From A Poison Pen

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Having read a book by this author in the past, I was quite interested in reading this collection of stories in the horror genre when offered the opportunity to do so, even though it took me a little while to actually get round to reading it.

There was a nice variety of different stories and I really liked that, in some of them, what happened was left to the reader’s imagination. The one with the Caribbean meat was one of those… but unfortunately, it also suffered from multiple POVs. While many of the other stories did keep switching POVs without warning, it was particularly obvious with the Caribbean story. While I enjoyed reading about the relationship between the two main characters, I was left with more questions than answers by the end.

One thing I thought was good about this collection was that there wasn’t any supernatural element. While one of the stories did have some science fiction aspects to it, I liked the fact that they were all about horrible things ordinary humans can do to each other.

I thought that the two stories about the second World War were particularly difficult to read, though the second was more moving. The first one afforded a glimpse into the horrors a bit closer to home, which I thought was particularly effective.

There were actually quite a few central characters who I found to be really unlikable. The main characters in the story about the former careworkers was one that springs to mind. However, in the absence of any sympathetic characters, I did end up wanting to see the survival of the person who was the ‘lesser evil’.

I particularly liked being able to see a couple of stories where the tables were turned and what I thought was going to happen wasn’t what ended up happening. It was nice to get a few surprise twists.

I liked the story with the diary, though by the end of that one, I had some questions. That was another instance where I felt the changing of POVs didn’t really work, as rather than there being a twist, there wasn’t much that seemed logical.

A lot of the short stories did contain some really good elements of tension and I was kept reading throughout. I was able to picture a lot of the events and characters in my head.

The first story in particular had some good elements of foreshadowing and I figured out what was going to happen fairly early on. Still, the journey to the end of the story was an interesting one.

Despite the fact there were some minor issues, such as the switching between different POVs and not a lot of background always provided, I did find this collection of stories entertaining to read and I would be interested in reading more books by this author in the future.

Reckoning Realms of Darkness

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

It took me a while to realise the previous book I’d read (Torment) actually took place after this book. Unfortunately, knowing more of the background didn’t really help me enjoy this book any more than the other one.

The constant switching between different POVs was really frustrating and made it nearly impossible for me to connect to any of the characters. I couldn’t really understand what was going on with Casey and I felt zero sympathy for her. The choices she made were awful and there was nothing to suggest she’d ever been a true friend.

The prologue at the beginning did help to answer a few questions, but the characters didn’t seem bothered about the danger they were in. I couldn’t picture anyone in my mind and I had no idea of what kind of relationship existed in the group as a whole. They didn’t really seem to care about each other… and there was very little detail about why certain characters (like Fuzz) couldn’t reveal what they knew. If the world was in such danger, ignorance seemed more like a curse.

The romantic aspects didn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense. For someone who was supposed to be in love… Reese just seemed really fickle. If I’d been able to connect emotionally with her, I would have been disappointed in her actions… as it was, I was just waiting for her poor decisions to get her and the rest of her friends killed.

There was little to no explanation about certain things, such as Harley’s abrupt appearance with the rest of his gang. Considering there was no description of any of the characters, all I had to go on were the names of them… and since there were so many ignored until needed for the plot, I spent most of the action scenes trying to figure out who was where and why they were there.

I was disappointed in this book and I felt there was a lot that could be improved. I would have liked to see more background and character development. I wanted to care about the characters… but that was hard to do when they didn’t even care about themselves or each other.

The Moreva of Astoreth

The Moreva of Astoreth

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

When I first saw this book, I was immediately drawn to the cover… and when I read the blurb (though it’s hard to read on the print copy of the book), I was immediately interested… so when I won a copy of this book, I was very happy.

While there were some cliches during this book, such as tension between Tehi and Teger at first, I found this book fairly easy to read. I liked seeing the evolution of Tehi’s character through the course of the book and it was good to see that her work as a healer was so at odds with her contempt towards the other races.

As I read more of the book and learned more of the world Tehi and the others inhabited, I could actually understand why Tehi felt the way she did. A lot about their religion seemed dangerous (and it was good to get some explanations by the end of the book), but I felt the worst part was the non-consensual aspect… and I would have liked to see that accepted as being wrong, as I could tell how negatively it affected Tehi.

It was interesting to see how the hakoi’s views of Tehi began to change. I liked the fact she was a healer first and foremost and that she was a strong person… strong enough to do what was right, even if it meant breaking the Protocol.

I would have liked a bit more background on the Moreva and their rituals. I didn’t really understand the makeup masks and how the Moreva came into being. I did find it easy to empathise with Tehi’s problems, both at the start and later on as she and Teger grew closer. While I didn’t really like the almost immediate declarations of love, I did feel that their relationship seemed to evolve naturally.

