Description:

It turns out that a real alien invasion is nothing like the Sci-fi shows 14-year-old Gracie loves. Not when it’s your own family who are swallowed whole by those big silver ships. Not if it could be you next.

In her search for her family, Gracie meets Brandon, a high school dropout who would never have been caught dead hanging out with a dork like Gracie before the world ended. Gracie isn’t too crazy about Brandon either, but he has one thing she doesn’t: A plan.

Brandon’s uncle has a cabin up in Maine, and If Gracie and Brandon can survive long enough to get there they can hide out until the Space Men pack up their ships and leave.

Until the army guys come to rescue them, says Brandon.

Brandon is big into army guys.

Gracie has to admit that Brandon’s Awesome Plan probably would have worked out great if wasn’t for Jake.

They found 5-year-old Jake, laying half-dead under the remains of someone’s ranch house. He’s a good kid, even if he won’t-or can’t- talk.

But Jake has a secret, and when Gracie finds out what it is, the fragile new life they’ve started to forge looks set to break apart.

When the people you’ve been counting on to put the world back together start hunting you down, alien invaders are the least of your worries.

About The Author

jea_author

J.E. Anckorn has been an artist and writer ever since she began to surreptitiously doodle on school supplies instead of learning about practical things, like osmosis and mathematics.

After barely surviving a freak mathematical osmosis disaster, she set out to travel the world, living in New Zealand, Australia and Hong Kong before returning to her native Britain- just in time to marry an American and leave for the U.S.A. She still failed to learn anything about osmosis, but did manage to cultivate an accent that is unintelligible to almost everyone. (It happened through a mysterious net movement of information from the outside environment into her brain. If only there was a word for that!)

This led to her development of a new language, based almost entirely on polite yet uncomprehending nods. In between these adventures, she has worked as a toy designer, copywriter, and freelance illustrator. She lives in Boston, with a small grumpy dog, and a large, slightly less grumpy husband.

The Last Shuttle

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

I think it’s clear that a lot of research went into this book and although I felt it could have been a bit longer, I did find this book quite easy and entertaining to read.

There were quite a lot of details in this book, though I struggled a bit to relate to any of the characters. I think having a bit more background would have made it easier for me to empathise with the characters.

Even despite that difficulty, I felt myself drawn into the book. From about the middle of the book to the end, I was eager to see what would happen and really pulled into the plot.

I can’t say I understood all of the technical details in this book, but I did appreciate that the author had done all of that research and clearly knew what he was talking about.

I was quite intrigued by Sentinel and I would have liked to know a bit more about his planet and people. I think there’s a lot more of this story that could be explored in the next book.

(This review may contain spoilers).

Zombies are one of those things that are used quite a lot in fiction, whether horror or otherwise. (Teen paranormal romance is starting to use zombies, I’ve noticed…) Therefore, I imagine it’s probably very difficult to come up with a different, unique spin on the zombie genre.

I felt that this author did a good job of creating a new spin on the zombie genre. Instead of the zombies just coming out of nowhere, or reading their origin but not actually seeing it happen, it was good to see an explanation of the cause… plus, I felt that the origin of the zombies was quite an interesting one. I would have liked a few more details about it, though.

I actually quite liked Little Bear as a character at first. I empathised with both him and Summer Rain after the first scene of the story. Of course, I lost a lot of my sympathy for them as the story went on… but I appreciated the glimpses into their thoughts and feelings and how their minds worked.

I wasn’t really sure what to make of Charity. By the end of the book, I didn’t really like her… but then again, it wasn’t clear how much of her mind was the same and how much had changed.

I thought it was interesting that there were the two types of zombies; the ones who were more like animals and the ones who had a bit more intelligence. Again, that’s something I would have liked to learn a few more details about. There didn’t seem to be any reason as to why some of them remembered their history/personality and others didn’t.

