Captain America Winter Soldier Dossier Edition

(This review may contain spoilers).

This comic book took me a little longer to read, due to the sheer length of it, but I still found myself reading it avidly… especially having seen the movie version of this arc.

I’ve only been dipping into the Marvel world. I couldn’t say I know every little bit of information about the universe, so I’m not sure how much of the pre-existing canon is contradicted by this particular arc. At the same time, I didn’t have many pre-conceptions, so I felt like I was getting to know Bucky from the start in this dossier.

It was good to have the opportunity to see glimpses into Bucky’s and Cap’s pasts and just how dark what they were supposed to do was. It was good to see that there was a lot of conflict in what they needed to do… though I was surprised to see just how dark Bucky’s actions were.

I really liked seeing Steve interacting with his fellow superheroes, such as Namor and the Torches, both in the past and in the present. It was good to see what his friendship was like with Bucky and how much his partner’s death had affected him.

I really liked seeing Steve interacting with other members of SHIELD… especially Fury and Agent Thirteen, though I was a bit confused by Steve’s exact relationship to Fury. There was quite a bit of tension between Steve and Sharon that came across really well.

I felt that this comic book was much darker than many of the others. I thought it was interesting to see how Jack was affected by the breakdown of the supersoldier serum. I did also feel sorry for him… even though the ending of that particular segment answered certain questions that made it clear Jack had fallen far.

I really liked being able to see Sam and Tony in this and in particular the scene where Steve asks Tony for a jet… and it’s clear their friendship is such that he can do that. And it was good to see them fighting alongside each other.

I thought it was good to see how Steve was torn about what to do about the Winter Soldier. The ending was something of a cliffhanger, but it was a proper ending… and it did make me want to read more about these characters soon.

Son of No One

(This review may contain spoilers).

It’s been a little while since I picked up any of the Dark-Hunter novels, but despite having become somewhat disillusioned with the series, I still really enjoy reading them. So when I got this (and the following book in the series) for Christmas, I was really excited.

I actually found this book a lot more readable than the other more recent ones. While there were still a lot of cliches (to the point of actually considering a drinking game), I liked being able to meet many of the characters I’d seen before… and get to know entirely new ones.

I did think Josette was a little too similar to Amanda… which, considering they were cousins, did make sense. I was intrigued by her meeting with Cadegun and although there was the instant attraction, it was nice to have the two of them get the chance to get to know each other.

Cadegun did have the tortured past and inability to trust that’s so prevalent in the Dark-Hunter series. He also climbed up into the ridiculously over-powered being that seems to happen with every hero of the Dark-Hunter series. But at least he didn’t spend half the book calling humans ‘boy’ and it was such a relief to see the ‘people in hell want ice water’ line missing.

There was a… very interesting gender-swap moment in this book. It did make me cringe, but I liked the fact that there were still difficulties in the different bodies. It wasn’t easy on either of them and I did like that.

I did also like Thorn’s connection to Cadegun, though I did get confused when he was referred to by two different names within the same page. It was a refreshing change to see that Cadegun’s brother wasn’t evil the same way certain other brothers were portrayed.

Speaking of… I really really liked seeing Acheron and Styxx in this, although it still garnered an eye-roll with Acheron being described as really attractive. I really enjoyed seeing Simi… she’s probably my favourite character overall. And Artemis voiced some things I really would have liked to see explored further.

I hope this book marks a change to the series and isn’t a one-off… because while I adore the Dark-Hunter series, up till Styxx’s book, the later ones read as torture-porn. But I will be reading Dragonbane.

The Book of Life

The Book of Life

(This review may contain spoilers).

I saw this film advertised at the cinema originally, but although I was intrigued by the trailer, it wasn’t until today (well, yesterday) that I managed to sit down and watch this with my sister (sorta) and my niece.

