Vacation

(This review may contain spoilers).

Having seen the trailer for this movie, I thought it looked really entertaining and amusing to watch. Having seen it yesterday, I found it met those expectations.

I liked the family elements in this movie, even if I did think that a lot of the characters were over the top. I especially thought it was amusing to see Kevin constantly going at James.

A lot of the aspects with the car, while very confusing in regards to many of the buttons, did add a lot of humour to the movie… especially in regard to the SatNav. It was also pretty cool to see how there were some running themes throughout this movie, such as the truck.

There were a lot of moments in this movie where I found myself laughing out loud. While there weren’t as many ‘sweet’ moments in this, it was funny to see Rusty and Debbie trying to sneak off for some ‘alone’ time and constantly having those plans foiled.

There were some quite downright disturbing scenes, especially the one which took place in the supposed ‘hot springs’. I’m reasonably certain more people than just me made sounds of disgust. The cows were also particularly disturbing.

I recognised quite a few of the actors in this movie and while I thought they did really good jobs, Chris Hemsworth (despite being an actor I really like) played a character who was… downright disturbing. It was interesting to see more of Rusty’s family, in his sister and his parents… though his parents didn’t exactly come across as normal.

I did find this movie entertaining. There were some exaggerated scenes and some very amusing ones… but also some scenes that just made me cringe. The ending was satisfactory and while I doubt I’ll watch this again, it was definitely worth watching the first time.

The Mutant Files Redzone

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

This is the first book in this series that I’ve read, but there was enough detail to allow me to follow the story without any problems.

I felt that this book was a good mix of genres. There were some science fiction elements, but a lot of action and very tense scenes.

I liked Cassandra’s character. I found her very easy to relate to and empathise with. I recognised a lot of things about myself in her… particularly in not wanting to get up in the morning; though I’m rarely late when I’ve made commitments, whether work or personal.

I was very interested in the details about the disease that caused the mutations. It was good to read about how society was divided between mutants and ‘normals’, to the point where mutants are kept completely separated to people who don’t suffer the effects of the disease.

I thought it was good to see that police work still seemed to operate the same as it does in the present. Cassandra took me by surprise when she punched out the reporter… but it as good to see her suffering the consequences of her actions, even though I did think she was let off easily.

There was a lot of action in this book and I did care about what happened to Cassandra. While I thought the romance was glossed over more than it should have been and there was too much summarising of the interactions between Cassandra and Kane, the romance didn’t seem to take over the book and have Cassandra care more about that than the other things that should have been important to her.

It was good to see what it was like for Cassandra after she entered the Red Zone. Even if I wasn’t sure how the disease was carried, I was still concerned about her safety… more so after what I saw her half brother and his half brothers were like. While James was intriguing and seemed to have some depth to him, I didn’t like him as a character. I would have liked to see more of Cassandra’s interactions with them… but I was on edge the entire time she was there.

There were some nice elements of foreshadowing and I felt the pace of the book really picked up later on. I found this book to be really entertaining and well-written… and I’d be interested in reading the other books in this series in the future.

Trainwreck

(This review may contain spoilers).

This was a movie I found really entertaining to watch, despite the strong levels of adult content and some quite graphic scenes.

It was interesting to see the stark differences in personality between Amy and Kim. I did like the fact that they came across as real sisters… with arguments, but also support between them. And it was also good to see the different ways they viewed their dad.

There was a lot of adult humour in this movie. What was good was the fact there were also quite a few serious moments here as well.

It was easy to like Amy, despite her not being the kind of person I’d find easy to relate to in reality. Although a lot of her issues were ones she needed to deal with herself, I could understand the rut she ultimately found herself in.

I really didn’t like Amy’s boss, Dianne, at all. I thought she was really unprofessional and manipulative. I’m guessing she wasn’t supposed to be liked, though, so I’m sure that works out.

I did think that a lot of the supporting characters weren’t expanded upon in the way they could have been. Amy and Aaron both had a lot of depth to them, but apart from Kim, a lot of the other characters seemed like caricatures.

I did like the romance. I particularly liked the opportunity to hear Amy’s internal monologue… especially when there’s the montage of her and Aaron together.

I did think it took a while for the conflict in the relationship to show up, even though there were a couple of false starts. While I could see Aaron’s point about certain things, there was one aspect in particular I felt he was being unreasonable on. At the same time, it was good to see all of the things Amy had kept bottled up coming out.

This movie was entertaining and very amusing to watch in places. There were a number of cringe-worthy scenes, but I felt the movie did stay true to the characters up till the end. There was a lot of adult content… but if you like that, this movie is worth giving a try.