At first, I did get a bit confused with the different characters, but eventually, I was able to relate to them. I liked Jasper quite a lot, but I was very surprised by the fact that Jeremiah grew in my estimation by the end of the book.

The book itself was really well-written and I could see a lot of the scenes happening in my mind. I would definitely be interested in reading the sequel to this book at some point in the future.

As Above So Below

(This review may contain spoilers).

I’ve been seeing this film advertised quite a lot recently. I’d already decided I was going to see it at the cinema and finally wound up going today. I have to say, however, I’m not sure it’s a film I’d see again.

The film actually starts off reasonably well, with a good introduction to the main characters and their relationships. There’s also the hint that something haunts Scarlett, which is a nice piece of foreshadowing.

The visual and audio effects in this film worked particularly well. There was one scene in particular where the sound was distorted and had quite a unique effect. There were other scenes where the lighting worked particularly well and there were a lot of jumpy moments that worked really well.

My problem with this film was the lack of any kind of explanation. It isn’t made clear what’s going on and although the uses of mythology are interesting and work to an extent, I can’t see how they truly fit in.

I did like the hints of a relationship that was between Scarlett and George. I would have liked to see more scenes with them in.

Just once, I think it would be nice if there was a horror movie that actually has a proper ending and explanation for what’s going on. I like finding out the details and, to be honest, this film wasn’t really satisfying at the end.

The Poisoning Angel

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I have some mixed feelings about this book. I felt that the blurb of this book sounded quite intriguing, but the execution wasn’t quite as good as it could have been.

It’s probably very difficult to write about the life of a murderer, whether real or fictional. A murderer isn’t the sort of character who can easily be made sympathetic. I felt the author didn’t really explore the motivations that might have driven Helene. I suppose it made sense, though, because she came across as very much a madwoman.

Some of the scenes in this book were quite intriguing, but there were others that I had some difficulty in following what was going on. I wasn’t sure, most of the time, why Helene would kill a certain amount of people, but leave others alive.

The book itself was easy to read and it was interesting to see the folk tales from where Helene grew up. She was thoroughly unlikable in this book and I was kind of relieved by the ending.

I don’t know if I would read any more books by this author in the future. It would have to depend on the subject matter and if the book was one that I thought I might be interested in.

The wagons surrounded the site in a semi-circle. Sweat pooled in my palms. I had to take out the guards closest to that entrance. If I failed, so did the mission.

Get a grip.

I clenched the arrow in my right hand. Brushfire shifted nervously, sensing my fear. I rubbed her neck. I felt safer with her. She’d been with me since Jimri’s death. At night when the nightmares taunted me, I’d sneak out, riding until dawn forced us home. I’d rescued her from the burning woods, she’d rescued me from despair — today, I prayed both of us would make it out alive.

Although I did have some trouble at first to get into this book, I found myself eventually becoming involved in the world and the characters. Although I don’t really like multiple first person POVs, it wasn’t too hard to read this book, even if there were a few occasions where I got confused.

I think my favourite character in this book was probably Avikar. I felt myself easily able to connect with him and I felt that his relationships and connections to the other characters in the book came across really well. I particularly felt his relationship with Raven came across as really believable and natural.

I was less keen on Jeslyn’s character. Although her storyline was interesting, I found Lucino a more well-rounded character than she was. I didn’t think she came across as all that faithful and she seemed a little less three-dimensional.

Lucino’s people came across as really intriguing. I would have liked to know more about their origins and see more of them than just Lucino and Lucy. There were some things in the book that weren’t explored as much I would have liked.

I also found Jericho to be quite an intriguing character. He certainly changed quite a lot from how he’d appeared in the first place. One of the things I also liked was how Avikar reacted when he faced actually having to kill people.

The world in this book was a particularly intriguing one as well. I would have liked to see more of its history, but as a Christian, it was quite nice to see those elements included in the book as well.

I would definitely read the next book following on from this one. This was an intriguing world and at least two of the main characters were intriguing ones I’d like to see more of.

