Shadowboxer

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I quite enjoyed reading this book, even if it did have the fluctuating first person and third person POVs. It was good to see both of the storylines and how they ultimately converged together.

Jade was an interesting character and it was good to see that she didn’t turn into a puddle of goo (sometimes literally) when she was around her crush. I think my favourite part was when she went to Thailand. I liked the relationships she formed with the children there and it was also good to see that Jade liked cats. I liked her right from the start, with her reaction to a cat being mistreated.

The supernatural elements in this book were pretty intriguing. I particularly liked the concept of the forest and the creatures there were in the forest. It was a pretty unique idea to have the animals take on human form and I felt really sorry for Luck. I would have liked to see a bit more of him.

I liked Mya as a character, but I didn’t really know what age she was for a while. I also didn’t realise at first when the storylines were merging together, because Mya wasn’t described at all until the first time Jade saw her.

The minor characters were intriguing, but I would have liked to see more of them during the book, particularly the children Jade met in Thailand. I did particularly like Shea as a character and I would have liked to see more of him. I didn’t know much about his past, but I did like how his relationship formed with Jade.

I did notice some errors in the writing, but it was good how the dialogue reflected the life of the characters and how they’d grown up. I was pulled easily into the storyline and there were some really intense moments in this.

If there’s a sequel to this book, I would definitely read it. I’d also check out other books by this author in the future. This was a really entertaining book that I read pretty quickly. There’s a bit of disjointedness with the two storylines, but they’re still pretty easy to follow.

Exodus: Of Gods and Kings

Exodus Of Gods and Kings

(This review may contain spoilers).

Having watched Noah, I was kind of wary about seeing another film based on events from the Bible, but when I saw the trailer for this film, it intrigued me enough to want to give it a chance… and I talked my dad, sister and younger brother into going with me.

This film was actually a really good interpretation, in my opinion. There were certain things I knew that my dad didn’t like (such as Moses’ lack of a staff and the use of ‘B.C.E.’ in terms of time frame), but apart from that, it stuck very close to the original account.

Having God shown as a child was an interesting interpretation. I’m not sure I entirely agree with it, but I was pleased to see that there were certain things that weren’t just brushed off. Although many of the plagues were linked to each other, I felt that, despite the scientific explanations, it was fairly clear that there was a force directing them.

With some of the more minor characters, I did find myself getting confused at times. I felt that Aaron, especially, and Joshua, weren’t shown enough to make me able to discern them from all of the other bearded men in the film.

It was hard not to feel sorry for Ramses at times in this film. Parts of this were really similar to the Prince of Egypt movie, but I was a bit disappointed that not much of Ramses’ and Moses’ relationship was explored before Moses found out the truth of who he was.

There were quite a few recognisable actors in this film, but many of them didn’t have much of a part, when I felt they could have been explored a bit more. There were quite a few emotional scenes in this and although I wish Moses and his wife had been shown interacting a bit more before they got married, I did think their relationship was quite sweet.

All in all, this was a good film to watch with nice costumes and mostly faithful to the original account in the Bible. I’m not sure I’d watch the film again any time soon, but it was nice to see it with at least some members of my family.

Worm Winds of Zanzibar

Worm Winds of Zanzibar

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Although this book was the second one with these characters, I still found it really easy to follow… helped in part, I think, by the explanation at the beginning of the book; but the book came across as a self-contained story in its own right.

The concept of daydreaming yourself into another world is a really intriguing one. I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t get to see much of the world itself, but I did find Zanzibar a really intriguing world. The cultural differences came across really well, particularly in how the Sultan had to handle himself with the people around him and how he seemed to be so desperate for a true friend, he latched onto the only person who didn’t seem to want anything from him.

I felt the politics came across really well in this book, but there were times I forgot what the point of them being in the world was. I also wasn’t really sure what to make of Kelly. Alex did screw up, but I kind of felt she’d been stringing him along at times.

I quite liked Alex as a character, at least for most of the book… I wasn’t so sure about the ending. I was a bit disappointed there wasn’t more of an effort made to save the rest of the people of Zanzibar, particularly the citizen who helped Will and Tanya.

I really didn’t like Henry as a character. He was irritating and really insensitive. Some of what he came out with might have been funny… but not constantly. I couldn’t really understand why Alex had become friends with him.

I was glad to see that there was an explanation for the language barrier and a way for Alex and his friends to communicate that made sense. However, there’s one mention of Alex’s translator adjusting the way he words things… but although that would be a useful tool, it’s never mentioned again through the book.

