Golem

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

While I was originally drawn to this comic book because of the cover and the blurb, I did actually find this quite hard to follow. I felt that I was only seeing part of the story and that I’d missed the whole world before the events of the plot took place.

While there were some good moments of tension in this comic book, I found there was a lack of emotional connection to any of the characters. I had, in fact, missed quite a few of the apparent twists, due to a lack of different characters being shown enough that I could differentiate them from each other.

I thought that the pain ray was an interesting idea, but I really had no idea of how it worked, or how one character seemed immune to it. According to the explanation at the end, there were characters whose roles corresponded to the zodiac signs… but I think that would have been better shown by expanding the world and the characters and making more than just one comic book. When I had to leave off reading, I wasn’t able to seamlessly slip back into the world and it was harder to pick up.

There were some nice artistic styles, though I felt there were a few random portraits that could have been placed in at the end, rather than having the more Gothic feel slap in the middle of the storyline.

I didn’t feel there was much in the way of foreshadowing and by the end of the book, I really didn’t understand what had happened. The storyline had had a lot of potential, but I felt that all fell by the wayside. While I do think there should be a sequel to this comic book, I don’t think it would be one I personally would read unless it was expanded upon. Even when the characters were hurt, I didn’t know enough about them to care… and I honestly felt that the profiles at the end shouldn’t have been necessary if the characters themselves had been developed better. In this instance, I felt the comic book suffered from too many characters.

Reckoning

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I did find this book to be quite an intriguing read. Although I wasn’t especially keen on Silver having something that made her stand out so much, since it raised something of a red flag to me, I was able to connect emotionally to her as a character and I did care about what was happening to her.

While it was good to get bits and pieces of the world Silver and the other characters were a part of, I felt that many of the secondary characters… in particular quite a few of the fellow Offerings… weren’t really expanded or developed. I would have liked to know more than just a few of them, as I didn’t actually care about some of them enough that, when something happened, it didn’t affect me emotionally.

It was interesting to get some details of life in the castle and how everyone had to keep their heads down. The entire time in the castle put me completely on edge… but given there was very little detail about the King before Silver and the other characters went to the castle, I didn’t find his behaviour as a shock due to having envisioned him as a completely different person to who it turned out he was.

I actually found Rush to be quite an interesting character and I would have liked to see more of him… as well as the other Offerings. I was a bit disappointed that so much time was glossed over, as I didn’t get a chance to learn all that much about Imrin… or believe in the feelings the two of them apparently had for each other.

There were a lot of good elements of tension and I did feel a lot of sympathy for the Offerings. I did feel there were some links to the Hunger Games… but although there were scenes that reminded me of those books, I thought that the storyline was unique enough to keep me reading throughout and although I couldn’t form emotional connections to most of the secondary characters, it was easy to care about Silver… and what might happen to her family while she’s forced to live in the castle.

I do have the second and third books on my Kindle… which is good, because I’m looking forward to reading to the end and finding out what will happen to the characters.

Cargo (The Reservation Trilogy, #1)

by Jen Castleberry

Release Date: January 17th 2016

Genre: Young Adult

Rate: 3 out of 5 stars

Synopsis:
The earth has been reduced to a singular continent, governed by extra-terrestrials, collapsed by nuclear weapons residue and wracked with radiation sickness. Only one viable territory remains, and access there is restricted by a mysterious selection process. Everyone hopes to be chosen for transport. Everyone but Cass.
Seventeen year old Cassidy Hartinger has spent the past eleven years living in a government-maintained bunker. She should be thrilled when a handsome transporter arrives to take her to the Reservation. So why does she feel like he’s dragging her, kicking and screaming, straight into the anti-paradise?
Faced with gun-wielding survivalists and elemental catastrophes, will Cass make it more than two steps out of the bunker? Will her journey to peace and safety in the Reservation turn out to be the most perilous thing she’s encountered so far?

Fast-paced action and a tumultuous teenage romance will keep readers begging for more installments of The Reservation Trilogy!

