Kiss Me Dead

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I would, ideally, give this book 3.5 stars. The plot was really intriguing… and I really adored the front cover. It’s really nicely designed. And although reapers and angels aren’t unique concepts in fiction, I felt that the use of Giltine was really interesting, as was the whole history surrounding the reapers. I would have liked some more detail about their origins, though.

The switching between past and present wasn’t as confusing as I would have thought it would be. I couldn’t really believe in the romance/s, though. There wasn’t enough interaction between the characters to make me believe in the love they had for each other.

I did like both Christian and Brooke as characters. Their interactions were good, but because there was so much going on in the rest of the book, I didn’t think that there was enough about how their relationship worked together. It just seemed based on what they looked like, since they didn’t actually seem to spend any time getting to know each other beforehand.

I did think William was an interesting character and I’d like to see more of him and Abby. I wasn’t as keen on Abby as a character and I did wonder about the fact that her boss seemed completely non-existent, considering how bad her customer service skills were.

I did find Giltine a really intriguing character as well. Although she was technically the bad guy, I could see some parts of her that were more well-rounded and it would have been nice to see more of her personality and history explored.

I’m not sure I’d read a sequel to this book. I’d like more time spent on developing the romance, rather than it just happening like that. It was entertaining and quick to read, though.

Cortez The Road to Purification

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I did find the blurb of this book quite intriguing. A lot of my knowledge about the Aztecs and their conquering by the Spanish comes from reading Horrible Histories books, so I was intrigued to see a novel detailing the Spanish invasion.

I have to say, however, I did find this book a bit disjointed at times. The beginning of this book was a bit confusing, since I was left unsure about whether this book was meant to be a memoir written by the character talking to Cortez, or if it was something entirely different. And the sudden skip forward in time was extremely confusing, too.

As the book went on, I found it quite interesting to have bits and pieces of the knowledge I had about the Aztec community awakened. There were times that this book felt more like a reporting of the facts, though, rather than a glimpse into the possible workings of the mind of a historical figure.

There were some quite gruesome moments in this book and atrocities carried out on both sides in the war. I don’t know if it was the author’s intention, but the harsh realities of the war (and the way the Aztecs were ultimately defeated) was shown quite vividly.

I found it easier to get into the book later on, as the narrative settled down. It was confusing to be suddenly thrown into the future, for what seemed to be no proper reason, as the time mentioned wasn’t then covered.

I’m not sure there was anyone ‘likable’ in this book. It was good to see glimpses of other historical figures as well as Cortez and also to have some insight into the culture of the different peoples. The viciousness came through really well… but I really struggled to find any way to relate to the characters and there were several moments I got confused about the different people.

I don’t think I’d read a sequel to this book, unless perhaps it’s somewhat less disjointed and easier to follow. There was a lot of nice imagery used… I just kind of struggled with it at times.

Infected Click Your Poison 1

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

From a very early age, I remember I really liked Choose Your Own Adventure books. I used to look in charity shops for different ones. So when I had the opportunity to request a copy of a zombie interactive book… I jumped at the chance.

I found this book a really entertaining, engaging read. I particularly liked the opportunity to get bitten and continue on as a zombie. I also really liked the fact that there was some overlap with the different storylines. For instance, when you get bitten, you can go to places you as a non-zombie can go.

I was a little bit disappointed by the fact that the player-character wasn’t as explored as he could have been. There was very little about the personal life and I would have liked a bit more background. I can understand why the author didn’t go into a lot of detail… but I think it would have added more to the storyline to know the details.

Out of the three totally different storylines, I think I liked the one with Lucas and Rosie the best. There was more of a sense of camaraderie in that group than in Cooper’s. I think Lucas and Rosie were much more honourable characters… not to mention that Cooper’s group did make a couple of silly mistakes.

Although I know it’s nearly impossible to account for every variable, there were some parts where I thought that knowledge I as a reader would have gained was ignored. There was also at least one occasion where two different choices led to the exact same page.

When it came to playing a zombie, it was interesting to see the kind of thoughts going through its mind. On the other side, it seemed like the zombies were completely mindless… but there was as least some cognitive processes, at least when it came to getting food.

I would definitely be interested in reading the other book/s in this series at some point in the future. If you like zombie fiction and like books that give you some form of control over the story, I would definitely recommend this book as being entertaining and well-written.

GONE TOO FAR

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I was a bit surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I wasn’t sure I would like reading it all that much, but the blurb sounded really intriguing, so I was happy to receive a free copy as part of the blog tour.

I found Piper to be quite an interesting character. She was really easy to relate to and I felt the author did a good job of showing what the school ennvironment was like for her and the other students.