I liked the clash of different attitudes – such as Kelly’s opinion about slaves; Alex in the uncomfortable position of facing violence he isn’t used to. I also really liked the addition of the angels… in particular a specific archangel.

The world of Zanzibar felt more real to me than Alex’s world. I would like to read the book before this one… and it would be good to see where the characters go next; and if they can grow and mature as people as the book progresses.

The Wicked + The Divine Volume 1

The Wicked + The Divine Volume 1

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Since I absolutely adore ancient mythology – and comic books at the moment – I pretty much jumped at the chance to read this, because it sounded absolutely fascinating and definitely like something I would be interested in.

It turned out that that was entirely accurate… but I still don’t really understand why the twelve gods were reincarnating and then dying after two years. Yes, they were pop stars… but it didn’t really make a lot of sense exactly why they were there and how they were supposed to affect so much chance in humanity.

The entire concept in this book was really pretty cool. I found myself empathising with Luci, even if I would have liked to learn some more about her past and exactly how she (and the others) realised they were the deities… and not completely insane.

Although the friendship between Luci and Laura did seem disjointed at first, I did find myself believing in it by the end of the book, which affected me more than I thought it would. I think, in many ways, it showed just how damaged a person Luci truly was.

One of the things I found really interesting was how the three aspects of the Morrigan were shown. I would have liked a bit more detail about the interpretations of the different gods. There’s one point where Laura’s looking up information on her phone and I felt that could have been utilised in a much more effective way.

I did also really like the artwork in this book. There were some quite creepy moments, particularly in the first scene. There was a lot of violence (quite over the top most of the time), but I felt it was shown in really effective ways.

I’d probably read the other volumes in this series at some point in the future. I’d really like to see where the characters end up going next.

Luminae Volume 1

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

So… I have to be honest here. If I hadn’t read the blurb of this, I probably wouldn’t have had a clue about what was going on.

The art was actually really good and what I could follow of the storyline was intriguing, but although this was apparently volume one, I felt that I’d been plunged partway into the story without any idea of the background or how the characters knew each other.

There were some really nice renderings of scenes and characters and there was a nice variety of characters with different appearances. There was a lot about the plots and characters that would have drawn me in if I’d had a bit more of an idea about what was going on.

I think seeing some more of the other characters’ background would have been good, as well as not having the storyline jump around so much. Although a lot of detail had gone into the world visually, I only had the images of what the world was like and not any history/information about the world itself.

I don’t think I’ll read the next volumes in this series unless they’re less confusing. Having an already established group of characters does work… but there needs to be some explanation about what they’re doing all together if it’s that integral to the storyline. Because what I discovered by the end really didn’t make a whole lot of sense and I’m still left with the feeling that I’ve missed some major plot points.

Merry Christmas!

For me, Christmas Day is nearing its end, but there are other parts of the world where it’s still quite early in the day, so I thought I’d just send out some well-wishing for a Merry Christmas to you all and a Happy New Year!

I think I’ve already mentioned my main New Year’s resolution, but just to reconfirm:

By the end of next year, I will have Ice Warriors: Key of Midgard ready and at least starting to submit to publishers.

So far, I’ve really only had two novels (or novella in the first case) that I’ve attempted to submit to publishers. I’ve got a whole host of them on my laptop that have been just started, or have a beginning and a middle but no ending. The first book of Ice Warriors nearly fell into one of those two categories, but I do now have the first draft saved on my laptop. Unfortunately, I’ve realised I need to rework almost the whole thing, which is an almost depressing amount of work given how long the first draft took me to work on.

One of the many problems I realised I had was that I had no idea of the settings of the stories. Or how the characters were connected. I didn’t really think about how I was going to figure it all out… and then I went to a convention in October and discovered this:

Lupinemagic Art

Now… there’s a whole host of little notebooks that the owner of this page sells. All different sizes, but if you look through the pictures, you can see just how pretty they all are. And they’re all themed, too!

While I was at the convention, I realised that the little A7 sized notebooks (or journals) were actually really good for character and world building, if I limited myself to one page maximum for each profile/heading. Best of all? Ice Warriors is heavily steeped in Norse mythology and my first two notebooks were Thor and Loki themed. (Yes, Marvel… but… Thor. And Loki).

If you get a chance, check out the page and see what she has for sale. There are all sorts of things and my personal opinion is that they’re really pretty. Maybe expensive… but it’s all well-made and definitely good value for money.

In the meantime… wish me luck with Ice Warriors. What New Years resolutions do you have?

Titan’s Fire

Titan's Fire

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I nearly wasn’t able to finish reading this book, because it got wedged down the side of the sofa. I managed to extricate it, though.