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

When I saw the blurb for this book originally, I found myself quite intrigued… but I did find it a bit hard to get through the prologue. I felt it could have been expanded upon, to give me a better idea of what the world was like.

Once Cassidy left the bunker with Nathan, there was more in the way of tension. While I was kind of confused about why Nars was following them, due to his actions later on, it was good to see some elements of tension… and I especially liked the fact that Cassidy didn’t forget about her home and her friends, even though I did think that Nars seemed to forget about it all very quickly… and I found him much harder to understand than Cassidy.

I thought it was interesting to see a character who didn’t want to go to the Reservation as the main character in the book and to see that the life she led was a bit more sheltered… even though I wondered if she’d ever actually seen the church itself. I thought it was good to see how little she wanted to go to the Reservation… though I was confused about why it was such a big deal. I didn’t actually get to read much about what the Reservation seemed to be… and although Cassidy talked about others in the convent wanting to go there, I saw very little evidence of that.

I did like that, although she was stubborn and a bit of a spitfire, Cassidy wasn’t protected from the consequences of her actions, although I was a bit surprised that there was no attempt made to clean her infected hands. There were some good elements of tension in this book and I did like some of the descriptions, especially the ones set in the desert. It was interesting to see the differences in the place they ended up in… but I would have liked to see a bit more depth surrounding the secondary characters who lived there. And just what the society/culture was like.

I wasn’t especially keen on the budding relationship between Cassidy and Nathan, especially since I felt that Nathan didn’t really seem to care about Cassidy and I didn’t get the impression she really liked him. I didn’t think the epilogue fit… even though it did end on something of an intriguing cliffhanger.

I’m torn about whether I’d read the next books in this trilogy, since there was a lot that was intriguing about the world and the characters… I just felt that it was far too short and could have done with being expanded upon and allowing me to see more of the world and get to know more of the characters.

Interview

1) What originally inspired you to get into writing?

I’ve wanted to write since I was kid. In grade school, my neighbor and I would make up these elaborate spin-off stories around “The Nothing” from The Neverending Story. We thought they were so cool and tried typing them up on their DOS computer. Hahaha! I don’t know what ever happened with it. As I got older, I became self-conscience about what people would say, if they would think my imagination was too dark or childish, and I worried if my writing style would be criticized.
I found other outlets for my creativity with music, art, and dancing. With music, I started writing lyrics, and that turned me to poetry. Late in high school, I discovered my love for literature. I was enamored with words. There are only twenty-six letters in the English alphabet. Those 26 letters make over a million words in the English language. Can you imagine how many stories we can create with that?

I started reading non-stop. You know, besides children’s books, the first book I ever read was Stephen King’s The Eye of the Dragon (I was nine-years-old). My love for books only grew over the years. Finally, after becoming a stay-at-home-mother, I felt my creativity dying. I was losing myself and needed to find my way back. I came across an old journal that my husband and I would write letters to each other in when we were dating, and I thought, Wouldn’t this be quite the heirloom to pass down. I decided to write a book about our lives and how we met. It was going to be the ultimate love story.

Eh, who was I kidding? Nobody cared about how we met or the struggles we went through together! I trashed it after the first chapter and started writing from my heart.

I was tired of reading books and not finding the ultimate story that would live with me forever. So, I gave up searching and wrote the story I’ve been longing to read.

2) Where did the idea for Midnight Divine come from?

This is top secret information.

Years ago, I had a reoccurring night terror. Not just a nightmare, a night terror. I would wake up, pouring sweat, and screaming. I still have the dream every once in a while. I thought if I could write about it that it wouldn’t bother me anymore, and it hasn’t. My night terror is exactly the dream Ivy has in the beginning of Midnight Divine. The story grew from there.

3) Was there any particular character that you liked or felt able to relate to?

