how her and the priestess were different to Wiccans. I also would have liked to see a bit more of the other Coven members.

There was a lot of tension in this comic, especially towards the end… which was really quite creepy, even though I didn’t really know what was going on. And I wasn’t really sure how Rowan had known what was going on. I kind of felt very much like I’d been thrown into the middle of a storyline… and because it didn’t really let up, I wasn’t given much of a chance to get to know the background and characters well enough to empathise with them. But I did really like the fact that there were strong female characters. And it was pretty cool to see the priestess interacting with someone from the church.

I’d like to get a bit more background to this world… but I’d probably read other comics in this series in the future.

DC Graphic Novel Collection: Batman and Son

DC Comics Graphic Novel Collection Batman and Son

(This review may contain spoilers).

It was especially intriguing to see Batman realise he had a son… and considering he had a playboy reputation, I was a little surprised he didn’t have more illegitimate children.

I thought it was particularly interesting to see how Batman was interacting with Tim. I really didn’t like Damien, even though I did feel a bit of sympathy for him and I would have liked the opportunity to see a bit more of his past and interactions with his mother and parents.

I did feel sorry for Tim at points in this book and I thought that Batman didn’t seem to act like much of a guardian towards him. I would have liked to see a bit more of Tim and Damien’s interactions… without Damien trying to kill everyone close to Batman, even though it was somewhat sad to see how desperate he was to prove himself to his father. However, I wasn’t sure if he really wanted to help Batman… even though I would have really liked to see him spend more time with Batman and the others and learn a different way of life. It was disappointing that Batman didn’t really say much to him about hurting Tim… almost like Bruce didn’t think Damien was able to be saved.

I was intrigued by the differences between Talia in the first set of comics and her personality in the final one. It was interesting to see her introduction… but she seemed like a much tamer person in her first appearance. I would have liked to see if that was just because different writers changed her… or if she changed due to things that happened. It would have been good to see something of her motivations, though.

I thought that there was a lot of tension in the first set of comics, but not as much in the second comic. I did find the storyline easy to follow and it was really good to see Bruce interacting with Alfred and having to act to make sure his reputation remained intact. While there wasn’t a lot in the way of the contradictions in Bruce’s personality, there was enough that I was very interested in seeing the different aspects of his personality.

DC Graphic Novel Collection: Tower of Babel

DC Comics Graphic Novel Collection Tower of Babel

(This review may contain spoilers).

I don’t really remember at what point I was introduced to Batman. I vividly remember watching an older film that had Catwoman and the Penguin in it, but I couldn’t pinpoint exactly when I became aware of the Caped Crusader.

This wasn’t the first comic book in the collection, but it was the one I read first, due to the blurb. I was very intrigued by the potential issues of trust and betrayal in the mains set of comics.

It was very interesting to see Batman unable to trust even those who were supposed to be his allies. I did feel a bit of sympathy for him, as I think not being able to trust is a lonely existence… but even if he had reasons for keeping files on the JLA, I didn’t think he should have gone as far as he did.

It was heartbreaking to see how badly affected the members of the JLA were by the traps utilised against them. While Superman was the only other hero I knew particularly well, I thought that the traps showed their weaknesses really well… and while I was confused about some of the switches between the characters and who was grouped with who, I thought this was a really good way to allow me to get to know some of the members of the JLA.

Even though I didn’t know all of the members that well, it was good that I was able to get some details about them in the first set of comics, at least. I liked being able to learn things about the characters, such as the Green Lantern being really artistic… and it was awful to have him lose his sight. And I couldn’t help feeling sympathy for Aqua Man, as even though they all went through awful things, forcing Aqua Man to fear what he needed to survive.

The most awful thing to see was Superman’s weakness, even though I wasn’t completely sure how it had affected him without outright killing him. And it was interesting to see how Wonder Woman’s weakness seemed to be as much about her being unable to surrender. But I could definitely understand why they took a vote at the end of the comic.

The second set of comics were intriguing, though they were very different in style. It was good to see the JLA having to battle alongside each other against an early threat.

The Trees

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Having read another book by this same author, I was happy to have won a copy of this book. I thought the concept was a really intriguing one and I also really liked the front cover.

I’ve read a lot of apocalyptic-themed books, but I thought this one was an original concept. I wasn’t especially keen on Adrien to begin with, but I did think that a lot of his actions and reactions made sense. He might not have been a conventional hero, but he was a realistic character.

I liked seeing how Hannah was affected by the trees to start with and how her views seemed to change and evolve through the course of the book. I thought it was good to see her affected by actions she’d taken and that she had to struggle with the consequences. However, there were more than a few characters who I found it difficult to understand their motivation, even when they explained it.

