(This review may contain spoilers).

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. The plotline was really interesting and engaging enough that it kept me reading throughout, even though I’m normally too tired to do much of anything after a night shift.

It was nice to read a book that didn’t have demons in it. I really liked the paranormal aspects of this book and I also really liked the characters. It was also nice to see a well-rounded character in the school bully… though I didn’t really like him for a lot of the book, even by the end.

I did like Alex in the book, even though I felt he was kind of mean to Kaylee for a lot of the book. I felt that the author did a good job of showing the kind of thought processes and comments six-year-olds make. By the end of the book, my sympathy for Kaylee had grown quite a lot.

I would have liked to see more of some of the other characters, too. There was a subplot I would have liked to see further explored… one that confused me a bit. I didn’t really understand what was going on in regards to that. But it was definitely something I would have liked to see explored more.

The book itself was well-written and I felt that I could really picture a lot of the events happening in my mind. I was pulled in right from the start and the book kept me hooked all the way through.

I think I’d definitely be interested in reading more books by this author and it would be good to see a sequel exploring some of the plots that were left hanging, in a way, in this book. It definitely had a proper ending, but there was more that could have been explored… at least in my opinion.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

(This review may contain spoilers).

This is now the second time I’ve seen this film. The plot of A Christmas Carol has been used in quite a lot of different things, but I felt it was a fairly unique take in this film.

I recognised two of the main actors in this film, but there was one I’d only seen in something else recently. It was interesting to see him in something else, playing a semi-serious character rather than a lawyer flirting with breaking the rules. (Franklin and Bash).

There were quite a few humorous moments in this film that I felt worked really well, while keeping to the original spirit of A Christmas Carol. There were a number of things I recognised from the original version, as well as the film that was later made of it.

I did think that there were still some things that were left unanswered by the end of the film, but the three ghosts were utilised in quite a unique way, I felt… even if I wasn’t all that sure about their origins or anything.

I liked the more serious moments in this film as well. I also liked the ending. I felt it worked really well for this film.

The atmosphere in this film was particularly good and the actors were really good in this. Most of the time, I could really believe in the characters they played. I don’t think I’d buy this film on DVD, but it’s definitely one I wouldn’t mind watching again.

Dinky’s Quest: The Journey Begins

Dinky's Quest The Journey Begins

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I felt this book worked fairly well as a children’s book, but I did think that the narration of the main character of his past would have worked better to be shown in the book, rather than told about.

I did like Dinky as a character, but I did think that some of the speech used in the book was a bit adult in nature and not always good for all ages.

I did really like the illustrations used in the book. They were really nicely done and some of them were quite beautiful. It was also nice to see how Dinky viewed his previous place as different to the one he ended up in.

Some of this book assumes knowledge of horses and I think it would benefit from a bit more detail about certain things, such as the name Dinky as a foal is called. It was also nice to see the other horses in the book, but I would have liked a bit more detail with them. I felt that dialogue was used a bit too much and I would have liked to ‘see’ more of the world.

I did think it was interesting that there were questions raised in this book that were potentially deep ones. It would be good to see where the author takes those questions in the future books in the series.

I do think my niece would like this book and I do intend to pass it on to her. At least, I do think she’ll really like the illustrations and Dinky’s character.

Dolphin Tale 2

Dolphin Tale 2

(This review may contain spoilers).

I haven’t seen the previous film (although the website of the cinema I tend to go on said it was the first one showing), but I still found this film really easy to follow.

I felt that this film was a real feel-good one. It was nice to see the dolphins in the film and there were some really sad moments in the film, too. I really liked Sawyer as a character – by the end, I felt that he and Hazel should end up with each other.

I felt that the atmosphere in this film was really good as well. There was a nice variety of characters involved and I especially liked the pelican, Rufus. I liked the different types of animals there were in the film and I felt there were a lot of sweet moments that really made the film a good one to watch.

I recognised some of the actors in the film, but I liked all of them. It was also nice that none of the characters were really ‘bad’ people.