I found the concept of the three realms a really interesting one. The idea of the rulers of two of the realms having a wager regarding three people from the realm of the living was a really interesting one… although I was a bit hard-pressed to figure out exactly why it was those three people that Xibalba and La Muerte were drawn to.

Although I’m far from a fan of love triangles, I did like the fact that, although it was obvious who the viewers should be rooting for Maria to end up with, both Manolo and Joaquin were interesting characters with good and bad things about them. It was also interesting to see how each was affected by their father.

I wasn’t sure I liked Maria all that much. She came across as quite shallow at times… though, as a child, I did think she was quite sweet. And the three children together were adorable.

The narration throughout the movie worked really well and added something of an air of mystery as to whether the story was just that… or real. That question was answered in a really cool way by the end, though. And I liked the feel of mythology about this movie.

I wouldn’t say there was much in the way of humour in this movie, although there were a lot of engaging scenes. Manolo’s grandmother and grandfather were particularly amusing… and it was good to see how they celebrated the day of the dead.

I found the animation to work really well, although it did give all of the realms, including that of the living, an ‘otherworldly’ feel. There were a lot of really nice instances of great imagery and I felt the voice actors did a good job of allowing emotion to come through. The characters were interesting and had more depth to them than first appeared and I did enjoy watching this. I would probably watch this again in the future.

Daddy's Home

(This review may contain spoilers).

This movie was one I wasn’t too fussed about seeing. Although it looked amusing from the trailers, I was content to wait to see it. But having had the chance to go and see the movie today, with my brother, sister and niece, I decided to go.

I did find the movie amusing in places. Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell are both actors I’ve seen in different roles and it was cool to see them in a movie together.

I had quite a lot of sympathy for Brad, but it was really good to see the film portraying the way Megan and Dylan viewed their stepfather. It was sweet to see something of acceptance from the children… at least until their biological father showed up.

I thought Dusty was an amusing character, but it was kind of sad how Dylan and Megan became ammunition for the feud between Dusty and Brad. I wasn’t especially keen on Sara for some of the film. I felt that she’d put Brad into quite a bad position.

I felt that Griff was a bit of a random character. I wasn’t sure if Dusty had known him before and there was very little detail about his past. He really only seemed to be there to create tension between the two of them.

There were some really quite disturbing scenes in this movie and I did feel like a lot of the humour was shown in the preview. There were other actors I recognised as well… but I did find it a bit weird that so many of the other characters seemed to know Dusty. I actually found it really hard to know anything about him. There were hints of what he really did, but it would have been good to see those hints expanded upon.

I thought that the ending was good and left the movie open for a sequel. I doubt I’ll watch this again any time soon, but it was an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours.

Descendants

(This review may contain spoilers).

My niece has been really wanting to see this movie, so I watched it today with her and found myself enjoying it quite a bit.

Although the idea of the kids from fairytale characters interacting with each other isn’t a unique idea, I thought that the way it was handled was. It was easy to feel sympathy for Mal, Evie, Jay and Carlos, growing up on a small island closed off from everywhere else. Of course, it was a bit disappointing that the villains were all stereotypical, but the teenagers were interesting in the way they gravitated away from taking after what their parents did.

It was good to see all of them dealing with normal classes. I did have a strong dislike for Aubrey’s character. I felt that many of the hereos’ kids actually came across as more villainous. I would have liked more development of some of the minor characters… but I thought Carlos was sweet and especially with Dude.

There were some nice songs in this movie, although the Ridiculous one was a little bit cringeworthy. While I did like Mal’s character, I actually found Evie to be more interesting. It was good that she was shown to be intelligent… but I would have liked to see more instances of that.

I thought it was interesting to see how Auroden had more or less done away with magic, though I was confused about the time period. Presumably, it was set in a parallel universe… but it’s not made very clear. I also felt that some of the jobs didn’t make a lot of sense; such as Snow White being a news reporter.

I did recognise a few actors in this movie and it was nice to see them working in this. I would have liked to see the other parent with the four villain kids, since they presumably didn’t just come from their mother/father.

