Genbu Kaiden12

(This review may contain spoilers).

So, I probably shouldn’t have read this, considering just how many books I have to read… I gave in to temptation, though, knowing that manga books generally only take me half an hour to read. (This one only took me twenty minutes, actually).

I’ve waited a really long time for this series to end. I knew how it was going to, but it didn’t make the ending any less intense.

I didn’t really need much refreshing of this book. I think the memories have always been in my head. After all, Fushigi Yugi was the first manga series I ever read.

The whole idea behind this series is a really good one and I feel it’s really good at showcasing elements of Japanese culture. There wasn’t as much humour in this book, but there were a few things that happened that made me smile.

The ending made me hopeful as well as saddened me. There was a lot that was good about this book and I really want to read the final arc of the second priestess. I know the story there, too, but it would be great to meet the characters in that setting.

If you’re interested in manga, though, and like the look of this, I would suggest starting off with the first Fushigi Yugi book. It’s one of those series definitely worth reading from the beginning.

Ideally, I’d like to give this book 4.5 stars – not quite 4; but not quite 5, either.

It did take me a couple of pages to properly get into this book. I wasn’t sure what to make of it at the beginning, but I was eventually able to empathise with the characters and felt better able to understand them.

This book is part of a series, a fact that I didn’t realise until after I began reading and saw there were references to past events. Even so, though, this book was fairly easy to read as a standalone work.

This was a fairly entertaining read. I liked the use of fairy creatures in this book and the characters were really intriguing. There were some bittersweet, slightly emotional scenes that affected me even though I hadn’t seen the events leading up to them.

There were a few things that I didn’t understand – the whole wolf thing was a bit confusing, though by the end, it did make a bit more sense.

I did like the religious allegory in this book, though that might be more because I am a Christian. There were quite a lot of relationships that I liked and would have liked to see further explored – Foxbrush’s relationship with his cousin, for instance.

The wood almost seemed like a character in itself and I quite liked that. The creatures were interesting and diverse and this book has made me want to read the other books in this series. When I looked on Amazon, I realised I had book one in this series already on my Kindle. I will read it at some point – and in the future at some point, I intend to buy the other books in this series.

If you like this type of book, I do recommend it. There are some recognisable fairy tale scenes, but nothing that detracts from the story itself. It was definitely a good, entertaining read and one I expect I would be prepared to read again in the future, which is what I do with books I particularly enjoy.

Serial Story: The Voice in the Dark Part 6

I moved back the way we’d come, until the taste of salt had gone from my lips. I thought about sitting on the ground, but decided that I didn’t want to risk sitting in something I shouldn’t. It’s not that I mind getting dirty; just that I didn’t want to sit in something that I didn’t know what it was. Instead, I leaned against the wall, wiping at my lips and wondering if I should quickly go and drink some water before coming back.

I didn’t actually have that long to wait. My eyes had adjusted enough to the dark that I could see Narcissus approaching. A woman was following him and even with my limited experience with other people, I could tell that there was something strange about her. She was pretty, but her eyes were empty and she seemed to see through me.

“Echo, this is my mother,” Narcissus said, smiling at me. He looked at his mother. “This is Echo. She’s a wood nymph and I just met her.”

I curtsied and smiled hesitantly at his mother. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“She doesn’t talk to people very much,” Narcissus said apologetically when she didn’t say anything.

“I suppose this cave is away from most people.”

Narcissus nodded. “You’re the first wood nymph I’ve seen.”

“We like to keep to ourselves.”

“Are you hungry?” Narcissus asked. “I caught some fish. There’s enough for you to eat some as well.”

I thought about that. “Could we eat outside, next to the lake?” My lips still felt a bit dry and I wasn’t used to it.

Narcissus nodded and then seemed to think of something. “You won’t get into trouble for being away for too long, will you?”

“We can still sit near the cave, but no one will come looking for me. And I’ll just tell them I was performing my duties if any of my sisters ask.”

