Realm of Spirits

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I felt that the blurb of this book was a really intriguing one and when I received my copy, I was drawn to the front cover. The illustration at the front of the book was really nice, too. I thought it was nicely coloured and the artwork was pretty.

I did find myself quite lost in the book, though. I kept being thrown into different characters’ heads, so I couldn’t really get to know any of the characters properly. I did find it interesting how the children were implanted into their mothers, but I didn’t get enough of a background as to what was going on. It was intriguing to see the different angels with the children, but I had no idea who any of them were. I thought at first they were just special children… but it was hinted at that they were reincarnations of… well, I’m not really sure what.

I would have liked to see a bit more about the setting of the story. It hinted that the book was set in Egypt and I did find the use of the Sphinx really interesting. The children didn’t really seem to be held back, though, since they could do everything as if they were adults already.

I would have liked quite a bit more detail about what was going on – and not each chapter written from a different POV, since the chapters were so short, I couldn’t get into a character’s head before I was being thrown into another’s.

The book was good for being thrown straight into the action, but it’s not that clear about what exactly’s happening and what the mothers are trying to do. I think this book could be expanded to be a bit longer and more detailed, as well as only focusing on one or perhaps two main characters. The Sphinx was an intriguing aspect, but I couldn’t see any true danger with Aurora facing off against it.

Fast and Furious

Fast and Furious

(This review may contain spoilers).

Again, I do want to watch all of the Fast and Furious movies… but one person commented that this movie was where the whole family dynamic started; and since I like family-themed things, I picked up this DVD from the supermarket.

It was good to see the familiar actors from the first movie. The characters all seemed to have changed a lot and it was good to see the direction their lives had taken.

At first, I didn’t like Brian’s character all that much… but he did grow more on me as the movie went on. I especially liked Brian and Dom interacting together. There was a kind of rivalry between them that seemed to evolve into mutual respect as the film went on.

The effects in this movie were pretty cool, especially when it came to the car races. I liked seeing Brian and Mia together, even if I felt Brian could have been a bit better towards Mia. And I would have liked to see a bit more of Dom and Mia interacting together.

There were a couple of other actors I recognised in this movie as well and it was good to see them heading to different countries. I was pulled into this film. I felt there were some really intense scenes and I could empathise really easily with the characters. I felt the actors played well off each other.

I don’t really know much about cars and car racing, but that didn’t really detract from my enjoyment of the film. I particularly liked the ending of this, too, though I felt that it ended on something of a cliffhanger.

Perception

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Having read the first two books in this series, I was really happy when I was offered the opportunity to read the third book in this series. Unfortunately, I didn’t finish it as soon as I would have liked… but I still enjoyed reading it when I was able to start.

I did feel that part of the first couple of chapters sounded really familiar… as if I’d read a couple of those lines in the previous book.

I found it really interesting to see the differences in Jocelyn’s two lives. It was interesting to see that neither of those were perfect realities and that both had their problems. The Jocelyn from modern times and the Jocelyn from the past seemed to come across as two different people at times, too.

I don’t agree with the way modern-Jocelyn’s mother and brother treated her when she chose to get engaged to Jackson… but at the same time, I can see why they would both be bothered. I have seen a couple who got married while one of them was quite young and there are parts of that relationship that didn’t seem too healthy. Although I could understand and believe in Jocelyn and Jackson’s feelings towards each other, I could also understand how concerned Jocelyn’s friends and family were… and I definitely don’t think Jackson and his family should have encouraged one of the things they did, since it ultimately made things a whole lot worse.

I found it intriguing how the two Jocelyns slipped into the speech from the other time – such as modern-Jocelyn becoming more formal and past-Jocelyn using more modern phrasing. I also found it interesting to learn more about Jackson’s past and how he was in his real high school.

In the past, I really felt a lot of sympathy towards Olivia and William. I would like to see more focus on their relationship, particularly given what they had to deal with on top of everything else.

I also liked seeing Nicholas and a bit more of Sidney. I’d be intrigued to see how things continue to develop in the next book/s in this series.

Cinderella

Cinderella(This review may contain spoilers).

I’ve always liked Disney films. I enjoy the happy ever endings and I felt that this film was a really good live-action version of the original Cinderella.

Although this did keep to the Disney cartoon version, I thought it was good that there were some interactions between Ella and the prince even before the ball. Although it seemed strange that Ella didn’t figure out his identity after it was oh-so-helpfully provided, I did like the way they had the opportunity to meet and that it wasn’t quite love at first sight.

I liked that the animals were in the film, too. The mice made me smile and when Ella’s fairy godmother appeared, I found parts of it quite amusing… if very sweet at times. It was amusing to see the goose tuned into the coachman and the lizards turned into footmen.

I thought it was interesting that the actual magic part was only a small aspect of the whole film. I thought it was good that more focus was put on the interactions of the characters. I also found it interesting that the stepsisters were ugly on the inside… but not on the outside.