Oh, definitely! I laugh at myself for it, as I’m sure others will, but I see Ivy as my alter ego. She’s the hardened side of my personality, and the more I write about her, the more she likes to show herself. I have an enormous, creative brain. I’m versatile in many ways, like Ivy is. I play piano, guitar, flute, and saxophone. I like to paint, draw, sketch, and design. And I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty. I’ve been working on my own car since I was seventeen, and even dabbled in street racing during college. Of course, Ivy is a hell of a lot more proficient because she is who she is, and she’s a bad ass.

4) Was there any particular character that you disliked?

It’s hard to say that I dislike any of my characters. After all, I created them. Even the villains of Midnight Divine are intriguing and seductive in some way. If I had to pick one though, I may surprise you. It would have to be Michael. His character is mysterious, yet sagacious. Maybe it’s because we don’t get to know him as well as the other characters, but I feel like he’s hiding something. I say that because I’m still working on book two and three. The plot is ever-changing, ever-evolving. For Midnight Divine though, I can’t stand his evasive knowledge he feels is helping Ivy in some way.

5) Were there any scenes in particular that were particularly challenging or easy to write?

The easiest scenes to write included things I’m quite familiar with: racing, music, running, being bold.
The most challenging scenes to write were the fighting or training scenes. My husband thought I was ridiculous when I would ask him to let me try a move on him, so I could explain it better. I would ask him what could be realistically expected to happen during certain moves, and he gladly explained… all the while mocking me playfully. Hahaha! He’s the best.

Another challenge has been the amount of research it’s taken. I’ve always loved Angelic lore. When it came to Midnight Divine, I didn’t want to create my own lore. I wanted it as closely related to Angelic lore as possible. The information is colossal! It’s amazing the amount of crossovers there are between Angelic lore and mythology. I admire mythology as well, so my research sucked me in quite a bit. It may have inspired me to write a new series. Only time will tell, because The Helio Trilogy is a massive project for me, and I want to see it through to the end before starting a new series.

6) Have any of your characters been inspired by real people?

All but two of my characters have their own unique personalities. Besides Ivy being my alter ego (Yes, you can laugh. I do.), Alice is the only one based on someone I know. Well, I knew. She was a good friend I lost touch with. Time and distance pulled us apart, and after so many phone number changes and Facebook page renewals, I lost her. It breaks my heart to think about how much Alice and she are so alike. I miss her deeply and still look for her.

Physically, I based my characters from celebrities:
Ivy Harris – Jenna Dewan Tatum
Jack Roe – Kellan Lutz
Solas – A younger Jason Momoa.
Alice – Sophia Bush with four-foot long hair
Eric – A beefier Jonathan Rhys Meyers
Evelyn – Claire Holt
Beleth – Ian Somerhalder
Cassius – Chris Hemsworth
Beckett – Liam Hemsworth
Azrael – David Gandy
Trey – A younger Norman Reedus
Gideon – Matt Lanter
Lucien – Bill Skarsgård

7) Are there any particular authors or books that have inspired you?

There are so many authors that have inspired me to write and pursue the life-long dream of becoming an author. The moment I knew I would be publishing Midnight Divine, I reached out to each of them to thank them for unknowingly pushing me to achieve my goals. I think it’s important to tell people if and when they inspire you. You never know what they could be going through. Your message may help them to keep going in return. Plus, I think author’s should know how much their work is appreciated. After becoming an author myself, I understand how hard it is to put yourself out there with your work. Hearing from readers is amazing and gives you extra drive to keep going.

Some of my favorite authors and there books are over the last few years:

Amber Lynn Natusch – The Caged Series
Jamie McGuire – The Providence Trilogy
Amy Bartol – The Premonition Series
Karina Halle – The Experiment in Terror Series

8) Do you have any advice/pearls of wisdom for budding writers?

Outline your story first! Create character bios to help with consistency and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
When I started writing Midnight Divine, I was writing for myself and didn’t expect to publish. From the beginning, I wrote as some would write in their journals, yet my writing was complete imagination. I didn’t outline a single thing until I was about seventy percent from the end. It was then, I realized how much easier it made the writing process! I did everything out of order and paid for it dearly during the editing process. I didn’t create my character bios until about halfway through the process, and only because I kept forgetting little details.