“Would you like me to lead you out?”

“Are there any extra passages?”

Narcissus shook his head. “There’s just one long, winding passageway.”

“Then I can lead the way.” I began walking back through the passageway, trying to imagine what a fish might taste like. I’d seen them in streams, but my sisters tended to hunt animals in the forest for food.

I blinked a few times as I left the cave and the sunlight seemed a bit too bright. I turned away from it just as my eyes began watering, wiping at them as I sat down.

“Are you all right?” Narcissus asked as he led his mother outside.

“It’s just a bit bright.”

Narcissus settled his mother down on the ground and walked over to a pile of wood I hadn’t seen before. He rubbed a stone against one of the twigs and I jumped as a spark appeared and caught light.

I’d seen fire before, but it never ceased to startle me. I wasn’t scared of it, but I couldn’t help feeling nervous as the flames grew.

Fireship Nascence

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I have to be honest and say… I really found this book hard to read. It wasn’t the plot so much as the writing itself.

I’ve personally found it really hard to read blocks of text and there were a lot of those in this book. Paragraphs weren’t used in the correct way – several characters were speaking in the same paragraph. There was also a lot of switching between tenses. That really throws me out of a story and I almost considered giving up on this, despite the commitment I make to read books I receive advance copies of.

It took me a little while to fully work out what side the characters were on, or even to fully relate to them. I liked Daniel’s relationship with Jeff and I would have liked to see more of it. However, a lot of things were skipped over. There was one line in particular: ‘He talked to his nephew about things an uncle talks to his nephew about’. I’m sorry, but that’s a big turn-off for me with books. For one thing, people aren’t going to have the same conversations all over. For another… that was character development that was missed completely.

I think there are a lot of improvements that could be made. The plot – or what I could understand of it – was well-thought-out. But the blocks of text and lack of character development really made it difficult to read.

This was a book that grew on me as I read it. It started out as fairly hard to read, but by the end, I found myself pulled into the book, better able to connect with the characters. They did grow on me quite a bit by then.

Annie was an interesting character from the beginning. Although she’s clearly quite a strong character, I felt that she had good, realistic weaknesses. That was clear right from the start, even though I wasn’t very sure of her.

Nick and Derek were both interesting characters in their own way. Most of the characters came across as fairly well-balanced, but a few of them seemed evil for the sake of evil and I couldn’t quite figure out anything even remotely good about them.

I did really like Kevin as a character and I would have liked to see more of his relationship with his brother.

The powers thing was a pretty interesting idea and actually one of the things I felt gave me answers to all my questions by the end.

I do think that there was a bit too much skipping over of passages during the book. One of the things that made it difficult at the beginning was the fact that I felt most of it was being summarised. I really struggled to picture anything happening in my mind.

I did see some errors in this book, but not a huge amount. I would be interested in reading more books in this series in the future and checking out other books by the same author.

Hunger Games: Catching Fire (Movie Review)

Hunger Games Catching Fire

(This review may contain minor spoilers).

I think I liked this film better than the first one. There were quite a few bits kept in that I liked from the book and it was good to see equal time paid to the events before and during the arena.

It was nice to see Cinna (my favourite character) again, too, though the actor’s appearance had changed somewhat from the first film.

I felt that the special effects worked really well in this film. It came across really well how those in the Capitol just saw it all as a game, even though Effie was clearly at least starting to see them as people.

I felt that most of the actors really fit the roles of the characters they were portraying, especially Finnick and Johanna. The only one I wasn’t sure about was Beetee. The actor is fairly good, but I felt he didn’t quite pull off the right personality.

Although there were some things I would have liked to see in this film, on the whole, it was another faithful adaptation. In my opinion, this is really visually appearing and the arena works really well, as do the various costumes and the contrasts between different Districts.

The Quiet Ones

(This review may contain minor spoilers).