Genre: Dystopian, Young Adult, Romance, Science Fiction
Rate: 4 out of 5 stars
Synopsis:

The thrilling conclusion to Landry Park is full of love, betrayal, and murder–perfect for fans of Divergent, The Selection, andPride and Prejudice.
In Landry Park, Madeline turned her back on her elite family, friends, and estate to help the Rootless. Now, in Jubilee Manor, she struggles to bring the Gentry and the Rootless together. But when Gentry heirs—Madeline’s old friends—are murdered, even she begins to think a Rootless is behind it, putting her at odds with the boy she loves and the very people she is trying to lead. If she can’t figure out who is killing her friends and bring them to justice, a violent war will erupt and even more will die—and Madeline’s name, her estate, and all the bonds she’s forged won’t make any difference.
This conclusion to Landry Park, which VOYA dubbed “Gone with the Wind meets The Hunger Games,” is a richly satisfying, addictive read.
(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I found myself very quickly drawn back into the world of Landry Park. It was good to see that things weren’t perfect, even with Jack now in control of the house. I thought it was really realistic to see that the Rootless were suspicious… of Jack and of all the gentry. In many ways, they were probably right to be.

I did have a lot of sympathy for the Rootless… even those like Smith. While I thought his perspective could only cause more problems all round, I could see where he was coming from. Violence isn’t the answer, but I could easily understand why people in that situation would make that kind of call.

It was interesting to see that Madeline’s relationship with David wasn’t anything like perfect and that they still had problems. I found Madeline particularly interesting because there were times when, despite trying to do the right thing, she did come across as a bit self-centred. She wasn’t perfect and that made her a much more intriguing character.

I liked the opportunity to see Madeline with some of the other gentry. It was good to see that there was a mix of opinions about the Rootless. I liked Philip’s character a bit more in this book… and it was good to see Madeline being able to spend time with people who actually were friends… not including Cara, who I think wasn’t exactly a friend, but close to. I would have liked the opportunity to see more of Cara and Ewan together.

It was good to see Madeline with her parents. There were some hints of a deeper relationship between Jack and Alexander and it would have been good to see more of them as brothers. I especially liked Charlie. It nearly made my heart break to see how scared he was of Alexander. And while I didn’t like or agree with many of Alexander’s morals… there were times I thought a good person could eventually come out.

While there was some mystery to this book, there was very little surprise involved towards the end. I did get the impression that Madeline was in real danger and it was good to see that even the ‘good’ characters weren’t perfect.

It’s a bit disappointing that this book is the end of the duology, since I feel there’s so much more of the story that could be told. I would be interested in reading more books by this author in the future, though. I enjoyed this book a lot… and while there are dark moments, there’s just as much hope and light during the course of this book.

Star Trek: Into Darkness

Star Trek Into Darkness

(This review may contain spoilers).

Khan is probably the only villain I’m familiar with from the original Star Trek movies, so seeing him made use of in this movie was a good nod to the original franchise. Although Benedict Cumberbatch doesn’t fit with the original version of Khan, he portrays him particularly well… at least in my opinion.

One of the strongest parts of this movie, in my opinion, was the tension between Kirk and Spock. In this movie, they seem to butt heads a whole lot more than in the first movie. And both of them are characters whose motivations I can understand and relate to.

It was nice to see more of Spock’s relationship with Uhura, even though I preferred the friendship between him and Kirk. There was a lot of action in this movie… and a lot of scenes that were really tense to watch, drawing me into the movie despite having seen it before.

There were some elements of humour in this movie, but I felt that those were used at the right moment and didn’t seem forced or stilted. I especially liked seeing some of Scotty’s motivations in this movie… and how he refused to compromise on what he felt was right.

I liked the fact that Kirk demonstrated he was able to do the right thing… despite his anger and grief over Khan’s actions. I thought this movie was more of a character growth for him than the previous. In fact, I felt both him and Spock grew and matured over the course of this movie.

There were a lot of really cool special effects in this movie and it was also good to see a little more of aliens and androids in this movie.

I liked that the bad guys did have elements of depth to them, even Khan. I also thought it was good to see more of Pike and future!Spock in this movie, too, though I couldn’t help but wonder how many of the crew members actually knew about the parallel timelines.

The ending to this was good and I noticed a couple of scenes that paid homage to Wrath of Khan. I’m looking forward to the next Star Trek movie.

Star Trek 2009

(This review may contain spoilers).

Despite my mum being a big fan of Star Trek, I never really got into the original movies. It wasn’t until this one came out that I found myself drawn into this franchise.

This movie was particularly compelling from the start. Even though the first scene was only a short one, it was enough to set up the rest of the events. The first scene was really emotional and I felt the actors did a good job of showing the relationship between Kirk’s parents. It didn’t hurt that I recognised both of those actors and have enjoyed their work in other media.

I liked the opportunity to see both Kirk and Spock as children. I felt those scenes did a good job of setting up their characters for later on. I also thought it was interesting how the rivalry between Kirk and Spock later on contrasted so sharply with the friendship their original incarnations had.

There were some really emotional scenes in this, as well as a lot of action. I liked the chance to see Spock interacting with his parents and I would have liked to see Kirk interacting with his mother.

Although there was a bit of romance in this movie, I didn’t feel it overwhelmed the plot. I would have liked to see more in the way of the alien races… apart from Spock, there didn’t seem to be that many on the Enterprise. Considering the Federation is made up of so many planets, I thought there should have been more in the way of alien races.