I really enjoyed watching this film and I felt it was really interesting to see the scenes at the end. It was nice to see the videos of the real centre and the dolphins there, as well as people who have visited the place. And I was left with a really good feeling at the end of the film. I’d probably watch this one again at some point in the future… and also watch the first Dolphin Tale film as well.

Burn The Dead

Burn The Dead

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Read giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I personally felt that this book was a more unique story about a zombie apocalypse, because rather than showing the start of it and everyone trying to escape/survive, the author showed a world that had some semblance of order even after the disease had hit… and people actually taking on jobs directly relating to dealing with the rising dead.

I found Rob an easy character to relate to. It was interesting to see the fact that his job had become almost mundane, when the very act of burning people is probably a horrific one… when they’re still ‘living’, even if it’s not real life.

Rob’s desperation to find his son came across really well in this book, I felt. I liked seeing the glimpses of his life with his wife and son, though I would have liked a few more details about how long ago the dead started rising… was it fairly soon before the events of the book, or had it been going on for quite a long time?

It was interesting to see the reactions of the other characters to what was going on, too. I found it intriguing how some of them viewed the whole thing. And I really liked the fact that Rob still tried to help out the other people, even though he was desperate to find his son.

I found the book, on the whole, to be really well-written. There were a few scenes that made me hold my breath, particularly the one in the church. And the descriptions of the dead feeding on the living were particularly creepy.

Some of the characters voiced the theory that perhaps the infection could be reversed and I think it could be interesting to read a sequel with that possibility. I would definitely look at more books by this author in the future. This was a quick, easy read and had a main character who was easy to relate to and empathise with. And as I said earlier, this was a fairly unique take on the ‘suddenly the dead are coming back and attacking the living’ theme.

Eye of the Storm

(I received a free copy of this book from Broad Universe Publishing, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I’ve always liked books about myths and legends and although I got a bit confused while reading this book, I still found it an entertaining, well-written read with an interesting plot and characters.

I thought it was pretty interesting how the author merged the different pantheons in this, even though I would have liked to see more of the characters and how they fit together. (Both Thor and Loki were referenced to, but I always thought that Loki was more like Hermes from the Greek pantheon… so…)

I did find myself drawn into this book pretty much from the beginning, but I wasn’t too happy that the book kept switching between first and third person. I would have preferred either to stick with Alexander’s first person POV, or keep it all in third person… that is, unfortunately, one of my pet peeves and I struggled to really connect with Alexander for a while, having spent a short amount of time in his head before being yanked out again.

I felt that the idea about the possession was an interesting one, but I couldn’t help feeling sorry for Camilla. Alexander did lose a lot of sympathy from me after the way he was.

I did find this book easy to read and, of course, it was nice to see the characters from the legend in their modern-day forms… though I felt that Apollo was much stranger than I would have thought. It was a bit disappointing to see many of their aspects weren’t explored.

The form of address was interesting – brother-cousin. It was an interesting way to see how they viewed their family.

I liked the fact that the characters had limitations to what they could do. I would have liked to see more of Alexander’s evolution. The ending was interesting, but I felt there wasn’t enough setup to reach that.

I would probably read the next book in this series at some point in the future. It would be nice to see more of the characters and their world.

Robyn Hood: Legend

Robyn Hood Legend

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

This is the second comic book in this ‘verse that I’ve read and I felt this was quite an intriguing comic book. I know the legends of Robin Hood quite well and it was fairly interesting to read an alternate reality where Robin was actually a girl. I would have liked to know how she could shoot the bow and arrow when half-blind, though…

It was interesting to see other characters from the legends as well. I particularly found Guy to be an intriguing character. I would have liked some more details about the history between them, though I appreciated the use of the flashbacks.

I also liked the relationship between Robyn and Will. The use of magic, particularly by Marian, was quite interesting as well.

I did find this storyline really easy to follow, even though it was later in the series. I also felt that the artwork was really nice. There were a lot of really pretty scenes and I liked the appearances of the characters. I also really liked the artwork at the end of the comic, too. There were some really pretty pieces there, too.