There were some really nice scenes in this film and I really loved the music, particularly towards the end. I felt really sorry for Ella for a lot of the movie and I thought it was good how her kind nature still showed through, despite how she was treated. Perhaps that’s not very realistic… but I still thought it was good.

I recognised a couple of the actors in this movie and I really liked most of them as the characters they portrayed. There were some really nice costumes and special effects in this and there were some really emotional scenes that wrenched at my heart. I enjoyed the ending of this movie and I think it’s one I definitely wouldn’t mind watching again in the future.

Marvel’s Mightiest Heroes: Black Widow

Marvel's Mightiest Heroes Black Widow(This review may contain spoilers).

Having seen the Avengers movie and caught some information about Black Widow (or Natasha) through Hawkeye’s comic book, I was fairly eager to learn a bit more about her history and see more about her as a character.

I’ve noticed that it seems fairly normal in the Marvel universe for some heroes to start off as villains and then become heroes. I was quite intrigued to see Natasha as villain, semi-hero and then completely heroic.

It was good to see the different styles of comics that Natasha was a part of. The first two comics, while containing some scenes of violence, were much more family-friendly… while the next six were much darker in tone and in the violence that was shown.

I found myself empathising with Natasha quite a lot. She came across as a strong female character, though I noticed that she seemed more willing to get her hands dirty and battle in the later comics. In the first one especially (and in Hakweye’s version), she seemed to manipulate people more emotionally and let others do the violence. I found her evolution from the first comic to the final ones quite an intriguing one and it would be good to see more of her and about how she evolved as a character.

The pheromones thing in the final comic was quite an intriguing one and I thought it was interesting how Natasha knew what was going on, but couldn’t do anything to stop it.

I would have liked to know more about Natasha’s past, too. It was strongly implied that there were others who were Black Widows, but it seemed like Natasha didn’t ask for all the answers. I could understand why, but I still would have liked to learn a bit more about her history and what made her who she was.

It did seem that the later comics contradicted the earlier ones a little. That might be because I’ve only read part of the storyline, though.

I liked Natasha when she decided to get involved to save the girl who was being attacked. I didn’t like Phil’s character much, even though he did seem to be a little more likable towards the end.

It was also good to see more of the other characters from the comics and how Natasha interacted with them. This collection definitely made me interested in learning more about Natasha and it was interesting to see her history in the comics and read about her relationships with the others.

The Ark

The Ark

(This review may contain spoilers).

Considering the last film I saw based on the story of Noah, I was a bit hesitant about watching this one. I probably wouldn’t have watched it if my friend hadn’t wanted to and insisted I watched it with her.

I have to say, I was surprised by how much I liked watching this film. Although I felt there were some instances of too-modern language (‘lunatic escaping’, for instance), there was a really good, ancient historical feel to this film.

I liked seeing Noah’s relationship with his wife and sons. I was a bit disappointed not to see too much of the sons’ wives, although it was nice to see that each of his sons had their own personality.

I did feel some sympathy towards Noah’s family. The Bible story of Noah doesn’t really go into much detail about how Noah’s family reacted to the Ark and I felt this movie did a good job of portraying his family’s reactions. It was nice to see that, eventually, they all came together.

I found myself drawn into this movie really easily. I felt the actors did a really good job of portraying the characters they played. The setting came across really well, too, in my opinion. I found myself quite absorbed into this movie and I was able to understand and empathise with the characters.

There were a few actors I recognised in this movie, but it took me a little while to place one of them and two others, I’m still not sure where I saw them before.

I did think the film moved a little slow at the beginning, but as the storyline progressed, it seemed to all speed up a bit. I felt the movie ended at a good point… but I had originally thought it was going to be turned into a television series and was disappointed that it wasn’t.

The Fast and The Furious

The Fast and The Furious

(This review may contain spoilers).

Before I watched this one, the only film I’d seen from this franchise was Fast and Furious 5… which I don’t really remember much of, apart from drinking too much Diet Coke in the cinema. Since I intend to see 6 and 7 at the cinema in a double bill, though, and I got this for £3, I figured I’d buy it so that I had some familiarity with the storyline.

I’ve noticed that, with older films (not really old ones, but compared to movies made after 2000), there’s more time spent on the romances… and I definitely felt that was the case with this movie. There was good chemistry between the characters who were in relationships.

I found it easy to empathise with the characters in this film and I particularly enjoyed the friendship that formed between Dom and Brian. There were some really intense scenes in the movie that drew me in and made it easy to care about the characters.

I did like the car racing aspects in this. I found it interesting that Brian tried to barter for respect if he won… but that the respect came from his actions outside of the racing.

There were a few scenes that were quite horrible in this film. Nothing over-the-top gory, but definitely at least one I found myself unable too watch. The acting drew me in and I found it easy to see the emotions the characters were feeling, particularly when it reached the end of the movie.

There were quite a few actors in this who I recognised. Meeting Paul Walker’s character for the first time… it’s awful to think about what happened to him, but I feel that he (and the other actors in this) played off each other really well.