There was a good amount of action and quite a lot of tension in this movie. I liked most of the supporting characters, in particular Chekov and Sulu. I would have liked to see more of both of them.

This movie did a good job of drawing me into the world. Although it’s part of the Star Trek franchise, I thought the differences were explained well. I cared about the characters and the danger they were in and I thought the actors portrayed their characters really well.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000040_00008]

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I liked the blurb of this book… and the cover was suitably creepy, one that I felt fit in really well with the plot of the story.

I found the world really easy to follow and although apocalyptic scenarios are quite a common theme, I thought this was a fairly unique idea. The Reaper was a really awful creature. Or being. Whatever it was. Its ability to absorb its prey was something that was really creepy during the course of the book. It was pretty awful when it used the forms of those it absorbed to talk to the people who knew its victims.

I really liked Lily as a character, though her personality seemed at odds with the way she acted at her first appearance. I also liked the fact that she bonded so quickly with a cat at the library she’d taken shelter in. I could definitely identify with her need to escape into an imaginary world, due to how awful her reality had become. There were times I felt a lot of sympathy for her in the book.

I did really like Kimi as a character as well. While there was a bit too much telling rather than showing, and a lot of information dumps (her attraction to Derek really didn’t seem to come across as very realistic), I did like her as a character. And her friendship that formed with Lily was particularly sweet.

I thought it was interesting that the soldiers trained dogs to sniff out the infected, though I would have liked a bit more detail about how they knew dogs were able to do that. I did feel like the dogs, especially Kerchak and Spook, were really good characters in their own right. I loved the fast bond Spook formed with Lily.

I really hated Cooper and Kyle in this book. They were characters who didn’t really seem to have any redeeming qualities to them. I did really like Jason and Innie, though. I thought it was sweet to see them together… and they both proved themselves to be resourceful and intelligent.

I did very much enjoy reading this book. I would read more books by this author in the future.

Absolutely Anything

(This review may contain spoilers).

I was fairly certain this movie would be an entertaining one to watch… and I wasn’t disappointed when I saw it at the cinema.

This film was a particularly amusing one. I think a lot of people would come up with all sorts of things they could do with ultimate power… but those that Neil does without any conscious thought are quite amusing.

The trailer does show some of the amusing things that occur in the film… but there are plenty that take viewers by surprise.

Neil is a character who’s quite sympathetic. He’s very likable and the actor who plays him, Simon Pegg, does a really good job of portraying the character. It’s amusing to see how the other characters react to him and it’s also nice to see that the other characters do have lives outside of their interactions with Neil.

I liked Catherine and I could really empathise with her and how she was going through things with both her work and Grant. I also liked Ray… and I found myself cringing at what Neil inadvertently set in motion with his attempt to ‘help’ his friend.

There was a lot about this movie that made me laugh outright and a few things that did come as a surprise. I also really liked Dennis the dog… even though it was kind of bittersweet to hear Robin Williams’ voice again. I thought it was amusing how so many misunderstandings came about from things that were really quite innocent… and Dennis’ devotion to Neil was incredibly sweet to see.

There were other actors I recognised in this movie and it was good to see the ordinary, everyday lives of the characters as well. The ‘supreme beings’ were fairly amusing… especially with some of the misunderstandings they had.

If you like science fiction comedy, I would recommend this as one to watch. While there are some elements of toilet or sex humour, a lot of the humour is deeper than that. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and I imagine I would like to watch it again in the future.

The War Prince

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I really did like the blurb of this book. I also really liked the cover. It’s very appealing and I think it does a good job of showing what the book’s about.

I did think that the book seemed really rushed. There was a lot of condensing down of events and an awful lot of skipping over the passage of time in the space of a paragraph.

I liked Anthony as a character, but I didn’t think enough space was given for him to grow as a character. There were very little surprises for me as a reader, since any mystery was stated in the narration.

There were some interesting aspects to the story, such as the whole thing about Adrian giving Anthony his heart. I did find a lot of the events to be quite confusing. I’m not sure I really understood everything that was going on. The main event was obvious… but some of the things, like the flowers, weren’t really explained as well as they could have been.

I was a bit confused about what was going on in the town. There were times I thought that the whole town was corrupted, but by the end, it seemed like it wasn’t.

Although the main characters were fairly well-defined, there were other characters who weren’t shown nearly as much as they could have been. There were relationships between certain characters that were talked about… but not really described.

If this book had been longer, I think it would have been much easier to read and definitely worthy of more than three stars. There were some elements I really liked in this book, such as the former relationship between Adrian and the Devil. Later on, there are some nice scenes involving Pops… but I was disappointed that the interactions between him and Anthony were only summarised at the beginning. I was also confused about the time frame of this book… and there was too much telling rather than showing.

I’d read a sequel to this book if it was expanded upon. The danger the characters were in didn’t really seem that strong… and I think the main problem was with not being as emotionally connected to the characters as I could have been.