I wasn’t especially sold on much of the romance, but that was also because many of the interactions between the characters were glossed over, or summarised in the narration. However, I did find the emotions between Seb and Hiroko more believable than Hannah and Eoin. The progression between the former seemed more natural than the latter.

I thought it was good to see the different reactions people had to the devastation caused by the trees. It was interesting to see how some people came to believe they were above any kind of morals and that the lack of police meant they didn’t have to obey any ethical law.

I thought that the concept of the Whisperers was an intriguing one and it was interesting to see how different people were affected by seeing them and the tree. However, by the end of the book, I was a bit disappointed there weren’t many clear answers. I would have liked to know why.

There was a lot of tension in this book, but there were different types. Even though it dragged a little in places, I didn’t really find myself getting bored and I enjoyed being able to learn more about the history of the characters.

Particularly towards the end of the book, I noticed a lot of glossing over of important events. I would have liked to see those expanded upon a bit.

While I couldn’t say I had a favourite character, I did like Hiroko a lot more than the others, even if I did feel her priorities were a bit skewed. And if there’s a sequel to this book, I’d like to see more of her and Seb’s journey, as I thought Seb’s evolution as a character was particularly interesting.

Independence Day: Resurgence

Independence Day Resurgence

(This review may contain spoilers).

Seeing midnight showings has become a normal thing for me to do and this was no exception.

I was very intrigued by the concept of an alternate present, built on a combination of human and alien technology. The first scene was intense enough to draw me in and I felt the rest of the film did a good job of sustaining the tension throughout.

It was really good to see the older versions of many of the characters and something of their lives, though there were some things I would have liked to see explained. For instance, there was little to no reference of David’s wife from the first film. And Steve’s absence was explained away with a throwaway line, which I felt was detrimental to the character.

I thought that the conflict between Dylan and Jake added some good tension to the movie and while I didn’t feel there was as much humour in this movie, there were a few parts that startled a laugh out of me.

It was good to have the opportunity to learn a bit more about the aliens and see how those like the former President were affected by the new threat.

There was a lot of good atmosphere in this movie, in particular inside the alien mothership. While a lot of the fighter pilots didn’t have developed personalities, I did care about those who were explored.

I would have liked to see a bit more of the relationship between Dylan and Jasmine. While there were small snippets shown and I guessed they were close, there wasn’t much in the way of their background. I did like seeing the path Jasmine had taken, though.

It was nice to see the family elements in this movie with the relationship between the former President and his daughter. I would have liked to see more of other relationships explored, such as the friendship between Jake and Charlie. It also would have been good to see more of how they’d been training, as the only details were about the young people flying the ships, rather than any weapons training.

This film was engaging and it had some good character arcs. If you enjoyed the first movie, I would suggest watching this. It also implied a set-up for a sequel at the end, which hopefully won’t be as many years in the making.

Independence Day

(This review may contain spoilers).

While I’m fairly certain I have seen this movie before, I only found a few bits familiar. It was still good to be able to sit down and watch this all the way through, though.

I thought it was good to see the different characters’ journeys intertwine through the course of the movie. There were some nice elements of humour that helped to diffuse the tension at times.

I liked being able to see a more human aspect to many of the characters, such as seeing David’s relationship with his father and how different it was to Miguel’s relationship with his, for instance. As well as the obvious in Will Smith, I recognised quite a few other actors and it was good to see them in the roles in this movie.

It was interesting to see something of the technology during that time period and while there was obvious use of special effects, I still found it easy to suspend my disbelief.

I liked seeing the President’s relationship with his daughter.I thought there were some really sweet moments between them. It was also good to see a lot of foreshadowing.

I did find myself pulled easily into the storyline and I really cared about the characters. I particularly liked Jasmine. I thought her strong will came across really well and it was also good to see she had compassion enough to try and help other people.

I didn’t really like Miguel’s father. Even though he did kind of redeem himself by the end of the movie, I was very much on edge every time he appeared.

The scene where the alien was interrogated was a particularly creepy one and I would have liked to see a bit more background about their race, even though I did like the opportunity to know small snippets about them.

It was nice to see Jasmine, Dylan and Steve together and I thought it was good to be able to see more of the human aspects in the relationships between the characters. While there were some nameless characters who died, on the whole, I was able to connect emotionally to most of them.

This was a film I wouldn’t mind seeing again in the future and even though there were some things left untold, it was an entertaining film with a solid storyline and interesting characters. At least in my opinion.