Ideally, I’d give this book 3.5 stars. The plot was entertaining and kept me engaged throughout the course of the book. There were a few times that I got confused with some of the characters, though.

This was a fairly interesting alternative world imagining of that time period. I liked seeing the different types of science and technology that was used. I would have liked to see more of the airships and how they differed to normal airplanes.

I did like quite a few of the soldier characters in this and it was interesting to see the similarities between Sullivan and Faulke, the only real difference in them being the side they were on.

There were some really creepy moments in this book, especially with the experiments. The descriptions of those were really well-written… and very disturbing.

I would have liked a bit more background on the enemy and some evidence that there are good and bad people on both sides in a war.

I probably would read the other book/s in this series at some point in the future. This was a fairly quick, easy read and there were interesting characters whose fates I cared about. I’d like to see more of those characters and the world in general.

The Well of Tears

The Well of Tears

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I was quite intrigued by the plot of this book, so when I had a chance to read it through NetGalley, I immediately leaped at that chance. And although there were some parts of this book that were disjointed, I was able to follow the storyline quite easily.

I did really like Alwen as a character and her son, daughter and husband were perhaps the strongest characters in this book. I also liked Odwain, to a certain extent, but one of the later scenes with him kind of rubbed me completely wrong, because it seemed to completely derail his character.

It was really nice to see the main character a woman, rather than a teenage girl. Although there’s nothing wrong with teenage heroines, I do find that a lot of books with them as the central character to be Mary Suish.

One of the biggest issues I had with this book was that there was no air of mystery. It’s made clear straight away who the bad guys are, but although there was some attempt made to humanise one of them, I didn’t know enough about her to see why she’d gone in that direction. And the good guys didn’t seem prepared to do anything, even when knowing who the bad guys were.

I really liked Rhys as a character. I felt that the story could have focused a bit more on him, but I really liked his and his sister’s relationship with their father and mother. It was good to see an established family who actually cared about each other.

I have to be honest… I didn’t really understand the whole point of the prophecy. Why this king in particular? How did they know that this was the right time? These were all questions that could have been answered during the course of the book and I was disappointed not to see that kind of explanation.

Fergus and Finn were interesting characters, but it took a while to figure out what their relationship to each other was. I did like the use of the fay in the book and I felt that the author kept them true to the original mythos.

I would like to read a sequel to this book, but I’d like to see more explanation as to what was going on. By the end of the book, I’m still not entirely sure who the prophecy’s meant to be ultimately benefiting and why.

Santa Claus The Movie

Santa Claus The Movie

(This review may contain spoilers).

I don’t recall having actually seen this movie before, though there were a couple of scenes that looked familiar, so I think I’ve seen bits and pieces of it in the past.

This film was a good one to watch to get into the mood for Christmas. It was interesting to see the origins of Santa Claus in this film. I particularly liked Patch as a character. He was definitely my favourite.

It was nice to see Santa Claus’ relationship with Joe and Cornelia. It was also good to see the friendship that sprang up between the two children… despite how strange it was for Cornelia to call Joe, ‘Little boy’, when they were pretty much the same age.

I liked the reindeer in the film, though it was a bit disappointing that Rudolph wasn’t involved. There were a couple of things I felt weren’t really necessary/made things more convoluted than they needed to be.

There was really only one actor that I recognised in this film, though it was quite interesting to see him in a different role. This film is quite an old one, but the special effects weren’t bad, considering the time it was made in.

I watched this film with my niece and my sister and it was a good one to watch for Christmas, in my opinion. There were some really sweet moments in this, even if it was corny in some parts.

Dumb and Dumber To

Dumb and Dumber To

(This review may contain spoilers).

I remember watching the first Dumb and Dumber film quite a long time ago and then I watched part of it again recently when it was broadcast on television.

There were some quite amusing moments in this film and I’ve always liked Jim Carrey as an actor. It was a pity there wasn’t any of his serious side shown, though, which has come through in many of his comedy films.

I didn’t think this film was as good as it could have been. There was a lot of toilet/easy humour in this and less that came from the characters and the situations they found themselves in. There were quite a few cringe-worthy moments in this, too, as well as some that I felt were a bit cruel.

It was amusing to see Penny and the sort of comments she came out with, but there wasn’t much of an explanation for that kind of personality/intelligence by the end.

There were quite a few actors I recognised in this film, apart from the two main ones. There wasn’t a lot of surprises in this – many things were shown in the film trailer. I did find myself laughing at some of the plot points… but there were a lot I did cringe at, too. Still, even though it’s not a film I would buy on DVD, it was still one I found quite entertaining to watch.
