Ealdorman

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I actually found this book to be quite a good, interesting, entertaining read.

I can’t speak for the historical accuracy of this novel. I only know bits and pieces of the time this novel is set in. But I found the characters to be interesting and well-written and the storyline to be engaging, one that kept me reading.

The amount of characters with similar-sounding names was a bit confusing, though. By the end of the book, I was struggling to differentiate between the different people.

I really liked the relationships between the characters, especially Leofwine and his wife. The scenes between them were particularly sweet and it was nice to see that real love had grown from the arranged marriage.

I felt that the author did a really good job of showing the politics that was in the kingdom. I also thought that it came across really well how difficult Leofwine found his injury and partial blindness – as well as how he learned to compensate for that disability. Of course, anyone who wasn’t whole in that time would have a much more difficult time of it than someone with that kind of injury in modern day.

The descriptions in the book were really good and I was able to see a lot of the events happening in my mind, especially when it came to the fighting scenes. I did, however, notice quite a few errors in the books – apostrophes used when something was supposed to be plural; and Hunter changed gender at one point.

I think I’d definitely be interested in reading more books in this series. It would be good to see what else is going to happen.

I have a few mixed feelings about this book. Ideally, I would have given this 3.5 stars. It’s not quite at four stars, I’m afraid.

The blurb of this book sounded really good and interesting, but I couldn’t quite get into this book as easily as some of the other books. I liked the different powers, but I didn’t think there was nearly enough information about it.

I was a bit disappointed in Mara’s interactions with the guys. She kind of seemed to lose her mind when she was around a good-looking guy. I did think that a lot of the other characters weren’t as well-developed. I kept getting confused with some of them.

Some of the interactions between the different characters were really interesting and I did like the whole Keeper-thing. I just… had no idea what the point was. It seemed really cruel to just abandon the children – and also a bit silly.

I think I would have liked to see a bit more explanation about everything. The amount of characters and their motivations were still confusing. I think they could have been combined into a fewer amount of characters.

I would be interested in seeing what will happen to the characters in this book in the future. This was an entertaining read, even though there were quite a few errors in the book as well. I think there could have been a bit more proof-reading.

Weird dreams

Okay, so this is quite a random post, but last night, I had a weird dream where a particular actor came to my house for a meal. And then lots of other people showed up and… well, it was just weird.

It got me thinking about dreams and how they seem perfectly natural and normal while you’re experiencing them… and then you wake up and wonder how much cheese you had the night before.

I’m sure that, if I tried looking up dream interpretations, there would be all sorts of odd meanings linked to this. Like… maybe my subconscious desire is to become a chef. (Which I think is highly unlikely, but anything is possible). On the other hand, that particular actor has been in my head for a while, so that’s presumably where that part of the dream came from.

So… how many people have weird and strange dreams? I’m not talking about fantasies – just about those dreams that have you waking up going, ‘Huh?’

The One You Love

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I tend to feel that thriller books, like horror, can be quite difficult to sustain the level of suspense throughout. I often find myself growing bored, because sometimes things can get pretty ridiculous.

That actually wasn’t the case here. I felt that this book was more about the mystery – and it was very much more character-driven than just plot-driven.

One of the things that came across really well in this book was the fact that a lot of the characters seemed to have secrets. Pretty major ones. I did get a bit confused with some of the characters, but for the most part, I found them easily relatable. And I did quite like Emma and her friendship with Lizzy – though I would have liked a bit more detail about Emma’s relationship with Dan.

I did think that this book doesn’t portray journalists and the police in a great light. In a way, the police come across as quite uncaring. It seems strange that all they’d do is give a ‘talking-to’ to someone who was stalking a person enough to take a lot of pictures of them. If it’s just one person’s word, I could see them having to have more evidence… but when they have actual photographs? I admit, I don’t interact with police, but I’d like to think police officers in reality are better than that.

I thought that what happened with Richard came across really well. I couldn’t stop myself from reading this book and I really enjoyed it. I did think that the hospital could have been a bit more secure with Richard, though.

I think I’d definitely be interested in reading more books by this author in the future. It ended on a cliffhanger and I would have liked to see the aftermath of everything that had happened. I felt that there was a lot more of the story that could have been explored.

There’s something particularly scary about bad things happening in airplanes – at least in my opinion. I felt similarly about the film Snakes on a Plane. I suspect it might be because escape isn’t as easy when you’re stuck thousands of feet up in the air.

I think Liam Neeson in particular did a really good job in this film. The desperation of the character he played came through really well. It was also really easy to relate with a lot of the characters in this film.

A lot of the action kept me on the edge of my seat, but if I’m honest, the law enforcement didn’t really come across as very intelligent. The marshal calls to report a threat and an account has been set up in his name for the money to be wired into. So of course the marshal was stupid enough to tell them to trace his own account. I wouldn’t normally be quite that blunt, but this isn’t the first time I’ve seen that kind of idiocy where the police are involved.

The way the hostages were killed was pretty interesting, but I did notice a plot hole. Well, I think I noticed something that didn’t work – but I remember being quite distracted by shouting that was going on in the cinema.

