Wapasha and The Rabbi

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I think I know bits and pieces about the Jewish faith, so I did find this book to be quite an informative read. I did feel that, although there were bits and pieces of action, a lot of the story was told in dialogue form… and although I did try to pay attention, I found myself skimming over the numerous stories. I do feel that telling the stories in flashback form would have drawn me in a lot easier than a stream of constant story-telling within the book.

I found the culture of the characters to be quite a fascinating one. The author did a good job of showing bits and pieces of both Wapasha’s culture and the Rabbi’s. There were bits and pieces of information that I found really quite intriguing – especially with the translations provided for the prayers and suchlike.

There was a nice variety of characters, though I did get a little confused with who some of them were at times. It was also nice to learn more about their work on the farm… and how they provided for themselves in the preparation of the meat to sell as Kosher.

I did feel that the author did a good job of showing Wapasha’s PTSD. I would have liked to see a bit more of that with the Rabbi. He was able to recognise the effects in Wapasha, but it would have been good to see Wapasha do the same.

I did find myself more drawn into Chaim’s story than any of the others. While I think it was a good concept to create bonds through sharing stories of the past, as I said earlier, I would have preferred to see the past told at least in flashbacks.

The book was fairly well-written, though I did notice a few issues with the formatting. It was good to see the details of Wapasha’s past… but it was really only him and the Rabbi who seemed to have more complicated histories.

I’m glad I received a copy of this book and was able to read it… but I’m not sure this would be a book I’d read again as it stands right now.

Wild Card

(This review may contain spoilers).

I originally saw Jason Statham in Death Race, but since then, most of the time, he’s the villain in what I see him in. I was intrigued to see him playing the central character in a film.

I was a bit surprised by how much violence there was in this movie. I don’t mind strong violence (though I have an aversion to torture), but there was considerably more than I was expecting.

I found Nick’s character to be quite an intriguing one. I felt that he came across as quite a well-rounded person. I was fascinated by his past and I would have liked to know more about him and how he knew the other people he clearly had connections with.

There were some parts of this film that I found confusing – I was a bit lost when Nick was playing Blackjack, for instance. I found some of the motivations of the other characters a bit harder to follow… and I think there were only a couple of characters I really liked in this.

I did recognise a couple of the other actors and there were parts of this film that were intense and drew me in as I was watching. In a way, I was disappointed in the ending, since it was left very open-ended… I would have liked to see how things went for Nick later on.

I did think there was a lot of action in this and a lot that was going on. I feel it’s a film a sequel could be made of. Although I don’t intend to watch this movie again, I would probably watch a sequel.

Eternity

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

It was quite a refreshing change to read a book that’s a paranormal romance but without any vampires. Though it was quite close with werewolves.

I always find reincarnation a really interesting concept, so it was pretty cool to read a book where it was a primary thing. I did like Stella and Roman as characters, but I did feel that there was a bit too much telling rather than showing, especially when it came to things about Stella’s past.

I would have liked to see more of Roman’s relationship with his ‘brothers’. Because a lot more time was spent on the romance, I felt that the family aspect of it was missed out quite a bit… so certain things didn’t affect me as a reader in the way they would have done if I’d been able to connect a bit more emotionally to the family dynamic.

It was interesting to see the Egyptian pantheon and I was intrigued to see how the author portrayed the gods from that… though I noticed it was fairly obvious who the ‘bad’ guys were. (I notice a lot with Greek mythology, too, that the villains are always the same…)

I can’t say I was too thrilled by the police force. It seemed to me that they were incompetent at best… and sexist/discriminatory at worst. It would have been nice to see more than the character who’s going to be the heroine in book two actually come across as one of the ‘good’ people.

I did like the romance aspects here. Although I felt the passage of time jumped a bit too much, I could believe in the relationship forming between Roman and Stella… even if I did feel a bit dizzy sometimes due to the mood swings both characters exhibited.

The book was mostly well-written, with good descriptions, but I did notice that there was a bit of scene jumping, which distracted me a bit when I was with one character grouping and suddenly with another one.

I did enjoy reading this book. I have the second one ready on my Kindle to read and it was a fairly unique plot idea. But I would have liked to see more of the family bonds and history along with the romance.

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I haven’t read the first book in this series, but I still found this a really easy book to follow. Although there were quite a lot of different things going on in the story, I felt that the authors did a good job of exploring each different character arc.

