Victor of Thrace Review Opportunity

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I do have some very mixed feelings about this book. It was fairly easy and quick to read. I liked the front cover and the blurb of the book was really intriguing.

Unfortunately, I found it really difficult to connect to the main characters. Part of that was the romance. It didn’t come across as very believable and Tatiana was just a bit too… ‘different’. I only saw her as a vampire, so I had no idea what she’d been like as a human and I think I might have found it easier to connect with her if I’d seen more of her life before she met Victor. The reluctance Victor had to give her to his brother would have come across much better if it hadn’t been insta!love.

I was really intrigued by the world of Thrace. To be honest, I found the world-building so intriguing that that’s why this book gets three stars instead of two. I loved the fact that there were fairies involved and I would have liked to see more of the other creatures that there were.

The elves were quite interesting as well, but I had a lot of questions left by the end of the book. For instance (and I have never yet come across a vampire romance that actually deals with this) how does sex work? How does having babies work? Apparently, many of the ‘normal’ vampire weaknesses don’t apply to the vampires of Thrace, but there’s no explanation about how vampirism works. It’s interesting that the rules are different between the two worlds, but as a new vampire, I feel that, as a reader, I should have been learning about the world through Tatiana… but so much of the book was taken up with the sex that I felt a lot of those answers fell by the wayside.

Speaking of the sex… a lot of the language used actually made me cringe. Then again, there are very few words that I think work. (The c-word was used, which I really don’t like).

The idea of the Feeding House was quite an interesting one, as was the different flavour blood. There were times when I felt certain characters were more incompetent than they should have been.

The fighting was quite interesting, but I was disappointed that Tatiana’s training was completely glossed over; along with the whole falling in love with thing. I was interested by Victor’s relationships with the other characters, but I felt that many of those weren’t explored in the best way they could have been.

I think that, if the relationship had taken the time to be built (they’re vampires. They have eternity to fall in love), I would have found it much easier to believe. As it is… it didn’t feel real to me and not enough time was spent on the other relationships for me to believe in them. There was very little foreshadowing and the best part of this book was the world building. I don’t think I’ll be reading the sequel to this book.

Treasure Me

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I found this book to be a really sweet, easy read. It was a nice romance and I found myself quite liking Birdie as a character. I think that some of the humour fell flat at times, but Birdie was really easy to relate to. And it was nice to see a romance that wasn’t an insta!love.

The mystery surrounding this book was a really intriguing one and it was really nice to see how Birdie fit in with the other characters in the town of Liberty. I liked Hugh to a certain extent, but I did kind of prefer Birdie and I felt that her personality really fit in with what I learned of her past. Hugh was also an interesting character, but he was a bit less sympathetic.

I did like quite a lot of the other characters in this book. Theodora amused me at times and I liked her sometimes rough personality. Her interactions with Birdie were sweet, though I would have liked to read a bit more about Justice, rather than having the stories she tells Birdie glossed over.

What was also interesting was how Justice seemed to be a character as well, even though she didn’t actually make an appearance. She was such a big part of Birdie’s decision to go to Liberty, and such a big part there, that I felt like I was getting to know her as well.

It was also nice to see the characters from the prequel. I haven’t read it, but I liked Blossom and I would have liked to see more of her. I did also like Maede. Even when she seemed harsh, I could understand why.

It was good to see that Birdie did suffer the consequences for her actions, even though it made things really difficult for her. I did feel sorry for her at times, but it was hard not to see the other points of view.

There were quite a few emotional scenes in this book and parts of it that were really quite intense to read. The ending probably wasn’t completely realistic, but I still really liked it and I think this is a world I would like to revisit at some point in the future.

Conan The Barbarian

Conan The Barbarian

(This review may contain spoilers).

Conan is one of those well-known film/book series that I don’t actually remember where I first heard about it. I have a fairly vivid memory of reading some of the books from the library, but I think I saw at least part of one of the original films first.

I saw this particular version of the film originally at the cinema, but I saw it again on television today. I felt it was a particularly good film. I liked the actor who played Conan. Some of the humour and banter in this film worked particularly well to break up the moments of violence and gore.

I did feel there was quite obviously eye candy in this film. A lot of the actors were wearing quite revealing clothing at various points. But the fighting scenes were quite well done and I felt there was a lot of nice character development going on.

It was interesting to see that there was some attempt to humanise the villain, but it didn’t work a great deal. I still really disliked him. I would have liked to see more of the daughter, though. There were a couple of moments where she showed her own personality, but I didn’t feel that she was quite as well-rounded as she could have been.

It was good to see Conan’s history and how he became the person he was. There was less of the barbarian than I was used to from the original books and from the older films, though. He wasn’t civilised, but he wasn’t quite what I would have expected.

There were some particularly effective scenes in this film. I particularly liked the sword fighting scenes and I felt that Conan’s history and how he became the person he was as an adult were explored really well. This is a film that I do have on DVD and would probably watch again at some point in the future.

Interstellar

(This review may contain spoilers).

I was quite intrigued by the plot of this film when I originally saw it advertised. I tend to like quite a different variety of genres of films, like I do with books/television series.