About The Book

Hopeless he’ll never be more than the boy who didn’t save his brother, 17-year-old Avikar accepts his life as the family stable boy, trying to forget the past. But when his sister, Jeslyn, is kidnapped, the thought of losing another sibling catapults him on a desperate quest. With his best friend by his side, and using the tracking skills he learned from his father, he discovers Jeslyn has been taken, kidnapped by one Lucino, the young lord of Daath, a mystical place thought only to exist in fables.
And Lucino has plans for Jeslyn.

His shapeshifter brethren feed off the auras of humans, and Jeslyn’s golden hue is exactly what Lucino needs to increase his power. The longer it takes Avikar to reach her, the more entranced she becomes with Lucino’s world, and the harder it will be for Avikar to set her free.

He failed his family once. He won’t fail again.

Sex Tape

(This review may contain spoilers).

I think the very idea behind this film is one that probably everyone can relate to. Not so much the sex tape being sent out, but sending text messages or e-mails to the wrong people. Most of the time, they’re harmless… but, of course, a lot of the time, it’s perfectly innocent and harmless.

Thanks to my brother (and E4), I’ve been watching a lot of How I Met Your Mother, so it was hard not to see Jason Segel as Marshall… especially when some of the things Jay said sounded so much like Marshall’s character.

Despite that, I did still quite enjoy this film. There was a little bit of mystery part of the way through and there was a lot of humour in this, even if there were some really cringe-worthy scenes.

There’s quite a lot that’s adult in nature about this film. I think the title makes it quite clear exactly what this film is about, but it is extremely graphic.

There were a few recognisable actors in this film and I felt they helped make it quite entertaining. There was good use made of the technology and the film held my attention throughout. It’s not a comedy film I would buy on DVD personally, but I think it was definitely entertaining to watch.

Lion Heart

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

This is a book I have some quite mixed feelings about. The blurb on the back sounded really intriguing, but I felt that it wasn’t entirely accurate, because the book was very much more about the modern Richard and not so much about Richard the First.

There were some quite intriguing parts about this book, but I found the characters quite difficult to get behind. I think it was trying too hard to be a mixture of different genres; and, well, I didn’t really like Richard as a character.

I liked the storyline with Noor and I did feel that her reactions to certain things came across as really natural and realistic. I couldn’t believe in them being in love, though – there were hardly any scenes of them together before the engagement happened.

The historical pieces were fairly interesting, but I felt that they could have been worked a bit better… perhaps being written as a parallel storyline. There were some things that were attempted to be linked to modern-Richard’s storyline, but I think those failed for the most part.

I’m not sure if I’d read any more books by this author. It would have to depend on the book itself.

A Parallel Path

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I remember having a conversation with someone about deja vu and the different theories about time that might link to why people have those kinds of feelings. One of those theories is that everything has already happened before and that time moves in a circle. I don’t personally subscribe to that theory, but this almost seems like a good representation of that theory.

Out of the two storylines, I found Dominic’s to be better written. I did spend a lot of the book assuming that I knew what was going on and there were a few surprises during the course of it.

It was interesting to see the parallels between Dominic’s and Nasty’s paths, but I felt that Dominic’s were much better described. Even the food he ate varied, whereas I read about Nasty having warm bread and an apple more times than I felt was really necessary.

The idea of Nasty going barefoot was quite an interesting one and I felt that the author did a really good job of showing that, although it was her nature, there were still some problems and a few times when her feet got hurt and even infected. I did, however, think that the barefoot thing was mentioned a few too many times.

I also thought it was interesting how the people Dominic and Nasty met interacted with them. The idea of the pilgrimage is quite a cool one. If I had the time/fitness level/money, it’s something I’m sure I would personally like to experience.

I didn’t think everything was explained to my satisfaction in this book and I’d be interested in a sequel that further explores this storyline. I’d probably check out other books by this author in the future.