I did find this movie to be entertaining, even though it was fairly stereotypical and didn’t really challenge me as a viewer. Still, I probably wouldn’t mind watching it again.

Penelope

(This review may contain spoilers).

I watched this movie originally when it was out in cinemas, but only rewatched it today.

It was nice to see that this movie had a more modern feel to it… though it wasn’t very clear about what time period the film was set in or whereabouts the film was set.

I felt a lot of sympathy for Penelope… especially with the way her mother saw her as ugly. The relationship between her and her father was a bit nicer… and I felt some sympathy for him, since he was clearly a hen-pecked husband.

It was interesting that this movie was narrated by Penelope. There was a bit of humour at the beginning and although I did feel that Penelope’s mother was a bit over the top, I felt it fit with the world and her character.

It was a bit surprising that every single potential suitor reacted the same way. While an argument could be made for them reacting out of shock, it would have been good to see some slightly different reactions.

I would have liked to see Penelope interacting with Jake and Wanda. It was difficult to see what kind of relationship she had with them, though I did like the fact that Penelope was really naive and unsure about the world when she managed to go outside.

I really liked that Penelope and Max had a chance to get to know each other. There was a lot of humorous banter between them… but also some really sweet moments. I also really liked the friendships that formed between Penelope and the people outside her home. There were a couple of nice montages and also some really nice music… though I think I viewed ‘You Are My Sunshine’ completely differently after this movie.

I liked the ending of this movie and although it isn’t perfect, it is a really good, entertaining movie with a really sweet romance and a nice ending. It’s a film I like seeing again.

Avengers: Scarlet Witch

Avengers Scarlet Witch

(This review may contain spoilers).

Since the Scarlet Witch is probably one of my favourite members of the Marvel comic verse, I was really happy to receive this comic book as a present.

I thought there was a really good variety of different storylines from Wanda’s storyline. I liked seeing her interacting with different members of the Avengers and it was nice to see her with her husband… even if only for a moment or two.

I found Wanda’s powers to be really intriguing and I felt really bad for the fact that she was being manipulated and used by so many. The first set of comics were interesting because they showed a completely different look to her. I wasn’t sure I liked her with the shorter hair and different clothing… but it was really good to see her learning to defend herself and to learn a bit more about what it meant for her to be a Nexi.

I liked seeing Wanda interacting with Doctor Strange. It was nice to see that the two of them were working together, but that that comic had a different, more sympathetic ending. I couldn’t help feeling sorry for the creature that had been accidentally released.

It was good to get some details about the events that were referenced in the comic books. It was interesting to see Melinda and John together. While I would have liked to see more of their history, it was nice that the love between the two of them was clearly real. And it was also good to see Wanda with her children; trying to protect them and also thinking about how her husband viewed her.

I also liked the opportunity to see Wanda interacting with her ancestor, Red Lucy. I felt really bad for Wanda and how she was viewed by other people. It was pretty terrible to see her treated badly by someone who assumed the worst of mutants.

I was a bit confused by the comic where Wanda is pulled into the digital world. I found that artwork difficult to be drawn into. The final two comics, however, were really intriguing. It was nice to see something of Wanda’s childhood… and although I had read the final comic before, it was good to read again.

This has definitely made me interested in reading more comic books involving Wanda in the future.

Krampus: The Three Sisters

Krampus The Three Sisters

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I found this book to be quite an intriguing read. It managed to draw me into the world really easily and I thought Maggie was a really intriguing character. She was a good mix of chidlike innocence and at just the right age to be ‘growing up’.

I did get a bit confused by the amount of different characters. I would have liked to see more of Maggie’s relationships with her siblings and her cousins. I found it very difficult to empathise with many of the minor characters, since I felt that they were just introduced through a listing off of the names and attributes.

I did think that the usage of the poem ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas’ was a really interesting concept and did a good job of linking in to the other world.

