So, when I first saw this film advertised, I was grabbed by the plot… but also by the actor Luke Evans. I’ve seen him in several things and I really like him as an actor, so I knew he’d be good in this film.
The story of Dracula isn’t a unique one in and of itself, but I did think that this film was a really unique take on it. I know bits and pieces of the legend of Vlad the Impaler, especially considering a book I read recently that was an account of the historical figure Dracula was more than likely based on.
I felt this film did a good job of showing Vlad as a more sympathetic character. I liked his relationship with his wife and son. It was real and believable.
The minor characters in the film were interesting as well, though I did get confused with a few of them. (I was audio describing the film for my friend, so there were some scenes that were a bit more difficult to describe).
I felt there were some really cool special effects in the film, particularly the one where, instead of turning into one bat, Vlad shifts into a whole swarm of them. There were a lot of really intense moments in this and the fighting scenes were pretty cool. Despite the fact there was a lot of fighting and violence, there wasn’t as much blood as I’d expected.
I think this film is definitely one I’d see again. It was an interesting, unique take on the vampire genre and it was good to see something actually keep to the normal weaknesses of vampires. I definitely intend to buy this film on DVD when it comes out.
