I’ve had it in mind to watch this series for a while, since learning about it. Having discovered it on NetFlix… I was immediately interested in sitting down and watching.
There’s a lot about this series that’s cliched. A family moves into a new house and discovers it has a bloody history that’s coming to life… or whatever. However, unlike many horror movies, there was enough detail in this series that enabled me to get to know many of the characters… including the ghosts in the house.
While some of the ghosts were clearly bad all the way through, there were some I couldn’t help feeling sorry for. I liked Moira’s character, even though I wouldn’t necessarily class her as one of the good ghosts. The changes in her appearance and personality were interesting… though I was very confused about why some of the ghosts had aged and others hadn’t.
I didn’t like Constance. Although she was an intriguing character, her moments where she seemed to have more depth were few and far between. And I felt especially sorry for Addy. I wanted to protect her.
There were some especially creepy moments in this series. The rubber man was particularly scary, despite what the costume started out as. After all, the mystery is always more terrifying.
I had a lot of sympathy for the ghosts of the two nurses. I would have liked the opportunity to see more of them in the house. And I would have liked to see more of certain other ghosts, too.
There was a good atmosphere to this series. I wasn’t sure I liked Violet, even though I could empathise with her. And Ben was at a low point in my estimation for a lot of the series. Vivien was easy to care about, even when she was being hormonal later on.
I recognised quite a few of the actors in this series and it was interesting to see them in the different roles. Chad and Patrick were two characters I would have liked to see have some form of resolution.
Some of the romance was a bit hard to get behind. I think the series would have worked well with less of an emphasis on that, though Hayden was more obsessive… then again, Ben really didn’t help himself.
I do plan to watch the next series at some point soon. Since some of the actors are playing different roles, I’m looking forward to see how they handle that.