It was interesting to see that this film began after the problems started with the world, rather than showing how society got to that point. It was probably unnecessary to go into a huge amount of detail, considering the state the world is in right now.

This film didn’t have a really unique plot, but I felt that it was still entertaining even so. There were a lot of nice moments of tension in this and I liked the relationship between the main character and his daughter… though it was a bit disappointing that there was less time spent developing his relationship with his son.

This film did require quite a lot of suspension of disbelief, but it was interesting how things fit together as the film went on. It was also good to see the time difference used on the different planet – even though the idea of one hour being seven years back home was quite a scary one.

There were quite a few technical terms in this that I didn’t always understand, but for the most part, I was able to follow the movie.

I recognised quite a few of the actors in this film and although I saw a few things coming in this, the film was still entertaining to watch with a good storyline and nice interactions between the characters. There were some quite intense moments and I was drawn into the film quickly. It dd hold my attention throughout and although I probably won’t watch it again, it was definitely interesting enough to watch once.

The Giver (Book Review)

The Giver Book

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I actually originally read this book when I was at school. I remember it having quite a different cover, but when I started reading this book again, I found myself remembering a lot of the storyline.

The idea behind this book was a pretty unique one. It was the first book I ever read that was about a dystopian society and it was also a book that stayed with me for quite a long time.

I really liked Jonas as a character, although I felt his evolution wasn’t as strong as it could have been. It seemed very much like there was one event in particular that was the turning point, rather than that he realised the society wasn’t perfect gradually.

It was interesting to see Jonas’ relationships with the other characters and particularly with his family. The way the society differs so much from today’s society is actually a really interesting thing to see.

I think it would have been nice to see more of the other characters, particularly Asher and Fiona. Although the film had some issues, I did like the fact that it did more with the minor characters.

I also particularly liked Lily as a character. She was quite sweet and I would have liked to see more of her interactions with her brother. I also really liked Jonas’ relationship with Gabriel. The ability to give and receive memories was quite an interesting one.

It was quite interesting to see the different types of jobs there were in this society and how the family units worked. I also liked the hints of the Giver’s personal life.

The book had a bit less action than the film, but I felt it worked fairly well as a character-driven story. The ending was quite ambiguous, but I did find this book to be a really easy read. If there are other books set in this world, I would probably read them. And I’d also read other books by this author at some point in the future.

The Commons: The Journeyman

The Commons The Journeyman

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would. The blurb sounded intriguing, but I thought it would be a fairly complicated read and that I wouldn’t necessarily get behind the characters. As it was… all of the journeys that there were in this book were really intriguing and I found myself eagerly reading to find out what would happen next.

I found Zach a particularly interesting character. I felt the author did quite a good job of showing what the world was like for an autistic child, both through the eyes of the child himself and through the eyes of his mother.

The idea of the Commons was a really unique one. I really liked Ken and Po as characters. It was interesting to learn what Po’s origins were… but I would have liked to know what Ken’s were as well. I also quite liked Porter as a character, though I would have liked some more information about where his powers had actually come from.

I did have a couple of confusing moments in this book and I still had some questions by the end of it. I did really like Annie’s relationship with Zach. I felt that her protective instincts came across really well.

I also did like Paul as a character. His whole relationship with the Commons was really interesting as well.

I did think there were quite a few creepy moments in this book, particularly the one where Zach was going down the staircase. The Commons itself was an intriguing mix of fantasy and horror. I would have liked to be able to see more of the world and how everything fit together.

I would definitely like to see more of the world and its characters. Although the book had a ‘proper’ ending, I feel there could be so much more of the world and the characters explored. And, of course, there would be other Journeys to follow. I found this book to be really well-written. It doesn’t fit neatly into a category, but I still found it a quick and easy read. I recommend giving it a try if you’re on the fence about it.

Tour Banner (5)

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I did really like the front cover of this book and I thought the blurb sounded really intriguing. Unfortunately, I couldn’t really connect that well with the main character, Lucy. There was a lot of repetition in the fact that she was ‘cute’… and a couple of times at quite inappropriate moments. (Like when she was being chased. A few of the other random thoughts made sense… but when you’re running from someone, I think it’s unlikely you’d be thinking about how cute you were). There were also times I felt she came across as really shallow.

The storyline itself was quite intriguing. There was an interesting air of mystery about the book and I felt that that the whole hot and cold thing was a really interesting one.

I particularly liked Wanda as a character and it was a shame that I didn’t see much of her. Daphne was intriguing as well… but I felt there wasn’t much seen of Sara. I couldn’t really see her as a character.

Morgan was interesting, to an extent, but I felt she was described as being just a bit too perfect. I would have liked a bit more history about her friendship with Lucy. (I kind of felt that Lucy was a bit too willing to drop her friends).

I found Puck to be quite an interesting character. I would have liked to know a bit more about him and his family, who seemed to be quite strange anyway. Plus, it would have been nice to know if his name had any specific meaning. (His personality/attitude seemed to fit quite well with the character of Puck…)

The Grey area was quite interesting, as was the whole concept of the Mors. It was quite interesting to read about the whole explanation, though I would have liked some of the answers early on.