I especially liked Tehi’s friendship with Hyme and it was good to see them pooling their knowledge. It was also good to see that Tehi did have to fight and things didn’t come easy for her… and as I learned more of her past, my empathy for her grew.

While there were occasions this book moved slowly, I did find it fairly easy to read and I’d be interested in seeing more of the world and the characters… particularly given what was revealed towards the end.

Review Opportunity: Captive’s Kiss

Captive's Kiss

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I was really happy to get the opportunity to read this novella and have the chance to see the world and the characters again… though I particularly liked being able to see another group of Watchers.

I thought it was particularly interesting to see something of the culture of the Lash demons, though I was a bit confused about how everything worked with them going into heat… or that’s what it seemed like, anyway. While there was an element of love at first sight, I really liked the relationship that grew between Saige and Tanner and it was good to learn bits and pieces of Saige’s past… though I was a bit disappointed not to learn very much of Tanner’s past.

While this book was a novella, I did like being able to see some of the interactions between Tanner and his fellow Watchers. I would have liked to see a bit more of Arawn and his team of Watchers, as well as the Solsti, but I did especially like being able to see more and different demons.

I found Saige really easy to empathise with and I felt a lot of sympathy for her as I got to know more about her history and what she was forced to do. While I would have liked to see more depth to the villains, instead of a group of bad guys, I thought that the hints of mystery with the disappeared demons a really interesting one. It was really good to see that Tanner wasn’t willing to let things go and just assume that Saige was acting of her own volition.

I liked seeing Saige’s relationship with her brother and I would have liked to see more of their interactions. It was good to know what the limitations to Saige’s abilities were… and I also especially liked the fact that Tanner didn’t try to push her into anything, even though they had had some erotic interactions at the beginning.

While the threat in this book wasn’t as worldwide as some of the others, there was real danger that made me care about the characters and the situation. I’d definitely like to see more of the world and the characters in the future.

Thor: Dueling With Giants

Thor Dueling With Giants

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

While Thor has been a long-time favourite of mine since the movie, I didn’t feel that this book was as good as the blurb had implied.

I liked the opportunity to see something of Thor and Loki as children, though it was a bit sad to see how early on Loki’s resentment of Thor began… though to be honest, I didn’t feel that Thor acted very brotherly towards Loki. While they referred to each other as such, I didn’t feel that there was much sincerity on either side.

While it was good to have the opportunity to learn more about Frigga’s background, I felt there was too much summarising of the history between the characters. Volstagg’s defeat of the trolls towards the beginning made me laugh… and it provided some good relieving of tension.

I really liked the fact that, although the book was based on Marvel’s Thor, there was a lot involving the world tree and different Norse myths, though I didn’t really feel like Loki came across as a very complex villain. I was a bit disappointed not to see more of his plans and that he only played a very small part in the whole thing. Plus, I felt that his resentment of Thor was just that… without any of the complexities in being raised as a brother to someone. I did feel the movies did a good job in showing that complicated relationship between them.

I did really like seeing Frigga acting capably and being able to defend herself. I enjoyed seeing her work her magic in an offensive way… but I was disappointed that Gudrun didn’t play a big part in that, either, and there seemed to be an element of ‘the woman stays at home with the children’ in the narration.

I did especially like seeing the final short story and something of how Sif began training to be a warrior. I liked that Thor was one of the only ones who wanted to accept her… and I especially liked how gracious Fandral ended up being. I would have liked to see this book expanded upon and less information dumping, but it was entertaining to read.

Guardians of the Galaxy Castaways

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I found this book a really entertaining one to read. While it seemed to start partway through a plot, I thought that the opening scene did a good job of establishing the characters and something of the relationships between them. It was good to see the tensions between the group… and the fact that, even though they were allies (and even friends), there were still some very real conflicts between them. While it was disheartening to see the group split up, there didn’t seem any other way to resolve things.

I particularly liked seeing the friendship between Rocket and Groot and how it was easy to see what Groot was really saying, beneath the only three words he could actually say.

While it was easy to see that Quill regretted what had happened, I found it difficult to see what was so different about this time… while it might have been one of the only times they’d been stranded on a planet, I couldn’t imagine it was the first time Quill had got them into awkward situations.

I did really like the fact that I could tell the Guardians were all conflicted characters… even Quill, beneath the exterior of a rogue. While I would have liked to see something of how Quill fought his way to become the Duke’s righthand man, it was good to see that his skills didn’t make him perfect… and I did care about his safety while he was battling. And the first scene was difficult to read, with how alone he seemed to feel.

I liked the opportunity to see more of the planet and the different races that peopled it. It was also good to see how the different crew members found temporary places… but I especially liked that the call of friendship was still strong enough to bring them all together.

I did think there was a lot of buildup and there was a lot of tension during the battle, but it was good to see more of the natives able to stand up for themselves. And I liked being able to get some answers about the history of the planet and seeing the Guardians work together.

