The Flight to Mecha

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I have some kind of mixed feelings about this book. I did think that the idea was a really interesting one, but I found it very hard to form any real emotional connection to any of the main characters. Even when I thought some of them were intriguing, I found it very difficult to care about what was going to happen to them.

I was interested in the details about the planet and the fungus that grew there. I didn’t really have a clear mental image of any of the characters, so I wasn’t entirely sure how the radiation had changed them physically. I did find it strange (though intriguing) to see how old-Earth language was used. I found myself sounding out the words at times, to see how the language spoken had evolved.

I would have liked some more details about how the clone-children worked and how creating one as a mate could be considered different to the type of relationship Cain had with his mother/stepmother, considering mating a clone-child with the original would kind of be incest… but also a very extreme form of narcissim.

It was interesting to see that marriage had become an outdated practise, since I felt that came across as quite a natural evolution of the society. I was also intrigued by the AIs… and I really liked But-A-Fly, though some of Cain’s interactions with Lucifer were quite amusing to read.

I did feel some sympathy for Lilith, but I couldn’t say I liked her as a character. She seemed very much of an anti-hero than Cain, who at least seemed somewhat bothered when allies were killed… even if I doubt he cared very much about them.

Probably my least favourite character was Eve, as I felt, by the end of the book, she was putting herself first. While I had some sympathy for what she’d gone through, I lost most of that when I felt she hadn’t given the children a real chance to have normal lives and normal relationships.

There was potential in this book, but I felt a lot of it fell by the wayside. I don’t intend to read a sequel to this book if one exists.

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Having read the previous two books in this trilogy, I was quite happy to have the opportunity to read the third book. It was really good to see this book pick up from where the previous one left off… and I liked the opportunity to see more of Silver using her technological knowledge.

While reading this book, I couldn’t help but keep comparing aspects of it to the Hunger Games, especially in regards to Silver’s reluctance to be a visible figurehead for the resistance.

While I did like the tension and action in this book, I really wasn’t thrilled by the love triangle… although it was good to see that there was very little conflict between Imrin and Opie.

I did feel that the Minister Prime and the King didn’t really have a lot of depth to them and came across as rather stereotypical villains, although it was interesting to see that Silver was able to understand and manipulate the King because of that understanding. I did like the fact that Silver was struggling with her own actions and how she was worried about being like the enemy… even though I didn’t really think there was much time spent developing that part of her personality.

I liked the fact that there were consequences to the actions Silver was taking, even though I still felt that the rebels were failing in what they were doing… or not doing, since they didn’t actually do anything apart from when Silver was encouraging them. While it was probably part of the world that people didn’t pull together… I didn’t feel the ending worked as well as it could have done. While it was good to have certain plans not revealed, I did feel that there wasn’t enough detail about the characters for it to make sense that there was more going on.

While there were some good elements of foreshadowing through the book, I didn’t really like the way the love triangle was solved at the end and I thought it wasn’t really satisfactory. The ending itself was good, though, and I would probably read more books set in this world in the future.

Warcraft: The Beginning

Warcraft The Beginning

(This review may contain spoilers).

I haven’t played any of the World of Warcraft games, but when I saw this movie advertised, I thought it looked quite intriguing.

It was good to have the opportunity to see both of the main races in Azeroth, though I would have liked to see more of the elves and dwarves.

There was a really good atmosphere in this film and I thought it was good that it was made clear the orcs and humans spoke very different languages.

I did feel that some of the character development fell by the wayside a bit. For instance, I would have liked to see a bit more of Lothar’s relationship with his son, though I found his relationship with Garona was quite an interesting one.

I liked Durotan and the fact that his relationship with his wife was really moving, though I found it harder to differentiate between the different orcs apart from Gul’dan, who I really didn’t like.

I did think Garona was an intriguing character and I liked the fact that I was able to get to learn bits and pieces of her past. I did like the King and it was good to see his relationship with Lothar… and I did like Lady Taria. While I didn’t get to know too much about most of the characters’ pasts, I did care about them as I was watching the movie and I wanted them to stay safe.

I thought Medivh was an interesting character, though I would have liked to see a bit more of his history and how Moroes came into all of it. I did like Khadgar and it was good to see the differences between the different kinds of magic.

I enjoyed this film as an introduction to the world and it was nice to see that the orcs had their own culture as well. I especially liked that they had honour, even if they didn’t like halfbreeds. I’d probably watch this film again in the future.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Out of the Shadows

(This review may contain spoilers).

Although it didn’t really stick well in my mind, I did actually quite enjoy the first film and I was quite eager to see this one… even though, while watching, I felt that a lot of the conflicts from the first movie were recycled.

While I did watch the cartoon series of TMNT as a child, I only really remember bits and pieces of it and the original movies. I do like the look of the turtles and it was cool to see that each of their different personalities came through well.

I enjoyed seeing Casey Jones, even though I wasn’t sure whether I should be taking his character seriously or not. The use of the hockey stick/mask was pretty cool… and I did have a bit of a fangirl moment of, ‘I’ve met him!’ about the actor, Stephen Amell.

In this movie, I didn’t find Shredder quite as creepy, as he spent most of the movie unmasked. I would have liked to see a bit more about how the ooze worked… and while I’m sure that wasn’t its official name, it was kind of funny to hear the characters all refer to it the same way.