I didn’t mind Zack as a character, but I was less thrilled with the romance. It seemed a bit too… convenient. I did feel that the responses of Lucy’s parents fit really well… at least they cared about her. At least mostly.

I’m not sure if I’d read a sequel to this book. I’ll have to wait and see what my feelings are if one is written.

Songs in The Year of The Cat

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I found this book to be a really fascinating read. Although it was the third in a series, I still found it really easy to follow and I was pulled really easily into the world and its characters.

The front cover was helpful, because it gave me some idea of what the cat people might look like. I found it quite fascinating that there were different types of of big cats used as the basis. For instance, they weren’t all tigers, or leopards, or cheetahs… I would have liked a bit more detail about how it was possible for the different types of big cat to breed together, though.

I was quite intrigued to see that the culture of the cat people had roots in Japanese (and probably Chinese as well) culture. I would have liked to see a bit more detail about how those cultures were formed… as well as what the cultures of the other kingdoms were like.

By the end of the book, I was quite fond of a lot of the characters, even though there were times I got confused by the different names used for them. I really liked Setse and her brother. I would have liked to see a bit more of them together and their history. I also really liked Fallon. Some of what she came out with made me smile.

This book was quite well-written and I could picture a lot of the events happening in my mind. Probably because I came into this world on the third book in, I was very confused about Kirin’s relationship with Sherhann, among other things.

The situation with the Ancestors was pretty interesting and I would have liked to see a bit more about how they related to everything.

It was interesting to note the different characteristics that were linked to the animal parts, such as the movement of the tails and the claws. I did notice that there was a lot of, ‘For the cats were…’ sentences, which I felt was unnecessary, since those sentences were usually preceded by an example of what the cats were. (Superstitious, for instance).

At some point in the future (when I have much less to read), I would like to read the other books in this series. This was an engaging, fascinating world and it would be nice to see where the characters go next.

The Rise of Chaos Review Opportunity Button

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I found the front cover and blurb of this book to be really intriguing. I also found myself pulled into the first part of the story. It was really engaging and I found myself quite fascinated by the storyline.

Unfortunately, chapter one took a lot of the mystery out of the book. I felt that there was a lot of eposition/info-dumping… and unfortunately, it did continue throughout the book. I felt like there was a lot of telling rather than showing.

Some of the characters in the book were quite interesting, even though I couldn’t really get behind Anastasia. I didn’t find her a very good narrator… particularly with the whole implications that pretty much every mixed-gender friendship would result in an ‘awkward moment’. That kind of struck me as wrong, to be honest.

I liked the idea of the different gifts and abilities. It was nice to see the different things that the characters could do. However, I did feel that Anastasia had a few too many abilities, which is one of the warning signs in an original character – when they’re more overpowered than the others. It wasn’t to ridiculous levels, but even so, it’s something that can be a red flag for me.

I actually quite like the concept of reincarnation in fiction and it was interesting to learn about people living different lives. I didn’t think it was explained enough about why the population keeps growing if everyone’s getting reincarnated, though.

I was a bit less thrilled about the concept of soulmates. I’ve seen it used well exactly once, but most of the time, it just feels like, ‘they’re together because they’re soulmates’ and there’s none of the development for the romance. At the same time, the whole concept of the Pure Ones and their soulmates were pretty interesting.

I really liked Steven and Ryan as characters. It would have been nice to see more of them. I also found Anastasia’s mother to be quite an intriguing character. I felt that the author did a really good job in showing the effects her marriage had on her.

The action parts of the book were good, but I wish there had been more of them. I’m not sure if I’d read the next book in this series. A lot depends on who the story focuses on.

Blog tour (4)

(I received a free copy of this book in exchane for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I’ve always been quite fascinated by the myths and legends of the ancient world. I used to get books with myths and legends in… like when I went to Germany and came back with several myths and legends books. Or when I got books of Scottish myths and legends.

But Greek has always fascinated me the most, to be honest.

I did find the main character of this book to be quite an intriguing character. There were a few occasions in the book where I was confused about what was going on. Even reaching the end, I still didn’t have all of my questions answered.

The other characters in the book were really interesting, though I particularly didn’t like the priests. It was really interesting to see glimpses of the Greeks gods, though there were times when I wasn’t sure exactly what was going on with them. It was intriguing to see just how contradictory Apollo was, in particular. I felt he fit in with the kind of mental picture I had of his personality from reading the myths. Pan did as well to a certain extent, but I was confused about his relationship with the other gods.

I did feel that there was a lot of research that had clearly gone into this book. I felt the author did a really good job of showing what that time was like. There were parts of the book that I could really empathise with the POV character. It was nice to see that she wasn’t perfect… that she did make mistakes and that not everything worked out. It was good to see that free will played quite an important part in this book.

I wasn’t too keen on Sophia as a character in this book. I felt she didn’t really act like a very good friend for a lot of the time.

It was also really good to see King Leonides and the battle of the three hundred. I liked the way the prophecies were linked into that.

The questions at the end of the book were quite interesting and I felt that most of them would be good for a discussion of this book. I would probably read the second book in this trilogy at some point in the future.