I felt that the dream of St. Nicholas falling from the roof did a really good job of showing elements of tension right from the beginning.

It was interesting to see something of a contrast between the world Maggie inhabited and the world she found herself in. I was a bit disappointed by the whole love-triangle-thing with Maggie, Catherine and Henry, though. I thought Catherine came across as very much ‘so pretty it’s almost a curse’. I did like the fact that she came across as a strong character even so, despite the fact that I didn’t find her as interesting as Maggie.

I did like being able to learn more about their families, even though I did find some of the background a bit confusing. It was also good to meet the Foundlings… but I didn’t really know all of them, either, even though I thought the timing part was really interesting.

I was a bit disappointed that Krampus didn’t really show up until much later, but I was intrigued by what was going on in the house and I would like to know if my theory about Krampus is correct. I probably would read the other book/s in this series at some point in the future, since I would like to see more of Maggie especially… but I’d also like to get to know other members of her family.

Doctor Who Christmas Special 2015

(This review may contain spoilers).

Although I haven’t been as keen on this particular Doctor, I did like the fact that this Christmas special had River Song appear in it… though her apparent inability to recognise the Doctor was a bit disconcerting. It was, however, amusing to see the Doctor’s reactions to River Song being married.

There wasn’t much in the way of a Christmas theme to this, but it was good to see River Song act a bit more emotionally. I did like the way she and the Doctor played off each other… and it was cool to see references made to the Doctor’s previous faces.

Some of the aliens were a bit disturbing in this. Not so much the appearances, but the obsessive way some of them acted. I did like the fact that this episode tied up quite a few of the loose ends from the storyline involving River Song and the Doctor.

It was nice to see a slightly different version of the mechanical body storyline, although I did find some aspects of this episode incredibly disturbing. There was some action in this, but it was good to see more in the way of character development and in how this episode linked in with previous incarnations of the Doctor.

There were quite a few amusing moments in this episode and although there weren’t too many new major characters (even if the fish-alien creatures were a bit weird and disturbing), I did recognise one of the other actors and it was interesting to see how he played a different role to what I was used to.

I’m still not sure I’ll watch the next series of Doctor Who. This one is something I’m struggling to find enough to draw me in during the episodes and there are very few characters I can empathise with. Although it was good to see River Song again (she’s an awesome character), I’m worried she won’t make another appearance.

Hands w text

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I thought the plot of this book sounded really intriguing, so when I was given the opportunity to read this book as part of a blog tour, I did jump at the chance.

It was interesting to see the aftermath of what had been the consequences of a drunk driver. I’m not sure I really liked Jonathan’s character, although I could understand why Amanda tried to stick by him and believe in him… even though I really didn’t think that he was helping himself.

I did get a bit confused by the flashbacks/memories within the narration. There were several occasions where I thought that the memory was part of the present day and it did throw me out of the story for a second or two.

I thought that the first person perspective worked really well and I was glad to see the author stick with only Amanda’s POV. I did notice a couple of instances where the book slipped into past tense, which was a little distracting.

I felt a lot of sympathy for Graham in this book, since he did seem to really care about Amanda. I couldn’t actually believe in any feelings she might have had for him, though… Henry with Imogen seemed more natural, even though Henry and Amanda clearly had chemistry when they were together.

I thought it was interesting to see the relationship Amanda and Jonathan had with their parents. There were a few moments where I smiled at the descriptions of ‘Standard Dad’… but I felt their Dad made more of an effort than their Mom did. Their Mom did irritate me quite a bit.

I liked seeing Amanda interacting with Dawn through text and I could sense how difficult it was for Amanda to not have her best friend around. I did also feel a lot of sympathy for Sutton… but virtually none for Jonathan, who didn’t seem to have learned anything. The strongest aspect in this book, I felt, was Amanda’s fledgling relationship with her Dad.

I probably would read more books by this author in the future… potentially a sequel to this book, if it focused more on family than romance.