I felt that the airplane itself was utilised in quite a good way – like the oxygen masks and depressurizing the cabin.

I felt the twists worked really well and made sense. I also appreciate that some attempt was made to provide reasons for why it was happening – though I don’t think there was quite enough information given.

I think this film is worth seeing if you like this kind of genre. I would personally recommend watching it, though I probably wouldn’t buy it on DVD; not at full price, anyway.

Thor: The Dark World

Thor The Dark World

(This review may contain spoilers).

I absolutely adored Thor when it came out. I bought it on DVD almost straight away and I did the same with Avengers Assemble (though it’s scratched, so I think I need to replace that copy now).

Certain scenes in this film reminded me of why I like tricksters in mythology so much. Loki was definitely my favourite character in this, though Thor came a very close second. When I watched the banter between the two brothers, I loved it. I thought it was captured very well in this film.

I actually saw the very first showing of this film in my local cinema. It was only the second time I actually stayed up to watch a midnight showing of a film and I think it was definitely worth watching it then.

It was really good to see Captain America have a cameo in this film. And it was really great to see the characters from the first Thor film, as well as the new ones who appeared. (Darcy was an amusing character as well).

Loki’s complex nature came across really well in this film. I think he could go both ways – a mischievous hero, or a villain with good qualities to him. One scene in particular has actually brought tears to my eyes each time I’ve seen it.

There was one specific plothole that I noticed in this film. I’m not going to say specifically what it was, but either there’s going to be a twist of some kind… or that particular part wasn’t thought through.

I personally recommend this film if you like superhero movies. I feel that Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston are really good actors and they work really well together in this. I certainly hope there will be a Thor 3 on the horizon.

Star Wars Legacy Volume 3

Star Wars Legacy Cover

(I received a free copy of this book from Diamond BookDistributors, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Star Wars has always been one of my favourite things, ever since I can remember. I don’t know when I first watched the original trilogy, but I have all sorts of memories of watching and re-watching it. And I remember reading loads of tie-in novels, as well as listening to at least one audio tape.

I think this might be the first Star Wars thing I’ve read that’s set quite far in the future. It was really interesting to see a future Skywalker, though I’m not sure I could say Cade is a really likable character.

The artwork was good, but I felt that, in some places, it was a bit too strong in the drawings. I felt that the female characters had fairly masculine looks about them.

In a way, I also felt that this mirrored the original series quite a lot. The whole Dark Side and Light Side thing has kind of become more guidelines than hard and fast rules, though. Characters seem able to toe the line between them – and it also seems very black and white, with no grey areas. (If you kill someone with Force Choke or with a lightsabre, it doesn’t matter how you did it… they’re still dead).

Cade was still an interesting character and I did like his relationships with the other characters. I did also like the ending of this book. It was an entertaining read, though I did have to squint a bit to read some of the speech.

Although this was the third book, I did find it fairly easy to understand. I think I’d definitely check out other comics/graphic novels set in the Star Wars universe in the future. I really liked seeing the glimpses of Luke in this book, too.

Coriolanus

Coriolanus Poster

(This is a review and may contain spoilers).

Just to be clear – I’m not really someone who loves Shakespeare. I’m not saying I hate his works, but I do feel pretty neutral about them. Well, the exception to that is the play Romeo and Juliet. I’ve seen so many different versions of that, I’ve become kind of sick of it.

When I saw the poster for the live showing of Coriolanus at my cinema, I immediately decided I wanted to see it. And that decision was primarily based on one factor – Tom Hiddleston. And only partly because the poster showed him half-naked.

I missed the original showing of this, because I was working at the time. But when I saw that there were further showings, I decided a couple of weeks in advance that I was going to see this particular showing.

When I was sitting in the cinema, waiting, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I saw a lot of plays when I was younger, but the last one was more than a couple of years ago and it was the Anne Boleyn play at the Globe Theatre in London. I’ve noticed that there are a lot of different styles of plays, as well as ways plays are performed.

When the opening scene of Coriolanus began, my first thought was that the setting came across as a bit low-budget. My second was that the people of the city had accents that seemed quite obviously London. And the third was that a lot of the costumes were really modern.

With those initial thoughts in my mind, I was half-expecting not to really enjoy this play so much. By the end, though, that initial impression was turned on its head.

The strongest thing about this play, in my opinion, was the skill of the actors. Despite the fact that, in comparison to a film, the amount of actors was fairly small, the crowd scenes came across really well – especially when they were all shouting at Coriolanus. Some of the language made it a little difficult to understand what was going on (I’ve never been that good with Shakespearean quotes), but I have to say, the facial expressions of the actors made it all come across really well.

During the fight scene, what really occurred to me was the fact that, unlike during a film, the play didn’t rely on any special effects, stunt doubles, etc. I really feel that a lot of skill came through with this play.

There were a few scenes that were particularly gruesome. I felt that came across really well, despite being in real-time.

I won’t say much more, since I don’t want to give too much of the story away. I’m not sure this is a play I’d watch again, but it’s definitely one that I quite liked watching. I think it’s definitely worth seeing, particularly if you’re a fan of Shakespeare as it is.