Note to self: Won’t be making that mistake again!

That being said, when you feel stuck or don’t know how to express something in the most epic way you can, don’t be afraid to ask question. Go out. Discover. Research with your hands and not just your mind.
And always, always, always… keep a small journal and pen on you at ALL TIMES. These are your weapons. Don’t be caught without them. You’ll be surprised at how many times your surroundings will inspire a certain scene or dialogue. The prologue of book two for The Helio Trilogy was inspired by walking into Cracker Barrel during the holiday season! I took pictures and recorded video of the music playing in their store to remember the feeling I wanted to capture. I didn’t even write the prologue until four months later! But because I documented all that I could, I managed to capture that feeling and keep it with me until I was ready.
Be alert. You never know when inspiration will hit you like a train. It can come in the form of a song, a smell, a view, a word spoken in the distance. In these moments, you’ll become one with your characters and will be able to write them better.

My Review

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

While the plot of this book did sound a bit intriguing, I found it to be quite disappointing by the time I got to the end of this.

I felt that Larissa didn’t really have much depth to her. She didn’t have to work for anything… and I had no idea what the world was supposed to be like. I’d assumed that they were on modern-day Earth, but there seemed to be a lot of people who knew about the witches, to the point that the witch taxi service seemed to be Googable.

There was too much in the way of information dumping in this book. I found it very hard to believe in the friendship between Larissa, Chantelle and Jake… and it seemed completely strange that Jake would change his name, considering that there was nothing about them needing to keep so much secret… and, in fact, there was nothing about ‘normal’ humans and how they fit in with everything.

While the details about the Northern Lights having holes in them were intriguing, I was too busy trying to figure out why, if Larissa was known to be the Chosen One, no one bothered to give her any training until it was almost too late. What magic could she do? What were her strengths? Weaknesses? How did her friendship with Chantelle come into being?

While reading, I felt I was missing a huge part of this story. The different creatures were interesting, but there was nothing about the history. And I really didn’t understand the whole witches thing. There seemed to be different kinds of witches that weren’t really explored… not to mention the implications that the evil witches weren’t anything but caricatures. What were their pasts? What made a witch evil? By the end of the book, I had very little in the way of information or background.

The writing itself kept switching between past and present tense, as well as slipping out of first person. I found this book really quite disappointing and I don’t intend to read the next book/s in this series.

Star Trek: Manifest Destiny Volume One

Star Trek Manifest Destiny Volume One

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

This comic book was quite a short one, but I found it really intriguing to read. It was nice to see the crew from the newer Star Trek movies used and I thought it was good to see them on one of their first missions… though I couldn’t help but feel some sympathy for Bones, considering the people he helped deliver the baby for were actually quite ungrateful. (Though I have to say, I was quite confused about exactly what was going on with the delivery of the baby, as it didn’t seem to be a normal one at all).

I liked being able to see something of the Klingon culture at the beginning of the comic, even though there wasn’t a lot in the way of character development. It was interesting to see the conflicts between the leader and one of his ‘commanders’, but there wasn’t much in the way of character development of the others.

While it was good to see some of the characters I recognised in the landing party, I did notice that one of those who went with them was someone I didn’t know and had no emotional connection with… so when things went rough, I actually didn’t care about what happened to him. I did, however, like seeing that Bones was actually quite capable of defending himself… and he had quite a good one-liner towards the end of this comic segment.

I thought the artwork was good and it was nice that there was a lot of visual imagery and nothing in the way of exposition, even though it might have been good to see a bit more background as to what had happened beforehand.

The close-ups of the characters looked really good and I did think there was some tension in the comic. I found it quick and easy to read, even though I thought it was a bit too short and I would have liked to see a bit more of the Starfleet crew interacting with the Klingons.

I did want to see more of the storyline and it was a bit annoying that the comic ended on a cliffhanger. I’d like to read more issues of this in the future.