I liked Syl a lot as a character, though I didn’t really like Ani. Even by the end of the book, I felt that Ani was a lot weaker than Syl was. I didn’t like how she interacted with the other Novices in the Sisterhood.

It was interesting to see the first book summarised in what was almost an article. I liked learning about the different powers that the Sisters had, even if I didn’t like many of them – though it would have been nice to see more of some of the actually ‘good’ characters.

I liked having the opportunity to see how things were going on Earth after the invasion and with the resistance. I was a bit disappointed to see that there didn’t seem to be that many of the good aliens.

I was a bit confused by how Syl fit in with everyone, but I liked the fact that she was intelligent enough to figure out how to try and get information from the Sisterhood. I would have liked to see a bit more of the lessons the lesser-Gifted students had, too.

I particularly liked the parts of the book with Paul and the rest of his team, though it seemed strange to me that the enemy would recruit those who fought against them. I did particularly like the hints of friendship between Peris and Paul. I also liked Tiray, to a certain extent… although I would have liked to learn a bit more about his character and motivations.

I would have liked to see more of the secondary characters, in particular Stephen and Alis and Thul and Rizzo. There were a couple of things in this book I saw coming, but others that did come as a surprise to me – and a surprise that actually made sense.

I would definitely like to see more of this world and the characters. I’d like to read the first book in the series at some point in the future.

Review Opportunity: Beautiful Curse

Beautiful Curse

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I think I’ve stated in the past that I really like the ancient myths. Eros and Psyche is one of my favourite legends, so I was really eager to read this when I was offered the opportunity to do so.

I have to say, first off, that the cover of this book is gorgeous. Even before I knew what the book was about, I found myself drawn to it simply based on the cover alone. That doesn’t happen all that often, because covers can often be quite misleading… but this one, I felt, did fit with the story very well.

This was an interesting change-up to the myth of Eros and Psyche. There were elements I recognised, but I found myself confused by exactly how and why Mya was cursed with otherworldly beauty. And for a lot of the book, I didn’t really understand why Ross had been drawn to her originally – I felt that, when Mya went to live in the castle, it moved too fast for the emotions to come across as really real, I felt.

I did find it quite easy to relate to Mya as a character. It was good to see that there were things she could and couldn’t do outside of the fact that she was beautiful… even though, throughout everything was I reading, all I could think was a particular Mary Sue test that points out that being pretty is not a disability. No, not even if everyone hates her/wants to have sex with her because of it. I did feel there was a bit too much of that here. In a way, I could understand the other students (because people can be cruel), but it seemed weird that even the teachers treated her differently and I felt it was too much like the cliched, ‘Poor character has an awful past’.

Wow… that was long. I actually found it interesting how people commented that Mya’s beauty didn’t look natural, but I didn’t feel the ending dealt with that satisfactorily.

I did think it was good to see the elements of the myth in the modern day, such as the tasks Mya had to do. And I did like how things were resolved at the end with Mya and Ross. I just think that it would have been good to see more development of the relationship. And less of ‘everyone acts the same’. I can’t speak for anyone else – but I don’t hate someone just because they’re better looking than me. Or feel jealous of them. Even if they look fake.

BEAUTIFUL CURSE

Out now from Swoon Romance.

Sixteen-year-old Mya Jones is cursed.

She is, hands down, the most beautiful creature on earth. But beauty can wound, and Mya finds herself reviled and shunned by her peers. If there is even a chance that she could start over, Mya longs to take it, no matter the risks.

So when the strange Mr. Merk offers her a new life away from home, Mya is hesitant but hopeful. Only she didn’t count on the mysterious Ross, or her feelings for him.

BEAUTIFUL CURSE is a contemporary retelling of the myth of Psyche and Cupid.

Royal Opera House: Swan Lake

ROHSwanLake

This is now the second version of the Swan Lake ballet I’ve seen. I recognised a lot of similarities to the Bolshoi Ballet version, especially when it came to the costumes and some of the effects used.

I really felt that the sets in this ballet for the palace and the lakeside were really beautiful. I felt the setting on the stage was really lovely and I did especially like the costumes and the dancing in this.

I did think that the character of Siegfried was too young and naive in this. I felt there were better ways he could have been deceived, especially because the dancer playing Odette/Odile was so good, I felt she portrayed the two different characters remarkably well. And my sister agreed.

