I Robot

(This review may contain spoilers).

I originally watched this movie when it first came out at the cinema, but watching it on television now, I enjoyed it just as much as I did the first time.

Robots… and the three Laws of Robotics… aren’t a new concept, but I felt this was a fairly unique take on them. One thing I felt worked particularly well was the fact that the robots didn’t look human. They were humanoid, and in particular the newer models, but they could never be mistaken for human.

I found Detective Spooner to be a really good character. Apart from the fact that I like Will Smith as an actor, I thought it was an intriguing element to have an officer in the future dislike robots so much, it actually affects his work. As the film revealed more of his past, his dislike of robots made a lot more sense and gave him more depth as a character.

I especially liked Sonny’s character in this movie. I had a lot of empathy for him and I found his interactions with Spooner to be among the most interesting in this movie.

I did also like Calvin’s character, though there wasn’t as much of her background there. I saw the chemistry between her and Spooner and it was nice to see that there was very little actual romance.

I thought it was good to get a glimpse into what the world might look like in the future and the futuristic technology came across really well. It was also good to see how people did rely so much on technology; I think that’s true of the present time, too.

There were other characters who I would have liked to see more of. This film worked quite well as an action thriller, though. It was good to see that there was some humour in the movie as well… but the action definitely kept me engaged and I cared about the characters and their situation. Even having seen the movie already, there were some really intense scenes that kept me on the edge of my seat. And it’s a movie I would enjoy watching again.

Mr. Holmes

(This review may contain spoilers).

Although this movie doesn’t tend to be the kind of genre I usually watch, I was quite intrigued by the concept of this movie… by the trailer of it.

I’ve seen a couple of different adaptions of the stories of Sherlock Holmes, but I found this one to be especially intriguing. I thought it was good to see Sherlock Holmes at the end of his career and suffering from ailments, even while still trying to hold onto his mind and remember the details of his last case.

I felt Ian McKellan did a really good job of playing Sherlock Holmes and I felt he portrayed the character’s frustrations really well. It was also good to see the differences in the flashbacks to how Holmes was in the present day of the movie.

It was interesting to see Sherlock Holmes caring for the bees. I’m not particularly fond of buzzing things at all… but I can tolerate bees far better than wasps.

One of my favourite parts of this film was the relationship/friendship that built up between Holmes and Roger. I would have liked to see more of Roger’s relationship with his mother, but it was good to see him developing a closeness with Sherlock Holmes.

I found the flashbacks to be really intriguing, both to the final case and to his trip to Japan. I thought it was good to see elements of the Japanese culture and I could definitely understand Holmes wanting to fix his memories. It was good to see something of his intellect still showing through even later on his life.

I was a bit disappointed not to see more of Holmes’ friendship with Watson and there were quite a few elements of this movie that made me a bit sad. I did think there was good use made of foreshadowing and I did definitely find this movie entertaining and engaging to watch. It’s not the sort of thing I normally enjoy, but I’m glad I chose to branch out.

Demon and Fairy

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I did think that the blurb of this book sounded really intriguing, so I ignored the slight misgivings I had about the romance and requested a copy.

I felt that the book had a lot of potential, but the main romance didn’t really grab me. It came across too much as an insta!love connection and I felt that Kallisto was a rather bland character. I did find Seti to be a really interesting person and there were enough details about his past and relationships to the other characters that he came across as quite well-defined.

This book came across as part of a series and not the first book. There were characters mentioned but not really described. When Kallisto talks about her brothers, I was expecting to get to know some of them… but the book’s written as if assuming the readers have prior knowledge.

I liked the whole concept of the different worlds and it was good to learn more about the Chaos that Seti was battling with. And there were times I was able to empathise with him quite strongly in the book.

I do think that the book could have done with some serious editing. There were a lot of errors and clunky writing that a beta reader would have been able to catch and make the book more readable.

I found Azazel to be a really interesting character and I felt that his romance was much more believable. I would have liked it if there had been more focus on the two of them. I also would have liked to see more of Morgan’s character.

I did feel there was a bit too much telling, rather than showing, in this book. There were very few surprises or twists.

I did like the use of illustrations in this book, but there should have been more descriptions of the earlier characters. I didn’t think it was necessary to write a line from the narration under those illustrations. I did particularly like the one of the fairy, though.

I don’t know if I’d read any more books by this author in the future. It would depend on the plot and if there’d clearly been an editor.

The Invisible

(This review may contain spoilers).

I haven’t read the book this film is based on, or seen the Swedish adaptation of said movie… so this review is entirely based on the English adaptation.

The first thing I should say about this movie is that the blurb is fairly inaccurate. It suggests that the film’s plot is quite different to what it actually is. That having been said… this is a movie I have seen more than once. And watching it again with my friend made me remember how much I liked it.

Nick and Annie came from two vastly different worlds and I felt that the movie showcased that really well. Maybe half of the film was spent on showing the characters in their normal, everyday lives. Although it took a while for the movie to get to what the blurb promised, I felt the first half was just as intriguing as the second.

