(This review may contain spoilers).
I haven’t read the book this film is based on, so this review is only based on the film itself.
There were some fairly creepy moments in this film, which worked quite well, since it was a thriller. I did struggle somewhat to relate to the two main characters, though, even if I’ve seen them both in other things before and know them to be good actors.
I liked the mystery throughout this film and there were some really nice camera angles and use of lighting and special effects. One of the most effective scenes was one shown in the preview, where there’s a body slowly decaying in a river.
I couldn’t really understand some of the motivations in this film, or the reasons behind the characters doing certain things. There was also one particular actress who I couldn’t separate from her role in the television series Happy Endings… the good thing about the main characters was that I wasn’t watching it and thinking of other characters the actors had played.
I wasn’t too keen on the police in this film. They did seem to come across as quite incompetent a lot of the way through. It was interesting to see Neil Patrick Harris in a more serious role and although he still looked like Barney from How I Met Your Mother, he didn’t have the same personality.
I don’t think I’d watch this film again. It was quite tense throughout, but the ending did let it down quite a bit, in my opinion. I’m guessing it’s the same ending as the book, but I still didn’t really like it.