I probably would read more book/s about the Guardians of the Galaxy in the future, whether comics or novels.

Aliens/Vampirella

Aliens Vs. Vampirella

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

While I haven’t heard of Vampirella, I have seen most of the movies in the Alien franchise. It was an interesting take, to see a vampire having to deal with the devastation caused by the aliens.

I would have liked to see a bit more background to Vampirella and perhaps something of the background of the characters on Mars. I would have liked to see a bit more in the way of character interactions, since even though the horror elements were good, there was too much in the way of characters I didn’t really care about getting hurt or killed.

It was interesting to see the prejudices people had towards Vampirella’s kind. I was also intrigued by the ancient civilisation that was found… and it was even more interesting that they had the chance to meet one of the members; though I didn’t really much like him at first. I was a bit thrown by how he kept on referring to humans as cattle… but that did make sense, as the attitudes of his kind were clearly very different to how Vampirella viewed humans.

I was a bit confused by the random garden area that the aliens were able to attack and the characters who had been killed. It was good to see Vampirella able to grow her own wings and I thought they looked really pretty. I also thought that it was good she had weaknesses and that she couldn’t just fight; she had to run and shelter. Even though it might have been cool to see an alien and a vampire battle it out, I appreciated the fact that it was as realistic as it could be, considering the supernatural/science fiction elements.

I liked the artwork and I felt the aliens’ scary appearance were portrayed particularly well. I knew what was coming several times, which made me tense up… especially in the scene with the face-huggers.

There were some nice human elements and while I didn’t get to know the secondary characters well, I had little trouble with the main characters. I’d be interested in seeing more of Vampirella in other comics.

Black Magick

Black Magick

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

When I saw the cover and blurb for this comic book, I was immediately intrigued, considering I enjoy reading books with modern-day paranormal aspects to them. And I like comic books, too, so this was particularly good.

Although the plot of having a police officer involved in paranormal crimes wasn’t a unique one, I did think that having a witch as the police officer was an intriguing idea. And although I would have liked to know a bit more of Rowan’s background, I did like the fact she was a tough person and I had the impression she could take care of herself.

I was a bit confused about what the rules of the world were and I would have liked some more detail about who knew about Rowan’s ‘other’ life and who didn’t. For instance, it seemed like at least one of her fellow officers knew… but her partner didn’t.

I thought it was interesting to see something of Rowan’s friendship with the leader (priestess?) of her coven, but I didn’t see much in the way of conflict between her two lives. I did find it interesting to see something of how her magic worked, but I would have liked to get a bit more detail about how her and the priestess were different to Wiccans. I also would have liked to see a bit more of the other Coven members.

There was a lot of tension in this comic, especially towards the end… which was really quite creepy, even though I didn’t really know what was going on. And I wasn’t really sure how Rowan had known what was going on. I kind of felt very much like I’d been thrown into the middle of a storyline… and because it didn’t really let up, I wasn’t given much of a chance to get to know the background and characters well enough to empathise with them. But I did really like the fact that there were strong female characters. And it was pretty cool to see the priestess interacting with someone from the church.

I’d like to get a bit more background to this world… but I’d probably read other comics in this series in the future.

DC Graphic Novel Collection: Batman and Son

DC Comics Graphic Novel Collection Batman and Son

(This review may contain spoilers).

It was especially intriguing to see Batman realise he had a son… and considering he had a playboy reputation, I was a little surprised he didn’t have more illegitimate children.

I thought it was particularly interesting to see how Batman was interacting with Tim. I really didn’t like Damien, even though I did feel a bit of sympathy for him and I would have liked the opportunity to see a bit more of his past and interactions with his mother and parents.

I did feel sorry for Tim at points in this book and I thought that Batman didn’t seem to act like much of a guardian towards him. I would have liked to see a bit more of Tim and Damien’s interactions… without Damien trying to kill everyone close to Batman, even though it was somewhat sad to see how desperate he was to prove himself to his father. However, I wasn’t sure if he really wanted to help Batman… even though I would have really liked to see him spend more time with Batman and the others and learn a different way of life. It was disappointing that Batman didn’t really say much to him about hurting Tim… almost like Bruce didn’t think Damien was able to be saved.

I was intrigued by the differences between Talia in the first set of comics and her personality in the final one. It was interesting to see her introduction… but she seemed like a much tamer person in her first appearance. I would have liked to see if that was just because different writers changed her… or if she changed due to things that happened. It would have been good to see something of her motivations, though.

I thought that there was a lot of tension in the first set of comics, but not as much in the second comic. I did find the storyline easy to follow and it was really good to see Bruce interacting with Alfred and having to act to make sure his reputation remained intact. While there wasn’t a lot in the way of the contradictions in Bruce’s personality, there was enough that I was very interested in seeing the different aspects of his personality.