I found it easier to empathise with Nick than Annie. If I’d had any interactions with someone like Annie at school, she would have terrified me. At the same time, I appreciated being shown her home life. And it was interesting to see that she seemed to spend most of her life hiding.

Pete was a character I did feel sorry for… though he did come across as weak for a lot of the movie. Several of the minor characters were well-defined and I was able to empathise with them, even if I didn’t agree with what they said and did.

A lot of this movie made for really intense viewing. It was good to see Nick’s reactions to what was happening to him. I thought that the way he affected reality was shown in a really unique way.

I felt that the bond between Nick and Annie came across really well. There were parts of this movie that were difficult to watch and the whole storyline and characters affected me a lot.

I have mixed feelings about the ending. Even though it did work, I wasn’t very fond of it. Still, I did enjoy watching this movie. It was emotionally moving and well-acted. Ignore the blurb. Give it a try.

Shadowline Drift

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I was a bit surprised by how easy I found this book to read. I was drawn really quickly into the storyline and I was able to empathise with Jake really well.

The action started in this book almost straight away, with very little build-up. Although I would have liked a bit more background, especially with the interactions Jake had with the other characters he knew, I was able to follow what was going on really well. I did feel some sympathy for Jake… especially when finding out exactly why he was so small.

It was interesting to have the opportunity to see more of the Amazonian forest that Jake was in, though I did feel that there was a bit of telling rather than showing. I did think it was good to see something of Jake’s resourcefulness while he’s in the forest… and there’s a good bit of foreshadowing during the course of the book, too.

I found Pilar an interesting character, but I didn’t feel as if I got to know her very well as a love interest for Jake. Parts of the book, where Jake was in the compound, didn’t exactly feel real. Though it was good to see some of the culture of the tribe Pilar was studying, there were parts during that time that came across as almost dream-like.

I would have liked a bit more background on Jake, such as his relationship with his parents now and friends and work colleagues. I could certainly understand what drew him to visit the tribe at the start of the book and it was interesting to see him interacting with the members of the Tabna tribe and trying to learn about them.

I thought that the supernatural elements in this book added an interesting dimension, though the book did become more fantastical as the storyline went on. I felt that most of the characters were intriguing and I would have liked to know more about most of them.

It would be good to read a sequel to this book and see where Jake will go next… and if he’s truly out of danger now.

Journey of the Marked

Journey of the Marked

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I think I’d give this book 4.5 stars. I got a bit confused with the characters and the events going on at first (particularly to do with the marking), but as the book went on, I found myself drawn really easily into the world and the storyline.

There were a few different plots that did eventually converge with each other. I enjoyed learning about the different races there were on the planet and it was good to have information revealed in stages through the book, rather than all at once.

I was drawn more into the book when the five marked were all drawn together. I found myself intrigued by their different strengths and weaknesses and it was good to see that it wasn’t all about fighting. I found myself feeling really sorry for Kenrya… even though I’m sure she wouldn’t want someone to feel sorry for her.

I thought it was good to see the different cultures’ attitudes towards the young people who had been marked. It was good as well to see the different kinds of abilities/skill sets those different peoples were known for. I did like learning about the history of the planet and I also thought it was good to see that even the races who were considered ‘bad’ had reasons behind their behaviour… or that there was the potential for further development with some of the characters.

I really disliked Nord as a character. His attitude was an awful one and I couldn’t see any redeeming qualities to him. I had slightly different feelings towards Natal. He was a character I could understand a bit more.

I have to say, my favourite character was probably Tip. I enjoyed the fact that, although he wasn’t exactly a warrior, he still had valid skills and did work to save people. I also liked Jurth as a character… and it was nice to see him have a potentially surrogate father.

I really cared about the characters in this book and it was good to see them working together. I’d very much like to read the next book in this series at some point in the future. I definitely felt that it was worth reading.

Jurassic World

Jurassic World

(This review may contain spoilers).

I haven’t really watched the other movies in this franchise, but I was drawn in by the trailer of this one… and I’ve also enjoyed Chris Pratt’s work in previous films I’ve seen him in.

It was good to see the way the theme park worked and there were some fairly sweet scenes with children having the opportunity to ride some of the smaller dinosaurs.

I could, in many ways, understand the desire to keep people’s interest in a world where everything is overtaken by the next thing. I felt that lack of interest was demonstrated quite well in the way Zach kept using his phone… or making eyes at the pretty girls, instead of paying attention to the attraction. It was pretty cool to see the use of theme park-style rides, along with the almost museum-like quality of seeing the different types of dinosaurs.

One of my favourite parts of the movie was probably the raptors. It was good to see Owen’s interactions with them and the fact that he respected them as animals, while still caring for them.

I enjoyed seeing the brotherly relationship between Zach and Gray, especially towards the end of the movie. There were times I could empathise really well with the both of them… and it was pretty cool to see that they were resourceful, as well as the nods to the previous Jurassic Park movies.

There were some quite jumpy moments in this movie and several scenes that were really creepy. Although the gore level is quite low, there are still dinosaurs attacking people in this movie… and it’s fairly clear what’s happening.