As mentioned above, I’m going to be watching other movies from this franchise soon. I put it off for a while, but I definitely feel it’s worth watching if you enjoy action films with a good storyline and characters and lots of cars.

The Dreams of Albert Winter: Spring

The Dreams of Albert Winter Spring

(I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I found this book one that was really quick and easy to read. Dreams have always been quite strange – and things that seem perfectly natural in dreams are so much weirder after a person wakes up… at least most of the time.

I did feel a lot of sympathy towards Albert for part of the first book, even though I felt it was right that he got into trouble for calling Lucy names (just because I think name-calling can become bullying if left unchecked and it’s not very nice to be insulting even if it’s supposed to be funny).

It was interesting to see Albert’s interactions with his parents, both in flashbacks and during actual scenes shown. There were a couple of scenes I found myself cringing at in this book, such as the appearance of the tarantula… and what Albert’s father said to him about the spiders. (It might be a fact, but I don’t think George Winter’s brain-to-mouth filter was properly engaged).

I could really see the difference between the real world and the dream world after Albert entered it. I found it interesting to see how some parts of the dream mirrored real life… while others were quite illogical, such as a parent-teacher conversation happening in another’s home and Albert, his dog and the Stickman pretending to be inanimate objects inside the room.

I was also fairly amused by the Stickman’s ability to change his appearance, such as looking like Legolas from Lord of the Rings… but holding a doughnut instead of a ring. And the real-world things that were exaggerated in the dream-world came across really well.

I liked how, towards the end of the book, Albert and the others had to work together to defeat the final ‘boss’. The ending of the dream was particularly sweet as well. I thought the chickens were quite a random aspect, but they made a certain kind of sense for the dream-reality.

I wouldn’t be adverse to reading more books by this author in the future. Having read this one, I expect my niece might enjoy it and I’ll pass it on to her to read next.

Midnight Star

Midnight Star

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I did think that the plot of this book was quite a unique one. The fact that the main character was a star was a really intriguing idea… but that was revealed in the blurb of the book and I felt it could have been left as a mystery a bit more.

I would have probably given this book four stars… but apart from the love triangle (I don’t like them, but I knew this was coming), I was a bit irritated by the fact that Vegas seemed to have a whole lot of characters in love with her/wanting to sleep with her. The love triangle itself wasn’t really bad and I did feel that the author did a good job of developing Vegas’ relationship with both Leo and Gage. I also felt that the history of Vegas’ and Leo’s relationship was a really interesting one.

Although there’s a much more scientific explanation for stars than the myths indicated, I liked how the explanation for the stars came across. I would have liked to know about the other stars in the constellation, though, and if they were immortal beings who were connected to Vegas.

Hydra was pretty creepy, but I would have liked a bit more explanation as to why the snake seemed particularly obsessed with Vegas. I know the prophecy and everything, but it did seem to be another one obsessed with Vegas. And I had a lot of trouble understanding what Hades was trying to do.

It was interesting to see many of the other characters from Greek mythology and I particularly liked how Apollo came across, despite the fact that Vegas was apparently his favourite along with everyone else’s. It was good to see some of the others, but a lot of them came across as jerks… and those seemed to be the ones who are always made out to be the bad guys in books based on Greek mythology.

I didn’t mind Vegas as a main character, but I felt there were times she came across as a bit shallow. I did like how it took her a while to figure out how to use her power… but she did seem to accept it a bit too quickly, especially when she jumped on her name being similar to the name of the star Vega.

Would I read a sequel to this book? I’d actually be more interested in reading a book about Vega’s and Leo’s history together. Without the obsession due to how different (and exotic) she looks in comparison to everyone else.

Seventh Son

Seventh Son

(This review may contain spoilers).

I’ve read one of the books in the Spooks series, but I haven’t read the first one, which was what this film was based on. I can’t say how close it stayed to the book, but I did find this movie an entertaining one to watch.

It was interesting to see the first scene with the trained apprentice. I like that actor in particular, so I was disappointed that he wasn’t seen more.

I did find Tom an intriguing character. I liked seeing his interactions with his family. It would have been good to see more of his brothers, considering he was the seventh son. I also couldn’t see much of a relationship between Tom and his father.

I liked Gregory as a character, too. It was good to learn bits and pieces of his past as the film went on. I also found Alice quite an intriguing character. It was good to see that not all of the witches were actually bad, even if that was what most people believed about them.

I found the romance very hard to believe, I have to say. I would have liked to see more development of the feelings throughout. I did like seeing Alice with her mother. Towards the end of the film, it was good to see more of the dilemma she faced, having to choose between her daughter and her sister.

I liked seeing Tom learning about being a Spook and I felt the training was interspersed nicely with the rest of the events of the film. I’m not sure I’ll watch it again, considering that I couldn’t believe in the relationship between Alice and Tom. I would have liked to see more of a focus on the family aspect, I think. Even so, it was an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours.
