Immortal's Discord

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

This was actually the book I requested to read, though the author kindly provided me with the first book to read as well. Although I’m normally fairly good at picking up storylines in books later in a series, it was good to read from the start.

It was nice to see many of the characters from book one, as well as new ones. One of my suspicions that I had from reading book one actually got confirmed in this book, which was pretty interesting, particularly in how it was handled.

I liked the idea of the Fist, but even by the end of the book, I was still left with more questions about Valos and the others. The bond between them was a really intriguing one and I would have liked to see more of that, too.

I did get a bit confused with the connection that Katze and Terius had. Even after reaching the end of the book, I wasn’t sure I really understood what was going on there.

I liked the different kinds of gods there were and the plotline running with one of those was a pretty interesting one. I also liked the idea of the No Stone. Ellen is a particularly interesting element and I’d like to know more about her.

At some point in the future, I’d really like to read the next books in this series. Currently, Amber might be the character I like the most and I’m really intrigued to see how certain elements in this book are going to be explored later on.

Black Magic Woman

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

This is another book I would ideally give 3.5 stars to, but since I can’t give half stars, I’ll leave it at 3.

I really did like the blurb of this book. It sounded really intriguing. I was a bit disappointed, however, that the book didn’t seem to dwell much on that storyline, instead following several different storylines. Although it was still a good read, I got confused a few times with the characters.

There did seem to be a lot of romantic pairing off, but I was a bit disappointed that some of the developments weren’t really shown. I did like Wyatt as a character, but I felt that the story shouldn’t have switched between first and third person. It was hard to be in Wyatt’s head and then to end up in third person.

I really liked the parts with Jason and Wyatt Travelling. I felt the differences between the two places were made really clear and that the Travelling theme (similar to reincarnation) worked particularly well.

I was a bit disappointed by how the curse was resolved, though. I felt there could have been so much more explored. The horn and wrongful execution storyline were interesting, but they seemed to be much more explored than the paranormal elements.

The paranormal elements in the book were pretty interesting as well. I did notice quite a few errors in this book, mostly punctuation ones. Although it was part of a series, I did find it easy to follow and read.

I would probably read the other books in this series at some point in the future, just to see what will happen with the characters.

Into The Storm

(This review may contain spoilers).

I’ve seen a number of disaster movies and in some ways, I think this film is a bit similar to The Day After Tomorrow. I don’t think it’s too similar, but there were some elements they shared.

I felt that this film did really well with the characters. I could believe in the father and sons aspects and there were some really intense, moving scenes.

I recognised some of the actors in the film, too, but even the ones I didn’t recognise, I felt played their characters well.

There were a few amusing moments in the film that helped to break up the tension, particularly one that was right at the end. The serious moments worked really well, though.

I’m sure that a lot of this film wasn’t scientifically accurate, but I still found it entertaining viewing. The effects worked really well and although I felt the cameras used inside the film made it a bit disjointed at times, it also provided the interesting experience of feeling like a part of the film.

I think I would probably watch this film again sometime in the future.

Step Up All In

(This review may contain spoilers).

I’ve seen quite a few dance movies now. The last one I saw at the cinema had a pretty big ending, so I couldn’t help wondering how they would handle it in this film.

I did feel there was quite a bit of personal conflict in this film, which I felt worked really well. It was also good to see the conflicts with the secondary characters, too.

I think there are certain cliches that dance movies tend to follow. This film did hit a lot of those, but even so, I felt it was a really entertaining movie to watch.

I haven’t watched enough of the previous movies to recognise most of the characters. There was one I knew, but although a lot of the characters weren’t explored, I could still understand and relate to the characters who were.

I really liked the dancing in this film. There were some very cool effects used throughout, like the dance that utilised a lab.

There were some quite sweet, emotional scenes in this film that really got to me, especially with the human-robot. I also really liked Moose’s relationship with his girlfriend… or possibly wife. I’m not quite sure which she was.

There were some really cool scenes in this film and although I probably wouldn’t buy it on DVD as soon as it comes out, I wouldn’t mind watching it again. If you like dance movies, I recommend this as one to watch.

Rogue Hunter Inquest

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Ideally, I’d like to give this book 3.5 stars. It was quick and easy to read, but I would have liked to see a bit more of the world generally.

I liked Zyra as a character, but I would have liked some more background on her. I liked her relationship with Mikaela, too, but I did think she showed herself to be still rather naive when it came to her interacting with her bounty.

The Amazon-like planet of just women was quite an interesting idea, especially the reasons as to why their society had developed in that way. What was also interesting was how it was made clear that, even though they saw men as more ‘bad’ than women, some of the women on the planet were still bad people.

I felt there was quite a lot of politics in this, which was good. Although things could have gone much better if the characters had been a bit more heroic, I could see where a lot of them were coming from.

I felt that the descriptions of the fighting worked really well. The book held my attention throughout and although I think it could have been a bit longer, it did work more or less the way it did. I felt that the flashbacks weren’t necessary and could have been moved to the beginning of the book.

I think I would read the next book in this series to find out what will happen to the characters. This book ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, so it would be nice to see how things go from there.

Heated

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Although I don’t have much interest in Fifty Shades of Grey type novels, I did think the blurb of this book was quite intriguing.

Although there is a comment on the back of this book about it being like Fifty Shades of Grey, I liked the fact that there was an actual storyline in the book.

I felt the first person perspective worked really well to enable me to relate to the main character and it was nice that the author stuck with just one POV character.

I liked the way the relationship between the two main characters developed. I found it really believable. I also liked the erotic encounters between them – just as well, since it’s an erotic romance book. The only real problem I had was the use of a particular word. Because of the negative connotations associated with that word, it makes me cringe even in a sex scene.

It was nice to see Tyler and his friends as not quite the bad guys they came across as. Even though things weren’t completely great on the erotic side all the time, I didn’t get a creepy vibe on the consensual side.

I would probably read the other two books in this trilogy at some point in the future. Evan and Cole are interesting enough characters that it would be interesting to see how things go for them.

Earth to Echo

Earth to Echo

(This review may contain spoilers).

When I saw this film advertised originally, I did think it was going to be a remake of E.T. I do think it draws a lot from that movie, having seen it today.

I liked the use of the technology in this book. I thought good use was made with the cameras, though I do think that videoing the events in a film is getting over-used, with all of the ‘found footage’ movies around now.

I liked the different personalities of the main characters and how they all played off each other. Although the theme of family wasn’t very strong through the film (the families of all four of them seemed very neglectful), I felt the friendship theme worked really well.

I also particularly liked Echo. He was cute and I really liked the way he communicated. It was also interesting how the camera angles changed so that the audience could see certain scenes from Echo’s perspective.

I did think that the bad guys weren’t really given any interesting motives. They just came across as token bad guys who were just villains for the sake of it. That’s never very interesting.

I did like the film and I know family members and friends who’ve seen the film and really liked it. I did enjoy watching it, but I don’t think I would see it again.