I did have some moments of confusion. There were a couple of scenes where time periods were randomly skipped over. And I couldn’t remember which part of the cliques Connor belonged to.

I felt that Nick was a particularly strong character through the course of the book. It was nice that he wasn’t all about the romance, even though he did pursue Piper quite enthusiastically after a while. And I was a bit confused about why it suddenly came out then, too. Still, the scene where he gives her the Christmas present was a particularly sweet one.

I liked that everything started with a particular tragedy. I thought it made sense that Piper would want to make a difference and that that was how it all started. It was easy for things to snowball out of proportion, I think.

I also liked that the author made it clear that the popular kids weren’t just about one thing that defined them. There were a couple who I didn’t see any redeeming qualities in, but I think that was more because they weren’t shown in great detail. I actually found myself liking Tate more by the end of the book.

It was good that Piper did make mistakes. I felt those mistakes made her human. There were certain things that managed to surprise me through the course of the book, but those did make sense. I liked the plot and the characters and I would read more books by this author in the future.

Chapter One

Late. So late. I slam the car door behind me and race across the parking lot. My hair is tangled in the strap of my messenger bag, my shoes are untied, and I have no idea how I’m going to get to my locker without getting caught. I have to try because I need those chemistry notes.Technically I needed them last night when I’d actually had the time to study for my midterm, but I didn’t think it was a big deal. I know the materials and I figured I could do a little last-minute cramming during first period homeroom. It was a decent plan until my phone battery died, taking my morning alarm down with it. Now I’ll be lucky to catch the last ten minutes of first period.I hop the curb and slow as I slide into the shadow of the ancient brick school. It’s probably not classy to barrel through the door like an escaped convict. Of course, it probably wasn’t classy flying into the parking lot doing Mach 2 either.I check my barely charged phone for the time as I climb the first step. My foot slips on something halfway up the stairs. It’s like hitting a patch of ice. I lunge gor the handrail and jerk myself upright, glaring down at the thing that tripped me –a dropped notebook.Nothing special. It’s a plain, spiral-bound pad, the kind you can get at the drugstore for less than a buck. Pretty much worthless, excerpt I know it’s probably chock-full of notes. Notes seomone will need during midterm week.

Oh, fine.

I snatch the notebook off the steps and shove it into my bag. Lost and Found is going to have to wait though. It’s in the student store, which is on the opposite side of the school.

Kisses After Dark

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

It was really good to return to Gansett Island. I’ve been passing these books onto my sister to read, since she likes romance as much as I do, and I’m sure she’ll be reading this book at some point during the next several months.

There were some darker parts to this book in comparison to the others. The characters had to deal with a couple of really major issues and I felt that the author did a really good job of showing the fallout of what happened with Mac and Maddie and how it affected not only them, but the rest of their extended family.

I’ve probably mentioned before that I really like how this series focuses on the other characters and relationships, as well as just the main couple in this book. I did notice that there was a lot of pregnancy going on in the book. It was nice to see the couples progressing with their relationship, but it almost seemed like every one had to have a baby, or be pregnant.

I liked the themes of family that ran through this book. I especially like how close Big Mac is with his children and surrogate children. There’s a real sense of love and care throughout this book and even though I haven’t read all of the books in this series, I really liked reading about all of the other couples. There were some really emotional scenes in this book and I felt really able to connect to the characters.

I also liked the whole island life and how everyone knows what everyone else is getting up to. Shane and Katie were really good together and it was good how they both had issues they needed to deal with. There were scenes where I hurt for both of them… and others where I found myself cheering them on. Silently, of course.

I definitely hope to read the other books in this series at some point in the future. I have the first book downloaded to my Kindle, but as well as that, I really want to read Grant and Stephanie’s book. Learning more about her relationship with her stepfather made me want to see more of her past and how she and Grant came together.

The Woman in Black Angel of Death

(This review may contain spoilers).

I was quite glad to see that this film was rated a fifteen, given the subject matter, in comparison to the first film. It was interesting to see another group of people have to deal with the vengeful ghost and I liked Eve’s budding relationship with Harry.

There wasn’t much mystery in this film surrounding the woman in black, but it was interesting to learn more about Eve’s past during the course of the film. It was disappointing that the voice actress for the first film, who read Jennet’s letter, didn’t seem to be the same one for this film.

I would have liked some reference to the events of the first film, since it’s unlikely the deaths of so many children wouldn’t have been reported, or known about. I only recognised one of the actors in the film and that was the one playing the boy Tom. Although I thought they did well in the roles, only a couple of other children apart from Edward had developed characters. The others just seemed to be there for the sake of it.