I did feel that some of the dancing seemed to be merely placeholders to extend the ballet. It was really nice to watch (and I have a lot of respect for the amount of work the dancers do), but there didn’t seem a lot of point to some of the dancing. And there seemed to be a lot of the other dancers having to stand or sit around and just watch the ‘main’ dancers.

The storyline wasn’t as clear in this ballet as in the previous version I saw, but it was still beautiful to watch and the dancing was amazing. It did feel like there were real emotions in the dancing… and although the ending was confusing, this ballet was really good to watch and I did enjoy the journey.

Although alien invasions isn’t a unique plotline, I found this book to be quite an intriguing read – even if there did end up being two different first person POVs and one third person. Although it was interesting to see what happened from the two main characters’ points of view, I would have much preferred it if the book had stuck to third person… and definitely not switched between first and third.

I did find it quite easy to relate to the characters and I was as confused and uncertain about what was going on as they were. It was interesting to see how Brandon and Gracie each handled what had happened to them – and how each of their upbringing caused them to react in different ways.

I did feel that the blurb gave away a lot of the book. It was interesting to see how the characters got to that point, but I felt that it didn’t hold back a lot of the mystery.

I liked the interactions between Gracie and Brandon, but I did feel that Brandon’s character development, in particular, seemed a bit rushed. The time when he changed/matured felt as if it was glossed over.

The tentacled creatures/drones were really quite scary. By the end of the book, I had a little more understanding about their purpose… but not quite all that was going on. I would have liked some more answers to my questions.

There was quite a lot of action in this book that kept me reading throughout. I felt the author did a good job of showing the fallout of what happened and I couldn’t help feeling sorry for Jake.

I do think this book should have a sequel, since there was a lot that wasn’t explored that could have been. I would probably read a sequel, if there was one, at some point in the future.

Focus

(This review may contain spoilers).

I really love Will Smith as an actor – he’s probably one of my favourite actors. So although I had a selection of different films I was interested in seeing, I chose this one because I’ve seen and enjoyed films with Will Smith in in the past.

There was quite a bit about this film that made me think of the Real Hustle. It was interesting to see how the misdirection worked and that Nicky’s character could take on different roles/personalities depending on the hustle he was trying to do. There was one particular scene that came across as really intense, where I was caught up in the game that was being played.

I did spend a lot of the film thinking there was going to be more misdirection than there actually was. I liked the interactions between Nicky and Jess, but I was a bit disappointed that there wasn’t as much trickery involved as there could have been.

I would have liked to see more of the other characters who were working with Nicky at the beginning… and also about Jess’ partner. There were some quite clever scenes in this film and the actors did play well off each other… but I felt that so much more could have been done with it.

Review Tour (7)

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I did feel that this book was quite an intriguing one. I was a bit confused with how all the characters fit together at first, but as the book went on, I did find the connections easier to understand.

I was a bit confused, at first, as to how Guy, Saul and Gary knew about the box in the first place. Although I didn’t feel the question was fully answered, I did learn a lot about what was going on by the end of the book.

I found it fairly easy to picture the orbs (not the correct term, but I can’t recall the exact spelling of their name) in my head. Of course, they were described as jellyfish… which made for an interesting mental image.

It was good to see the relationships between the characters, though it was disappointing to see that a couple of them didn’t really have redeeming qualities and I was disappointed that they came across as completely villainous – I always find that the best ‘bad guys’ are the ones you can see the potential for good inside.

I did like reading about the relationship and closeness between Annie and Abby. I felt the author captured that ‘in-between’ stage really well – where they’re not quite children; but not quite teenagers, either. It was good to see some of the book from their perspective and I found there to be some quite intense, on-the-edge-of-my-seat moments with them.

I liked Saul as a character, but I did find it a bit difficult to picture him in my mind. It was a little bit like that with all of them, to be honest – I couldn’t get much of a grasp on the personal appearance of many of the characters. I liked the relationship Saul had with the animals who ‘adopted’ him and I especially liked Einstein.

I didn’t much like Emily through a lot of the book, even though there was an explanation for her behaviour eventually. I liked her a bit more towards the end of the book. I didn’t like Crystal at all… but Mitch did kind of grow on me a little by the end.

I did like the different kind of abilities, but even by the end of the book, I was left with some unanswered questions. I think it would be interesting to read a sequel to this book… or a prequel, exploring the origins of the box and the orbs a bit more.