Blog Tour: Circle of Jinn

Circle of Jinn (Becoming Jinn #2)

by Lori Goldstein

Publisher: Feiwel and Friends

Release Date: May 17th 2016

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Mythology
Synopsis:
Being Jinn is Azra’s new reality. As she grants wishes under the watchful eye of the Afrit council, she remains torn between her two worlds—human and Jinn. Soon, secrets spill. Zars are broken. Humans become pawns. And rumors of an uprising become real as the Afrit’s reach extends beyond the underground world of Janna.
Straddling the line becomes impossible. Aware of her unique abilities, Azra must not just face but embrace her destiny. But when the role she must play and those she must protect expand to include a circle of Jinn greater than her own, Azra will be forced to risk everything. A risk that means there’s everything to lose, and at the same time, everything to gain—for herself and her entire Jinn race.
In this dramatic sequel to Becoming Jinn, Azra’s story comes to a heartfelt and thrilling conclusion.

1) What originally inspired you to get into writing?

I’ve always been in the world of the written word. I was a journalism major in college, and my early jobs had me doing a bit of everything: writing, design, and copyediting, but all in the nonfiction world. While I’ve been an avid reader since I was a kid, I never thought of myself as a creative writer. I was a newspaper girl. Then one day, my husband suggested I write something about being short. What’s frustrating to me is pretty funny to everyone else: like climbing a step stool to reach the clothes in my stackable washer/dryer…That might turn out to be the best idea my husband ever had because in writing that “memoir” of sorts, my creative side was coaxed out. I went from that to writing my first fiction manuscript, which, over three long, hard years, taught me how to actually use those creative juices to write a novel, and then came Azra and Becoming Jinn and the rest is history!

2) Where did the idea for the Becoming Jinn series come from?

The idea for Becoming Jinn started with a character. A few years ago, there was a horrible earthquake in Turkey. A mother and her infant daughter were pulled from the rubble and both miraculously survived. That baby’s name was Azra, which is my protagonist in the JINN series. It was hearing this beautiful name and picturing this world she would live in that sparked the idea of writing a book featuring Jinn, which for some reason I knew was the term for spirits derived from North African and Middle Eastern lore. A fan of contemporary, I decided to merge the fantasy elements with our modern world and drop Azra and her Jinn family into the world in which I live—quite literally into my home state of Massachusetts.

3) Was there any particular character that you liked or felt able to relate to? Conversely, was there any particular character that you disliked?

I’ll take Azra out of the equation here, because it’s hard not to say that your protagonist is the one you have the strongest affinity for. In Circle of Jinn, I love a new character by the name of Matin. He’s funny, he’s full of life, and writing him was a blast. This is going to sound corny but I love all the Jinn characters, and there’s not one that I dislike writing or diving into. The Jinn world has a large ensemble cast, and each one brings something to the table.

4) Were there any scenes in particular that were particularly challenging or easy to write?

This answer is the same for both books. The first pages are always the hardest to write. They must do so much heavy lifting: introduce a world, a character, a story problem, and in the case of Circle of Jinn, a recap. It’s a lot of pressure. In contrast, the endings of each were relatively easy for me to write. I had the vision of each from day one and they were executed exactly as I’d hoped.

5) Are there any particular authors or books that have inspired you?

I love books that incorpórate humor, as I try to do in the JINN series. Therefore, I’m particularly inspired by Rainbow Rowell. I love her books and she has a career I would love to aspire to.

6) Do you have any advice/pearls of wisdom for budding writers?

Don’t ignore how important revision is. That’s where 90% of the story is made. First, second drafts are messy. You are finding the story. You need to commit to revision to make it great. And when I say revision, I’m talking 5, 10, 15 read throughs and changes before it even lands before a critique partner’s eyes. Writing and revising is a huge time commitment and if you can’t do the revision, you will have a hard time sticking through to get a book published. It’s the harsh reality I had to learn!