This film was a little odd in that the adverts I saw for it had very little of the actual supernatural events from the film in them. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect when I went to see it.

The film title didn’t really seem to have much relevance, apart from one throwaway line over halfway through that I didn’t really get the purpose of.

I did struggle a lot to relate to the characters. There was something I thought might become relevant with Brian (the cameraman) later on, but although that particular item kept being panned towards by the camera, it didn’t seem to mean anything.

The actors did do a good job, to an extent, but I just found it really hard to care about the characters they portrayed. I would have liked to know a bit more about their history and what had brought them together.

There were some jumpy moments in the film and I did think that the music score was particularly effective. The filming within the film didn’t work so well, though. I’ve only seen that done well once before.

This film was kind of entertaining to watch, but not one I’d see again.

Falling

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I do like thriller books and I felt this one was a particularly intriguing one, although the constant changes between the characters did get a bit confusing at times.

I thought it was good that this book was as much about the characters as about the mystery going on. I particularly liked Tom’s relationship with his son. I didn’t like Cecilia at first, but as the book progressed, I found it easier to understand her as a character.

All of the characters were interesting in their own way, but I wasn’t sure about Richard. He seemed a bit young mentally, but it wasn’t very clear whether that was the case or not.

The mystery did work quite well in this book and I did like how Cecilia bonded with Maisie. The characters were different enough from each other to make sure there was no confusion and they were fairly likable.

I did figure out some things before they were revealed. I didn’t think there were many red herrings/false leads. At the same time, however, I felt able to empathise with the characters and understand them.

I did notice that the book kept switching tenses and slipping into past events without warning, which did make it a bit confusing to read.

This was a fairly tame mystery, but still fairly good. I would be interested in reading more books by this author in the future.

First Impression

(I received a free copy of this book from All Night Reads, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

For some reason, I get through Kindle books faster than I do print books. I have no idea why that is, but I was surprised at just how quickly I read this book, considering I thought that, due to a wedding and my night shift, I wouldn’t be finished this until tomorrow.

The blurb of the book sounded really intriguing, especially because I’m sick of demons being used in books. (Of course, that didn’t really work with the book later on, but still…)

The first person POV worked really well and I did like the main character. There were parts of her that I could relate to and there were a few things that did make me smile.

The paranormal elements were fairly mild, in my opinion. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but I would have liked to see a bit more. The appearance of the spirit was creepy, but there was only the one showing and I would have liked to see more of the ghost.

I did like Chira’s and Ben’s relationship, but I’m not really sure about the whole thing with Matt. I didn’t find him nearly as well-developed as a character and I don’t understand what his whole game was.

I would have liked to see more of Tasha in this book. She was probably my favourite character in this and I hope that she’ll appear more in the later books.

I did find this book to be really well-written and there were very few mistakes that I noticed. I would definitely be interested in reading more books in this series in the future. It would be great to see the characters’ storylines further explored.

If you’re as sick as vampires as I am, this is a welcome change.

The Hunger Games

(This review may contain spoilers).

This is a film that I have read the book it was made from, though that was quite a long time ago.

This was, in my opinion, one of the more faithful adaptations of book to film. I thought that the actors did a really good job of portraying the characters they were playing and although quite a few scenes had been missed out or changed from the book, it still worked really well.

I felt that the ways information was imparted worked really well. There was the film towards the beginning that was shown and, I felt, was particularly effective. Information was also revealed through hallucinations, which I felt was something that also worked especially well.

I did feel that the film was shot in an effective way. One scene in particular worked really well because there was only music and no other sound – which really added well to the atmosphere.

The contrasts in costume between the Districts and the Capitol worked really well. I particularly liked the actor who played Cinna. He was my favourite character in the books.

I do think this film is worth seeing, even if you haven’t read the books. Although it’s changed some details, it’s nothing major and I think most of it works. I recommend watching it, but some scenes are hard-hitting emotionally.