I did think that Robyn was probably the easiest character to empathise with. The other characters were interesting as well, but I definitely liked Robyn the best.

I really liked this ‘verse and I’d definitely be interested in reading other stories about Robyn Hood at some point in the future. Although some parts of it were very violent, there were a lot of really nice scenes as well and some that were quite emotional. If you’re on the fence about reading this, I recommend at least giving it a try.

Android Angels

Android Angels

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I’ve always liked reading Japanese manga books and this wasn’t an exception. I liked the artwork of this book and I liked the different storylines that still linked together while showing different relationships between the different characters.

The four-year limitation on owning the androids was quite an interesting idea and I found it interesting to see that the final story, at least, dealt with someone not able to let go. I think it would have been interesting to see more people who had that difficulty. There was some violence involved, but I liked the fact that the stories centered more around the people. Even though it would have been interesting to see the technology behind the androids, it was good to see how they interacted with people… though I wondered if their feelings were ‘real’ or merely mimicked.

I particularly liked the artwork in this book. I felt that most of the characters looked different enough that I didn’t have too many problems telling them apart.

I felt one of the stories dealt with one serious issue particularly well. I was a bit hesitant at one of the scenes, but it went much better than I’d expected.

I’m not sure there were any stories I liked better than others. They were all quite sweet in their own way. I felt sorry for the humans and the androids, even knowing that the androids wouldn’t remember anything after the four years were up. I would have liked to see something about people realising that that was wrong.

I’d probably read more stories set in this world at some point in the future. I found this collection to be really entertaining and I enjoyed reading it. It might not be for everyone, but I did enjoy this.

24: Underground

24 Underground

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I’ve seen bits and pieces of the television series 24 and I remember being quite intrigued by the characters. I haven’t actually seen the episodes detailing the events leading up to what’s happened here, but I still found it fairly easy to understand.

I felt that the artwork in this book fit really well with the feel of the world of 24. It was very… gritty in places. I don’t really know how else to describe it. There was a lot of violence in this, but I still found myself quite drawn into the world and the characters.

Jack Bauer was the only character I really recognised and I felt his appearance was true to the show. I also felt that his personality fit in with his character on the show as well.

It was interesting how the speech style was changed to indicate when the characters were speaking in Russian. I felt that worked particularly well.

I would have liked some insight into Jack’s thought processes. And a bit of background about why he was on the run and everything, though presumably, that was detailed in the television series. It did feel a bit like an episode, though the ending was somewhat disappointing.

I’m not sure I’d read the next books following on from this one. Although the art was good and the storyline intense enough to keep me reading, I struggled to connect with the other characters who appeared. I would have liked to spend a bit more time meeting them and learning more about them before all the action started. As it was, I struggled to care about what happened with anyone other than Jack.

The Eye of Orion: Spinebreakers

The Eye of Orion Spinebreakers

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Although this book was the second in a series, I still found it fairly easy to follow. The plotline and characters were really interesting and I was very intrigued by them.

I particularly liked Steo as a character. I was a bit less certain of Cyrus at first – he seemed quite weak for part of the book. But he did grow on me later on during the course of the book.

The world in this book was quite an interesting one. I would have liked to see more of the different planets and the alien species. The glimpses I had of the world made me want to see more of it. I also liked learning about the different types of technology there was. The rest of the crew of the Orion were really interesting as well. I would have liked to see more of their history and how they all came together. I also particularly liked Yuina as a character. There was an exchange she had with Cyrus that really made me smile.

Steo was a character I could really get behind. I like the ‘good’ guys… and that’s how Steo came across to me. I would have liked to see more of his relationships to the other characters… and how his loyalty to them is so strong.

The hints of Muuk’s civilisation were quite interesting and I would have liked to see more details about that. I couldn’t really understand what Admiral Slaught was trying to achieve… possibly because I only read about him in this book. It was also good to see characters who didn’t just kill for the sake of it and who tried to find more peaceful solutions.

On the whole, I found this book to be really well-written and I really cared about the characters and what happened to them. I would definitely be interested in reading other books about these characters at some point in the future.