Despite the arrangement the turtles had with Vernon, I really didn’t like him through most of the movie and I especially felt sorry for Mike, as he came across as the youngest and the one who most wanted to fit in. Out of all of the turtles, I felt that he (and Raph, to a certain extent) was the one who didn’t feel like he fit in.

There was a lot of humour in this movie and I also liked that there was a lot of tension. I would have perhaps wanted to see more of the turtles’ relationship with Splinter, but it was good to see him appear, however briefly.

I did kind of see some of the things happening towards the end, especially given what the bad guys are usually like. And there was little to no depth to the villains… even though Rocksteady and Bebop did provide some elements of comic relief.

I’m not sure I’d buy this movie on DVD, even though I did enjoy watching it. If there’s another movie in the series, though, I probably will see it.

COL_BILL_TEMPLATE_21

(This review may contain spoilers).

When I saw this movie advertised, I was immediately interested in watching it. While I don’t really understand much about stocks and stock prices, I did find this movie to be really entertaining to watch.

It was good to see there was a stark contrast between the feel of the show at the beginning of the movie and how the show had developed by the end of the movie.

Even though Kyle made some appallingly bad choices, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him and it was good to see how he and Lee connected through the course of the movie.

I did find myself rolling my eyes a bit at how Patty seemed much more concerned about the ratings and less so about the safety of the people working in the studio, at least at first.

I found myself on the edge of my seat for most of the movie and it was good there was so much tension in the movie.

It was good to learn more about both Lee and Kyle, along with the action going on. It was also interesting to see the reactions of other people watching what was happening in cafes and bars around the town.

I didn’t like Diane’s character very much at first to begin with, but as the movie went on, she did grow on me quite a bit and I thought it was good to see how she was working to find out what was really happening as well.

While there wasn’t a lot of background on some of the more minor characters, I did find that the main ones were developed enough to make me care about what was going to happen to them. I didn’t think much of Arlene, even though she did give Lee and Kyle something to bond over.

The ending of the movie wasn’t a surprise, but I was still on the edge of my seat watching and this movie is probably one I’d want to watch again in the future.

Renegade

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

It was good to see this book picked up where the previous one left off. I liked seeing the effects that Silver’s actions had on the outside world, but also more of the characters with her. Faith, in particular, came across as really strong… though I felt she had a lot of human qualities to her. I actually liked her a lot more than Silver and the others… although the rest of the group were intriguing characters as well.

I really didn’t like the hints of a love triangle that turned into a full-fledged one by the end of the book and I did feel like it was in danger of taking over the storyline. At the same time, even though it was good to see something more of the surrounding area and what was going on there, I did feel that the Kingsmen just kept cropping up in large numbers. I wasn’t sure how many of them there were in total, but they weren’t really individual and kind of put me in mind of a hive mind.

It was good that there was a lot of tension in this book and it didn’t really let up. I did feel that a lot of the secondary characters in Silver’s group, particularly the boys, weren’t really well-developed. While I could differentiate between most of the girls (and it was nice to see Pietra a bit more), I didn’t feel like enough time was spent on allowing me to get to know the secondary male characters.

While I did see one of the things coming, it was still pretty awful to read about and I ended up feeling a lot more sympathy for the person involved. While I wasn’t sure that, realistically, Silver should have been able to get away with everything she did, it was good to see that she was resourceful and kept on fighting, even though I thought the rebels were taking the easy way out. While it made sense that they weren’t talking to each other and weren’t using their full/real names… I did question what exactly they were doing, considering Silver was more active than they proved to be.

I did think it was good to see the group forced to live off the land, even though I would have liked to see them face more problems (such as toilets… and the girls’ time of the month). On a normal level, I could relate to the choices Silver made… but I did feel that she didn’t necessarily act in anyone’s best interest and there was a scene towards the end of the book that really jarred me.

Having the third and final book on my Kindle, I am looking forward to reading it, as I do want to find out what will happen to the characters next, even though I’m much less curious about the love triangle.

Alice Through The Looking Glass

Alice Through The Looking Glass

(This review may contain spoilers).

In the first Tim Burton movie, Alice didn’t really stick strongly in my mind as a character, but it was nice to see a return to Wonderland and the other characters from the first movie… even though this film bore very little resemblance to what I remembered of the book.

I particularly liked being able to see more of the pasts of the different characters. There were some quite obvious problems in Wonderland, but I found it really easy to empathise with Alice and her trying to be independent at a time when women weren’t able to take on the same jobs as men… even though I didn’t realise, at first, that the opening scene wasn’t a fantasy.

I really didn’t like Hamish. His attitude really set me on edge and I thought Alice showed a great deal of resentment dealing with him.

There were a couple of instances of vertigo that I felt were quite effective and I was on the edge of my seat a bit during some of the movie.

I really liked the Dormouse, who was probably my favourite. But I really did like the scene when the Mad Hatter and the others at the tea party were making all of the puns about Time.

I did find Time to be a really intriguing character and it was interesting to see what his home was like. I found him a lot more sympathetic than I was expecting… and Alice a lot more headstrong, even though there wouldn’t have been much of a movie if she hadn’t been.

I didn’t really feel there was a lot in the way of fantastical nonsense, but the serious parts of the movie did work particularly well… and there were times I really felt sorry for the Mad Hatter. And I did feel some sympathy for the Queen of Hearts, even though I really didn’t want to.

I don’t think I’d watch this movie again in the near future, but I did enjoy seeing it today. And it was cool to see Richard Armitage have a couple of cameos.
