While I’m fairly certain I have seen this movie before, I only found a few bits familiar. It was still good to be able to sit down and watch this all the way through, though.
I thought it was good to see the different characters’ journeys intertwine through the course of the movie. There were some nice elements of humour that helped to diffuse the tension at times.
I liked being able to see a more human aspect to many of the characters, such as seeing David’s relationship with his father and how different it was to Miguel’s relationship with his, for instance. As well as the obvious in Will Smith, I recognised quite a few other actors and it was good to see them in the roles in this movie.
It was interesting to see something of the technology during that time period and while there was obvious use of special effects, I still found it easy to suspend my disbelief.
I liked seeing the President’s relationship with his daughter.I thought there were some really sweet moments between them. It was also good to see a lot of foreshadowing.
I did find myself pulled easily into the storyline and I really cared about the characters. I particularly liked Jasmine. I thought her strong will came across really well and it was also good to see she had compassion enough to try and help other people.
I didn’t really like Miguel’s father. Even though he did kind of redeem himself by the end of the movie, I was very much on edge every time he appeared.
The scene where the alien was interrogated was a particularly creepy one and I would have liked to see a bit more background about their race, even though I did like the opportunity to know small snippets about them.
It was nice to see Jasmine, Dylan and Steve together and I thought it was good to be able to see more of the human aspects in the relationships between the characters. While there were some nameless characters who died, on the whole, I was able to connect emotionally to most of them.
This was a film I wouldn’t mind seeing again in the future and even though there were some things left untold, it was an entertaining film with a solid storyline and interesting characters. At least in my opinion.
