Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000026_00029]

(I received a free copy of this book from Fido Publishing, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I have to say, parts of this book made me think of the television show Charmed, though I think that’s only because episodes have been showing recently. The plot isn’t exactly the same, of course, but it’s like what I’ve said before with no plots being completely different. I really did enjoy reading this book.

This was a romance I could really get behind. There were enough details of the relationship between the characters before they started jumping into bed with each other to make the progression of the romance realistic.

I did like that the book wasn’t just about the romance. There was an interesting plot to it, too. I liked the use of the different types of creatures – and I was particularly fond of the elf characters, too. I would have liked to see more of them.

I really liked the concept of the mating bond. The telepathic thing isn’t really original, but the hair colouring certainly was. There was a lot of Alpha-male stuff going on, too, which is a bit creepy, but in some ways, also cute.

The descriptions in this book were really good as well. I could really see a lot of the scenes and places in my mind. I did notice a few errors, but nothing really major.

Although this book was the second in the series, I did find it really easy to understand and the characters were interesting and likable.

I’d definitely be interested in reading more books in this series in the future.

The Return

(This review may contain spoilers).

I originally saw Sarah Michelle Gellar in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Because I’d seen so much of her in that, I’ve never been that sure of how different I can see her when she appears in other things.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is a good actress, but in all of the things I’ve seen her in, I still see aspects of Buffy. Still, it’s not enough to ruin the film for me – and this was something that was particularly entertaining to watch.

As scary films go, this wasn’t really heavy on the creep factor. There were some nice surreal scenes and I did find it a bit confusing trying to guess what was real and what wasn’t.

There were a couple of jumpy moments in this, including a mirror scene. (Oddly enough, I didn’t react to that when I watched it in the cinema until the character reacted to it…)

The romance was somewhat confusing. I didn’t really find it a necessary point to the story – and the attraction didn’t seem entirely ‘real’ to me. I didn’t recognise any of the other actors, but none of them came across as ‘fake’ to me.

This is a more psychological horror and quite entertaining to watch, in my opinion. If you like these sorts of films, I would recommend it.

Horror Movie Cliches

So, I was inspired by the Evil Overlord List. (Look it up on Google. Some of those really made me laugh). And I wanted to compile a similar list for characters in horror movies.

So can anyone think of particular horror movie cliches? Once I get to 100, I’m going to post it on here… but currently, I only have 36.

If anyone has ideas, it would be great, thanks!

Shadow Pack

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I liked this book as a paranormal mystery, despite the obligatory inclusion of vampires.

The main character, Michael, was pretty interesting, but it took a long time to find out exactly what he was. The air of mystery is good, but it kind of felt like too much was being held back, in a way.

The other characters in the book were pretty interesting, including Ezekial. What I felt made this book more difficult to read, though, was the constant shifting of POV characters. They also changed paragraph by paragraph, which made it somewhat confusing to read this book.

The inclusion of different types of supernatural and other creatures was quite good. I would have liked to see more of them – particularly the elves.

Some parts of the book were quite cleverly done. One thing in particular is written in such a way that I assumed I knew the whole story, while it actually turns out to be something different.

I wasn’t too keen on the romance angle. I didn’t know enough about Sheila to really care about her as a character.

Some of the banter was amusing, but there was a little bit of telling rather than showing going on. I also felt that the characters didn’t act very intelligently at times. There were mistakes made by them/angles not seen that they should have been able to see.

The descriptions in the book were mostly good, with a few errors that I noticed, though nothing really major.

I’d probably read the next book in the series, to find out what happens, but I think it would benefit from having longer chapters and less POV characters – or at least stick to just one POV a chapter.

Serial Story: The Voice in the Dark Part Two

I should start at the beginning.

I was born in Greece. Not the Greece of today, overrun by tourists and all this new technology. No. I was born in what historians now call Ancient Greece. And the day of my birth wasn’t one of celebration. None of us ever had birthdays. There were too many of us for that – and, besides, we lived so long, none wanted to be reminded of our true age.

I remember bits and pieces of my childhood. My father was Pan, ruler of the forest. My mother was human. An Athenian princess. She went riding in the forest and my father was taken by her.

I never knew my mother. I was told that she was very beautiful. I don’t know if it saddened her to give me away. I don’t know if she ever thought of me after taking me to the forest and giving me to the nymphs there.

None of us knew our mothers, but many of us were half-sisters. There were also many foundlings among us; babies who had been abandoned in the woods, either as an offering to the gods or as a sacrifice. Or they were simply abandoned to die.

The other nymphs were my family. My father rarely came to visit. He was always more interested in pursuing his next conquest. I grew up with only the female nymphs around me for company. It was a long time before I saw a man – but not that long before I saw a woman. A goddess.

She came striding through the forest on a day that thunder rolled across the sky. We were hidden, of course, but it seemed as if her eyes could pierce through the shadows and trees to see each of our forms.

She was angry. Not the raging hot fury like that of a volcano, but an ice-cold rage that turned her gaze frosty. She was also very beautiful. More beautiful than any of my sister nymphs. When I saw her, I thought that Aphrodite herself had come to visit us.

And, because I was still a child, I spoke my thought out loud.

Immediately, all of my sisters hushed me. But my words stopped the cold woman where she stood. She turned and must have seen me peeking out at her, because she beckoned me closer.

I knew, even then, that no one disobeyed a summons from one of the gods. I approached and looked up at her, into eyes as blue as the ocean and at a proud face framed by a cloud of black hair. Remembering to be polite, I curtsied to her. “I didn’t mean to cause offence, my Lady.”

She smiled at me, but her smile was tinged with sadness. “You called me Aphrodite.”