My debut novel, the Young Adult Contemporary Fantasy Becoming Jinn, is a modern spin on the traditional tale of wish-granting genies. The sequel, Circle of Jinn, releases May 17, 2016 (Feiwel and Friends/Macmillan).

Title: Just in Time
Author: Regina Morris
Genre: Sweet Romance
Hosted by: Lady Amber’s PR
Blurb:
In the year 2192, the technology exists to send digital recorders back in time to witness history. The results are preserved via holographic images for the world to see.
Managing teams to record history can be stressful enough, but when the government tries to take possession of the proprietary technology from the privately held Historical Preservation Agency, dedicated historian, Caleb Hunter, must rely upon a well-connected, and sexy, developer at a government agency for help.
Can the two of them keep time travel in the hands of historians?
This is a short story. It is a prequel to the novel, “Time Historian.

“Hello, Janice?” the man said. “This is Caleb Hunter from the Historical Preservation Agency. I’m sorry for reaching you on your private line, but I couldn’t reach you at your office. How are you doing?”
She sat straighter in her seat and her tongue ran across her teeth searching for any stray breakfast bits. She raked one hand through her short blond hair as the other one brushed under her eyes clearing any runny mascara. “I’m doing great, Caleb. How are you doing?”
“I’m fine,” he said. “Do you have an estimated time of delivery for the HPA’s shipment of the safety valves we worked on together.”
She noticed a fake smile appeared on his face. She had spent hours on the com-center talking with the man; she recognized his real smile when she saw it. This wasn’t it.
“Is there something wrong with the order?” she said in a breathy and heady way.
Good Lord. She couldn’t stop herself from batting her eyelashes at him. How strong were her drinks? The waiter must have changed his recipe. Then again, Caleb was the most delicious man she had ever seen. How many times had she lingered on the com-unit just to talk to him? She had lost count.
“We never received our shipment from Bright Tech,” he said.
Well, hell. That was no longer her problem, now was it? “I’m sorry. You’ll have to contact Bright Tech for that information.”
He smiled wider now and she thought the smile looked even more fake. “I was hoping since we’re friends that you would give me the status real quick. Maybe I could pick up the shipment myself.”
She offered him a big smile, liking that he used the word friends. She assumed he tried to flirt with her, and he was doing a bad job of it. She was only on her third drink, and this conversation seemed a bit odd to her. “I’m sorry. I’m on furlough from Bright Tech. You can reach me at my office in three months. That is, if the furlough ends by then, or if I still have a job.”

Dragon Fall

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

While I was reading this book, I couldn’t help noticing that the main character, Aoife, had a whole slew of ‘fake curse words’… which were quite amusing, but they did actually detract a little bit from the story itself, especially during the scenes where Aoife and Kostya were having sex.

I did find the very first scene to be really intriguing and it did a good job of setting the scene… though I had a strong dislike of Bee right from the start. While I did question why Aoife wasn’t trying to get in touch with her brother and sister at times, I kind of found it understandable why she wasn’t working at it harder.

I haven’t read the books in the other series that takes place in the same world as this, but I did find this book very easy to follow. There were times I actually found myself laughing outright… particularly when it came to Jim. But Jim’s exchanges with Aoife were amusing as well.

I did think there was a little too much in the way of ‘spunky heroine’. While it was good to see that Aoife wasn’t perfect and that she did get captured… I did think some of her decisions were dangerous and naive. There were quite a few moments while reading this book that I wanted to reach into the pages and shake some sense into her.

I thought the idea of the curse was an especially intriguing one, though I didn’t really understand much about how the septs worked and why Kostya and Drake were presumably part of one. Still, I felt an awful lot of sympathy for them and cringed along when they were forced to hurt each other… and couldn’t even understand what each other were saying. (I don’t always get along with my siblings, but I would be devastated if I couldn’t talk to them).

While Jim was finding out bits of information, I would have liked some of that shown to me. Aoife didn’t seem that interested in asking questions. Or keeping herself safe. While I admired her ability to come up with some really random ‘fake curses’… I really couldn’t call her a capable planner.