Although the romance worked reasonably well, I did think that the movie did fall into the trap of the ‘kiss at the wrong time’. I did think that a lot of the characters had good parts to play and most of them came across as integral to the story.

I felt this movie was really entertaining and able to keep my attention focused throughout. I recognised quite a few of the actors in this and felt they played well off each other. This is probably a film I would watch again.

Marvel’s Mightiest Heroes: The Uncanny X-Men

Marvel's Mightiest Heroes The Uncanny X-Men

(This review may contain spoilers).

It was interesting to see another of Marvel’s teams of superheroes in this book. I was a little disappointed not to have the opportunity to see one of the first comics of the X-Men, but I felt that the storylines shown here did a good job of showcasing the team and their abilities.

I felt it was good to have some background to the team in the first comic, even if it was kind of an exposition. I felt a lot of sympathy for Cyclops’ character in the first comic, though it was disappointing to see that he felt the need to leave the X-Men.

Although I would have liked to see more of the other team members, it was interesting to see the ones I was able to. I liked the opportunity to see Kitty Pryde as both a child and as an adult. It was good to see her future self return to the past… particularly to see the contrast between her fear of Nightcrawler as a youngster and her happiness upon seeing him as an adult.

I thought it was interesting to see the relationships that Kitty had with the other X-Men as an adult and, in particular, to see her relationship with Colossus. I thought it was good that they talked about losing their love if history did end up being changed. It was also good to see that Storm cared so much about Kitty and I would have liked to see more of that.

Since I originally saw him in the cartoon of the X-Men, Nightcrawler has been among one of my favourites… and these comics cemented that for me. Despite his outward appearance, he came across as noble and kind and I would have liked to see more of his interactions with Mystique.

As with most of the other comic books, I felt that the second comic was much darker and grittier than the first set. It was interesting to see the X-Men working with Magneto and it was incredibly sad to read the very first scene in the comic.

I thought it was good to see more of Professor Xavier in the second comic, too. I was able to empathise with him and I felt he came across as stronger than he really appeared.

In the future, I’d like to read more of the Uncanny X-Men… and have the opportunity to meet others who have been part of the team.

PROTOSTAR Button

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I’d give this book, ideally, 3.5 stars. I thought that the plot idea of this was really intriguing… and the cover was definitely one that caught and held my attention.

I really liked the concept of this book and it was pretty cool to see William’s confusion about things that were different in his experience on Earth. I would have liked to see a bit more of what was different for him… and also more about his abilities. I was a bit confused about what exactly he could do.

For quite a bit of the book, I didn’t really like Sydney. I felt she was quite rude and I didn’t exactly understand how William developed feelings for her. I did feel that the romance moved too fast. I would have liked to see more time developing the relationship between William and Sydney.

One of my favourite parts of this book was probably the AI in William’s ship. Some of what he/it came out with made me smile and it was really good to see the interactions between it and William.

It was interesting to see glimpses of life back on William’s home planet, but I noticed that the villains came across as evil… with no indication that they thought they were doing the right thing, which I felt was really quite disappointing.

I did think that Sydney missed the opportunity to find out more about herself and I would have liked to learn more about exactly what she could do. The hints of mythology were interesting, but I was disappointed not to see those further explored.

This book was quite well-written, with only a few mistakes that I noticed. I don’t think I’ll be reading the sequel, though – Sydney’s just a little too cliched for my tastes. I couldn’t get behind her as a heroine.

The Child's Past Life

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

This book took me a little while to read, since I was reading it to someone… and reading out loud always takes longer than if I’m reading it in my head.

I found a lot of this book to be quite complicated. There was an awful lot happening and a lot of characters. There were times when I got a bit confused with who was who, especially with the characters who weren’t mentioned as much.

As the book went on, I found it easier to like Shen Ming as a character. Even though he became desperate towards the end of part one, I could understand the evolution of his character. And it was interesting to see glimpses of his past and personality through other characters during the course of the book.

It was interesting to see the Chinese culture and how the characters’ different beliefs affected the situations they were in. I did find Si Wang to be a really creepy boy at times. There were other times I couldn’t help feeling a bit sorry for him, but for a lot of the time, I did find that he was just a really creepy child.

It was interesting to see how things connected together through the course of the book. While I was reading it, I had no idea how events were connected in the way they were by the end of the book. I also found it interesting to read about the relationships that Si Wang formed with the other characters… even though I kept getting the impression that he didn’t really care about any of them.

I didn’t like Gu Quisha as a character at all. The way she interacted with Si Wang just seemed really inappropriate. I did find Si Wang’s mother an interesting character… even though she didn’t come across as a very nice woman for portions of the book.

I felt that this book was quite a good mix of different genres. There were parts of this book that were disturbing and other parts that were completely unexpected. The ending was kind of satisfactory… but I was a bit confused by one of the things that occurred then.

I would probably read other books by this author in the future. This was entertaining and deeply engaging and it was good to see how all of the characters were connected to each other.