I nodded, eager to please. “Yes, my Lady. You must be Aphrodite. You are too beautiful to be anyone else.”

She held a hand out to me and I drew nearer. “Sweet child,” she murmured.

Death Spiral

(I received this book for free from Poisoned Pen Press, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I found this book to be a really interesting, well-written read with characters that I really liked.

I could relate really well to the main character, Faith, in this. What she went through with her mother actually mirrors a lot of my relationship with my mother – though I was older than she was at the time. I felt the author did a really good job of portraying the mixed emotions Faith had in a realistic way.

I did like the other characters in the book as well. Although Faith’s relationships with Anj and Jesse were really up-and-down, it still came across as really natural – and Jesse was particularly sweet with how hard he worked to be a supportive friend towards Faith. Anj was a really good friend, too. I felt it was really good that Faith had that kind of support from them, no matter how much she tried to keep everyone at arms length.

The science aspects were a bit confusing at times, but I think I understood most of it by the end. I thought it was all really cleverly done and I particularly liked how the whole thing ended, even if I would have liked to see a bit more, ‘I told you so’.

The writing was mostly good, though I did notice a few errors. The book was well-written enough to keep me reading on the edge of my seat, though. I would definitely be interested in reading more books in this series in the future. It would be nice to see more of the characters.

The Call

The Call

(This review may contain spoilers).

This film is more of a thriller than a horror type, but I still really liked watching – both times. The first time was when I went to see it at the cinema, while the second time was today, with a friend.

This is quite an intense film to watch. There’s a lot of emotion involved with the characters. I personally feel that the actors did a really good job of portraying the characters. I’ve seen Halle Berry in other things before and I do think she’s a good actress. The emotions of the characters she plays really comes through well.

There’s a particular scene in this that brought me close to tears and caused my friend, who was watching, to tear up as well. Although I had seen this film before and knew what was going to happen, it still kept me on the edge of my seat even the second time around.

I do have some mixed feelings about the ending. There aren’t many endings that I feel emotionally torn about, but this was one of those.

My friend and I watched this film with audio description and I have to say, it wasn’t the best audio description I’ve heard. I had to pick up the slack a couple of times. It’s great that more films are including audio description, but some things are still left out, while unnecessary things are described to the detriment of what is important.

If you like thrillers with lots of action, this is definitely the film for you.

Triangle

(This review may contain spoilers).

I think this is going to be a hard film to review without giving away some of the main plot points, but I’ll try anyway.

I like horror movies. Watching them is a bit like going on a roller-coaster – it’s a safe kind of fear. (Though horror’s scarier when I watch it at the cinema. That doesn’t actually stop me doing so, though).

In many ways, I found this film to be quite cleverly done. There are moments of gore, but the main focus is on the main character, Jess, who I feel is played extremely well. When I saw this film for the first time, I found myself really caring about what was happening.

I think the other actors do a really good job as well. What I didn’t realise until a few moments ago was that Liam Hemsworth is in this film. That’s probably a bit random, but I’ve been seeing quite a few things with him in more recently. He is a good actor, though. I didn’t know the others, but I liked their work in this as well.

The first scene was, I felt, particularly effective in the way the scenes are shown. By the end of the film, the fractured scenes do make more sense.

I think this is a film that you really need to pay attention to the first time you watch it. It’s not perfect, but it’s a good, entertaining film with unexpected events happening. If you like horror, I would recommend this film as one to try out.

The Drone Enigma

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I have to say, this book isn’t one that I probably would have picked up to read automatically. I am glad I did read this, though. I found this to be really well-written with interesting, well-rounded characters.

Although I did like most of the characters, I did think there were a few too many different POVs in this book. It was difficult to really get used to one character before the chapter and POV changed.

I did feel that the blurb of the book gave a bit too much away. One of the things it talks about doesn’t happen until gone halfway through the book.

The book was intriguing enough to keep me reading throughout. I found the storyline to be really interesting and I felt the book really worked as a thriller. There are a couple of adult scenes that I wasn’t expecting, though. I also did think there were a lot of near-misses when it came to the characters being wounded.

I didn’t understand everything that was going on at first, but it made sense as the book went on. There was one thing in particular that I didn’t think had enough foreshadowing before it was revealed.

The book, on the whole, was well-written, though I did notice a few errors in the writing. Nothing major, but I still noticed them.

I think I would be interested in reading more books by this author in the future, depending on what the book’s about.

Marvel’s Mightiest Heroes: Spider-Man

Spider-Man

(This review may contain spoilers).

I watched the slightly older films of Spider-Man and I have to say, I was intrigued by a superhero whose ‘real’ life was that of a teenager. I’ve always been fascinated by the masked heroes – it’s the air of mystery.

I’ve never before been that interested in superhero comic books. When I saw this collection advertised, though, it was after I was getting interested in the films… so getting to know the original characters was too good an opportunity to pass up. So I signed up to get these books delivered to me.

It was really interesting to see these focal points to Peter Parker’s character. I liked seeing his origin as Spider-Man and I also found it interesting that he originally seemed unwilling to work with the other superheroes.

It was also fairly interesting to see glimpses of the other superheroes in the second comic contained in this book. I liked seeing Peter’s reactions to them. Some of his quips were amusing and I particularly liked the first Birthday comic – particularly the first scene. Then again, the last scene in the final Birthday comic was pretty emotional.

Although I didn’t know a lot of the characters who appeared in the comics, I found them really easy and quick to read. It was also good to see the thought processes behind the creation of Spider-Man. It was interesting that he was originally going to be scrapped.

I actually have Hawkeye’s issue to read, but it has to be fairly low on my list of to-read books, what with First-Reads giveaways and NetGalley.