The film did do a good job of showing the atmosphere of the time the film was set in. There were some really creepy moments, but I saw most of those coming. I did like the ending, but I could have done without the obligatory scare setting it up for a potential sequel.

Ninja Assassin

(This review may contain spoilers).

This is another film I watched originally at the cinema… and wasn’t really expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. There was a lot of bloody gore and violence in this movie, but I found myself really empathising with the characters and although there were certain scenes that made me cringe, I was pulled into the plot almost from the start.

There’s something quite fascinating about ninjas… at least in my opinion. I like the air of mystery that comes from not being able to see all of someone’s face. And one of the things I liked about this film was that it had the good guy going against the bad guy kind of plot.

Although the flashbacks to Raizou’s past were particularly disturbing, I felt that they did really well at showing why he acted the way he did in the present. I liked how he connected to Mika and I was also particularly intrigued by the sense of calm he exuded, even while tied up.

The fight scenes in this film, while really gory, were very well-orchestrated, I felt. There were also some quite creepy moments in this film, with the ninjas whispering while they stuck to the shadows.

I did feel there were some nice elements of foreshadowing during this film. There wasn’t a lot of mystery, but I managed to connect emotionally to the characters and I cared about what happened to them. There was probably a lot that wasn’t very realistic about this film… but I personally felt it was really entertaining and a well-made film. I’d say I’d watch a sequel, but most of the time, sequels aren’t as good as the first film. But it would be nice to see where the characters go next.

The Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok Volume 1

The Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok 1

(This review may contain spoilers).

As much as I love manga books and Norse mythology, I have a few mixed feelings about this book. I’m not sure if this a second series, or just that the book started in the middle of the story.

I liked the artwork, but I did feel that some of the characters looked a bit too much like each other. I was disappointed not to see much of Loki being an actual detective, though I did really like Fenrir in the book. I was confused about who was involved in the storyline and why.

Most manga books I’ve read are fairly lighthearted, but this did potentially cross into the realm of silly a couple of times. The storyline with Spica in the book was really interesting, but I was left completely confused about how they’d figured out her identity… and why she’d started off trying to kill Loki.

Although the Norse myths are alluded to in this book – at least some of them – it’s not very clear how they relate to the characters in this book. For instance, Fenrir isn’t chained… but it’s stated that he was at one stage; just not how he escaped. (Having said that, Fenrir is quite cute).

The plot of the second chapter in this was really intriguing, but I felt it was missing something by the end. There wasn’t much of a mystery.

It was interesting to see the Norse gods in the Japanese culture and I would have liked to see more details about why Loki was de-aged and why everyone else was around him. The plot of the story was a really intriguing one, but I would have liked a bit more background to everything.

Pavement Thoughts of a Serial Killer

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

This is yet another book I have some very mixed feelings about. The concept of it was quite an intriguing one and there were some really disturbing scenes in this book… but at the same time, I felt there were parts of the book that seemed to drag quite a bit.

I wasn’t entirely sure when this book was set. There were references to the modern times, but there were also some suggestions that it was set at some point in the future.

The dreams that the main characters has are truly disturbing. I wasn’t expecting half of the contents of the main character’s dreams.

I can’t really say that I liked the main character. It was interesting to see the kinds of things that went on in his mind and how he viewed other people. I did notice a few contradictions, though – like when he says he doesn’t have the money to use his phone to call people, but then uses it later. And where he has the money to buy his equipment to kill people.

I was quite confused by the ending. It didn’t really make things very clear. The glimpses into the main character’s mind were interesting… but having reached the end of the book, I’m a bit unnerved having been stuck in the head of a character so mentally disturbed. I don’t think I’d read a sequel to this book… though the fact that it had an age rating was quite amusing.

I might check out other books by this author, depending on the genre and what the book is about.

This greeting is probably not valid for some countries, but it’s past midnight over here, so it is now technically the New Year in the UK, at least.

I don’t really have much planned by way of a New Year’s celebration, but my New Year’s resolution about Ice Warriors still stands. The year I wrote the first draft of Key of Midgard, I also did NaNoWriMo and somehow ended up with two first drafts of two different novels. A Dying Breed is probably going to be the next one I rework, though.

Anyway, NaNoWriMo has a particular group of forums where artists can offer their services in creating front covers and drawing characters. I’d like to share some of those covers and drawings on here, probably twice a week, but the exact day will vary depending on what else is going on.

I don’t have the details of the people who created the works of art for me, but full credit goes to the original creators. And here’s the first front cover for people here to view, using the pen name I requested rather than my real name:
